Furthermore, their duties are associated with particular stress on the craniocervical-mandibular system. The purpose of this report is to analyze the case of an Air Force pilot who is receiving gnathological postural treatment to achieve an improved occlusal balance.</p></div><div><h3>Materials and methods</h3><p>The patient was selected from the large population of Air Force pilots being treated at the “A. Mosso” Legal Medicine Institute in Milan. Veltri","doi":"10.1016/j.mor.2011.06.002","DOIUrl":"10.1016/j.mor.2011.06.002","url":null,"abstract":"<div><h3>Objectives</h3><p>The purpose of this study was to evaluate the possibilities and limitations of orthodontic camouflage treatment for mandibular asymmetry.</p></div><div><h3>Materials and methods</h3><p>The patient was a 26-old woman with right mandibular asymmetry who refused surgical orthodontic treatment, which is a gold standard for treatment of her condition. The decision was therefore made to use an orthodontic camouflage approach to improve/correct only the alveolo-dental positions of the two arches. The patient was treated with a palate expander attached to teeth (1.6-1.4-2.6-2.4) and banding of both arches with a standard edgewise technique. Refinement was achieved with interarch elastics.</p></div><div><h3>Results</h3><p>After 24 months of orthodontic treatment, the patient presented good compensation but the midline deviation remained.</p></div><div><h3>Conclusions</h3><p>Orthodontic surgery is the gold standard for correcting mandibular asymmetry. Cozza","doi":"10.1016/j.mor.2011.03.003","DOIUrl":"10.1016/j.mor.2011.03.003","url":null,"abstract":"<div><h3>Objectives</h3><p>The paper calls attention to the phenomenon of supernumerary teeth, one of the most common anomalies involving the number of teeth, and examines its association with delayed eruption of the permanent incisors.</p></div><div><h3>Materials and methods</h3><p>The literature on supernumerary teeth was analyzed to identify hypotheses on the cause of the phenomenon, classification of supernumerary teeth, and complications that can occur. In most cases, a supernumerary tooth in the anterior maxilla is responsible for altering the eruption of the permanent incisors, which may even become impacted. This article reviews diagnostic tools and options for the management of supernumerary teeth.</p></div><div><h3>Results and Conclusions</h3><p>Early diagnosis and management with conservative surgery and appropriate orthodontic treatment can minimize the potential complications caused by supernumerary teeth and successfully reposition the permanent incisors. Piacentini","doi":"10.1016/j.mor.2010.09.005","DOIUrl":"10.1016/j.mor.2010.09.005","url":null,"abstract":"<div><h3>Objectives</h3><p>To assess the effect of blood contamination on the bonding and bond-failure site of 3 different types of self-ligating bracket.</p></div><div><h3>Materials and methods</h3><p>Two hundred forty bovine permanent mandibular incisors were randomly divided into 12 groups, each containing 20 specimens. Three different self-ligating brackets (Smart Clip - 3M Unitek, Monrovia, California, USA; Damon - Ormco, Glendora, California, USA; and Quick - Forestadent, Pforzheim, Germania) were bonded to the teeth with Orthosolo primer (Ormco, Glendora, California, USA) and Trasbond XT composite (3M Unitek, Monrovia, California, USA). Bonding was tested under different surface enamel conditions: dry, contaminated with blood before priming, contaminated with blood after priming, and contaminated with blood before and after priming. After bonding, all samples were stored in distilled water at room temperature for 24hours. Shear bond strength was then evaluated with a universal testing machine (Mod. 4301, Instron Corp., Canton, Massachussets, USA). After bond failure, the bracket bases and the enamel surfaces were examined under an optical microscope (Stereomicroscope SR, Zeiss, Oberkochen, Germany) at 10 x magnification, and the amount of adhesive left on the enamel surface was rated with the adhesive remnant index (ARI). All the data were statistically analyzed (Chi-square test; level of significance p<0.05).</p></div><div><h3>Results and conclusions</h3><p>ARIs of 2 were more frequent among samples bonded to dry enamel, whereas samples bonded to blood-contaminated enamel (before, after, or before and after priming) exhibited a higher frequency of ARI 0.
