Caprioglio","doi":"10.1016/j.mor.2010.11.001","DOIUrl":"10.1016/j.mor.2010.11.001","url":null,"abstract":"<div><h3>Objectives</h3><p>The aim of this review is to provide an overview of the clinical effects of the surgically assisted rapid palatal expansion, with emphasis on the issues that are still unresolved and on the areas in which general consensus has been reached.</p></div><div><h3>Materials and methods</h3><p>Research was carried out to define the field of interest of dentists specialized in the field of orthodontics. Eighty-seven orthodontists were then asked to specify the main questions they had about this procedure, and the ten most frequently cited questions are included in this report. To answer these questions, the authors reviewed the available literature in the PubMed<sup>©</sup> database.</p></div><div><h3>Results</h3><p>Several aspects of surgically assisted expansions have been analyzed, including the effects of the procedure, the types of device and surgical techniques used, and measures adopted in the management of cases.</p></div><div><h3>Conclusions</h3><p>The literature appears discordant on several aspects of the treatment. Cozza","doi":"10.1016/j.mor.2011.03.002","DOIUrl":"10.1016/j.mor.2011.03.002","url":null,"abstract":"<div><h3>Objectives</h3><p>To evaluate the effects of airway obstruction on craniofacial morphology with emphasis on the oral and nasal cavities and the middle ear.</p></div><div><h3>Materials and methods</h3><p>Obstructed breathing can alter the anatomy of the upper maxilla and the middle third of the face, producing functional and morphological changes in structures close to the oral cavity, such as the nose and ear.</p></div><div><h3>Results</h3><p>Mouth-breathing children present underdevelopment of the maxilla, progressive atrophy of the nasal cavity, and Eustachian tube dysfunction that can lead to otitis media and conductive hearing loss. Orthopedic correction of the altered dental and skeletal morphology with rapid upper maxillary expansion can also solve problems involving the nose and ear.</p></div><div><h3>Conclusions</h3><p>Mouth breathing alters the anatomy of the nasal cavity and maxilla and the function of the middle ear. Rapid maxillary expansion increases the transverse dimensions of the maxilla, enlarges the nasal cavity, and improves Eustachian tube function.
