The variations in these enzymes shown in rats of different ages and at different times of the day were interpreted as expressions of different metabolic conditions of the liver because when changes in the membrane permeability occur or liver cells die changes in plasma enzyme activity can be expected to follow the same direction. Lowered GOT and GPT levels in the old rats and the same glycogen content of the liver as that of the young rats indicated a decreased glucose metabolism in the old animals. The LDH activity did not follow any time pattern. Daily variations in GPT and liver glycogen (the maximum of both parameters was between 4.00 and 8.00) were shown more distinctly in the old rats, whereas the daily variations in the plasma total protein and albumin showed minima between 8.00 and 12.00 in the young animals. The authors concluded that daily rhythms, essential for the function of the organism as a whole, are accentuated with ageing. On the other hand, rhythms of minor importance are desynchronized.</p>","PeriodicalId":75459,"journal":{"name":"Aktuelle Gerontologie","volume":"12 5","pages":"187-91"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1982-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"17195841","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

While the first group presents in every respect the positive picture of aging, the second constitutes the real problem group. A sample of 4500 persons aged more than 59 years were interviewed in 1978. The theoretical approach was to identify the elements of successful aging under the conditions of swiss society, which are: the quality and degrees of independence and self determination of personality, continuity of the manner of living and adequate handling of the changing conditions of life in the third age including physical, mental, communicational and economic mutations. To reach this goal the survey measured the socio-economic conditions of the investigated population, their psycho-physical ability, how old people compensate deficits: the conditions essential for life, integration in leisure, private contacts, public opinions and political participation. The results show that a great majority is satisfied with the conditions of dwelling, occupation and economic conditions. But in all dimensions of life we also found minorities oppressed, threatened or deprived. Psycho-physical fitness proved to be in good state for a great majority and only a few percent were in a physical or mental condition which did not grant them independence and self-determination. This diagnosis was assisted by the results of two newly developed tests for meaning ability.</p>","PeriodicalId":75459,"journal":{"name":"Aktuelle Gerontologie","volume":"12 5","pages":"180-3"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1982-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"17195080","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

They are observed in about 25% of persons older than 65 years, independent of their initial blood pressure. The stroke volume equivalents obtained by means of impedance cardiography enable the physician to differentiate between the behaviour during the early regulation phase and that during the phase of late regulation. The following conclusions can be drawn from the findings in 38 young volunteers (average age: 22 years) and 39 elderly volunteers (average age: 76 years): In elderly volunteers with normal late regulation, the stroke volume drops immediately by 16.1 ml and attains a maximum drop by 19.5 ml after ten minutes. Elderly volunteers with pathologic late regulation show a distinctly higher decrease in stroke volume by 38 to 42 ml below the initial level. With younger volunteers with normal late regulation, the stroke volume drops after positional change by 43 ml and attains an average minimum value of 55 ml after ten minutes. With the younger volunteers with pathologic late regulation, there is an average drop by 52.7 to max. 72.7 ml below the initial level. Spontaneous activity was assessed by an electronic instrument (Animex Activity Meter), which also enabled us to distinguish between total and large movements. During senescence, the spontaneous activity of the control animals decreased slightly by approximately 20% after the age of 18 months. In addition to the quantitative change, a progressive flattening of the activity rhythm was observed. The animals kept under crowded conditions did not reveal any age-related decrease in spontaneous activity. At an advanced age, this resulted in significantly higher activity values in the crowded group as compared with the controls. The differences appeared even earlier and seemed to be more pronounced in the number of large movements. However, the progressive disappearance of the endogenous rhythm was apparent in both the crowded and the control group. It can be concluded that at least two types of change in the central nervous system may be responsible for the aging-changes in spontaneous activity: one which disintegrates the \"time structure\" of the organism, and a second one which affects motivational centers. Crowded conditions seem to improve the latter, whereas they have no effect on the aging of the \"biological clock\".</p>","PeriodicalId":75459,"journal":{"name":"Aktuelle Gerontologie","volume":"12 4","pages":"128-33"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1982-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"17193237","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
