Farronato","doi":"10.1016/j.mor.2011.02.001","DOIUrl":"10.1016/j.mor.2011.02.001","url":null,"abstract":"<div><h3>Objectives</h3><p>The aim of this work is to present the results of a study of orthodontic treatment with resin appliances in a group of 120 patients.</p></div><div><h3>Materials and methods</h3><p>Patch testing was performed before and immediately after completion of the orthodontic treatment to evaluate patient sensitivity to orthodontic resins.</p></div><div><h3>Results</h3><p>We found a statistically significant correlation between pre-treatment and post-treatment patch test positivity.</p></div><div><h3>Conclusions</h3><p>Allergic reactions are becoming an increasing concern for practitioners in health-related fields. Cozza","doi":"10.1016/j.mor.2011.06.001","DOIUrl":"10.1016/j.mor.2011.06.001","url":null,"abstract":"<div><h3>Objectives</h3><p>Functional treatment of Class II malocclusion has been advocated to control and modify the direction of growth of the maxillary teeth and to reduce the need for treatment involving the permanent teeth.</p></div><div><h3>Materials and methods</h3><p>Many studies demonstrate the effectiveness of functional appliances in the treatment of Class II malocclusion caused by mandibular retrognathism in growing patients. A wide range of functional/orthopedic appliances are available for the correction of this problem. The aim of all these appliances is to stimulate mandibular growth by forward posturing of the mandible.</p></div><div><h3>Results</h3><p>A systematic review of the literature reveals substantial variability in the reported outcomes of functional jaw orthopedics in Class II malocclusion. These differences depend mainly on the type of appliance used and the timing of intervention. Chimenti","doi":"10.1016/j.mor.2011.06.003","DOIUrl":"10.1016/j.mor.2011.06.003","url":null,"abstract":"<div><h3>Objectives</h3><p>The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of functional orthopedic therapy in growing patients whose facial profiles can be esthetically improved by moving the mandible forward.</p></div><div><h3>Materials and methods</h3><p>We conducted a controlled longitudinal cohort study of children with receding chins, normodivergent cephalometric profiles, and class II molar relations with an overjet of >5<!--> <!-->mm. Ten of the patients (five boys with a mean age of 11.5 years [SD±1.5] and five females with a mean age of 10.5 years [SD±1.5]) were treated with bite jumping and ten served as age- and sex-matched controls. Results were evaluated in terms of esthetic parameters and changes in 11 cephalometric angle measurements. Ciavarella","doi":"10.1016/j.mor.2011.03.004","DOIUrl":"10.1016/j.mor.2011.03.004","url":null,"abstract":"<div><h3>Objectives</h3><p>In the present study, the authors investigated the possible etiological role of the masticatory muscles in the development of Angle class II malocclusion in hypodivergent and hyperdivergent patients.</p></div><div><h3>Materials and methods</h3><p>Ten patients with Angle class II malocclusion were examined, and each underwent surface electromyography, T-Scanning, and kinesiography.</p></div><div><h3>Results</h3><p>Compared with the hyperdivergent patients, those who were hypodivergent exhibited increased activation of all the muscles studied, especially the anterior temporalis and masseter, which presented a more anterior occlusal barycenter and higher-velocity opening and closing.</p></div><div><h3>Conclusion</h3><p>Structural and/or positional changes in the mandibles can be related to dysfunctional muscle activity. Cravino","doi":"10.1016/j.mor.2010.09.003","DOIUrl":"10.1016/j.mor.2010.09.003","url":null,"abstract":"<div><h3>Objectives</h3><p>A search of PubMed was performed to evaluate the hypothesis that correct occlusion or the use of a splint can improve an athlete's performance.</p></div><div><h3>Materials and methods</h3><p>A search of PubMed based on the key words <em>dental occlusion</em> and <em>sport</em> and considering works published through February 2010 yielded 72 articles. For this review, we selected 12 of these whose main topic was athletes.</p></div><div><h3>Results</h3><p>For this review we considered two case-control studies, two reviews, seven pilot studies, and one article regarding the use of a mouthpiece in scuba divers.</p></div><div><h3>Conclusions</h3><p>It is clear that the muscles of the cranio cervico-mandibular district are involved in sports activities. It is still not clear whether insertion of a splint in the oral cavity can or cannot improve an athlete's performances: data on this issue are discordant.
