Besides polymyalgia rheumatica or cranial arteritis the illness may afflict various organs including eye, ear, skin, heart, cerebrum and liver or may mimic a chronic infectious or malignant disease. Diagnosis should be considered in any such cases, especially when laboratory data suggest a chronic infectious disease due to high sedimentation rate, anemia with low serum iron and normal total iron binding capacity and an increase in alpha 2-globulin. Diagnosis can be proven by temporal-artery biopsy or by prompt relief of all symptoms following cortisone treatment.
","PeriodicalId":75459,"journal":{"name":"Aktuelle Gerontologie","volume":"13 1","pages":"19-21"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1983-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"17198513","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Particularly in old age it is mistaken for vertebral or vascular diseases. If conservative treatment is ineffective or the compression of the nerve is enlarging fast, surgical treatment will be indicated. In this case you can get freedom of pain in 66,6% in applying the right method of operation (5 different methods in micro-neurosurgery are available). Since May 1981 we use laser-surgery with great success. We checked (in average 13 months after the operation) 111 of 133 patients (33 male, 100 female, age of 16-84 most of them in the 6. decade) and got those results: 58,7% very good, 14,8% good, 15,7% satisfying and 5,8% unchanged.
","PeriodicalId":75459,"journal":{"name":"Aktuelle Gerontologie","volume":"13 1","pages":"1-4"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1983-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"17198510","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Part of these animals received plus dehydroepiandrosterone (DEA) treatment. Corticoid deficiency was substituted by cortisone. In addition 22 rats were administered only cortisone, 11 animals cortisone and DEA, and 10 rats only DEA for 36 days. On day 37 the different parameters of treated rats were compared to findings in 31 control animals. It has been found that body weight, calcitonin hypocalcaemia, serum alkaline phosphatase, as well as bone ash weight pro unit body weight was significantly lower in AG treated rats as compared to controls and rats receiving DEA in addition to AG. Values of latter group did not differ from controls. It has also been established that neither cortisone substitution nor isolated DEA treatment did involve significant differences in the studied parameters of bone metabolism as compared to controls. The findings support the opinion that sex hormone deficiency, directly or indirectly results osteoporosis. The experimental model seems to be suitable for the study of androgen deficient osteopenia.
","PeriodicalId":75459,"journal":{"name":"Aktuelle Gerontologie","volume":"13 1","pages":"15-8"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1983-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"17198512","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

{"title":"Age dependence of mechanical properties of rat tail tendons (hysteresis experiments).","authors":"H G Vogel","doi":"","DOIUrl":"","url":null,"abstract":"

Mechanical parameters of tail tendons have been studied depending on maturation and age using male Sprague Dawley rats at an age of 1, 2, 4, 12 and 24 months. Ultimate values, such as ultimate strain, ultimate load, tensile strength, and ultimate modulus of elasticity, were the highest at an age of 12 months. In old rats these values were slightly lower. Using tail tendons with the same diameter from the same rats hysteresis experiments have been performed at extension degrees of 2, 4, 6 and 8% respectively. Stress at the end of the loading phase was the highest at 4 months for 2 and 4% extension and at 12 months for 6 and 8% extension. Between 12 and 24 months no significant difference was found. Modulus of elasticity at the end of the loading phase showed a sharp increase due to maturation reaching the maximum at 4 months at 2 and 4% extension and at 12 month at 6 and 8% extension. Thereafter a decrease was noted as it was for ultimate modulus of elasticity. Energy input during the loading phase increased during maturation. This increase was less pronounced for energy dissipation indicated by the unloading phase. As a consequence, the ratio between energy dissipation and energy input decreases significantly during maturation, however, during aging merely a slight decrease is noted. Residual extension at the end of the unloading phase is considerably decreased during maturation. Between 12 and 24 months only minor changes of this parameter were noted. In conclusion the parameters describing the hysteresis phenomenon in rat tail tendons are considerably influenced by maturation but only to a minor degree by aging. In this phenomenon indicating plasticity no reversal in the direction of age dependent changes has been observed. The comparison of the results of the hysteresis experiments in rat tail tendons with similar experiments performed previously in rat skin shows similarities as well as significant differences between both tissues.
","PeriodicalId":75459,"journal":{"name":"Aktuelle Gerontologie","volume":"13 1","pages":"22-7"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1983-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"17198514","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

{"title":"Changes in cell cultures of bovine corneal endothelium cells as related to donor age and number of passages in vitro.","authors":"K Sames, J Lindner","doi":"","DOIUrl":"","url":null,"abstract":"

Aging changes of the acidic glycosaminoglycans (aGAG) were investigated in bovine corneal endothelium cells grown in vitro, using histochemical methods and the determination of hexosamine and uronic acid. The time interval between trypsination and confluency of the monolayer and the cell counts at different time intervals of the same passage number served as parameters for the proliferation capacity of the cultures. A cell line, derived from the eye of a 1,5 year old cattle showed a low proliferation capacity in the first 9 passages, which increased until the 15th passage, to decrease thereafter until the 29th passage. In cells from eyes aged 11 and 12 years respectively the initial proliferation capacity was very low to reach the same values as in cultures of the young eye at the 10th passage but remained constant thereafter. Chromosome counts showed an increased number of hyperploids in late passages of cells from the aging eye with counts around 4n-8n increased to 17% as compared to 5% in the cells derived from the young eye. The cell densities were increased in cultures of high passage numbers. Histochemically the aGAG were shown in the cell nucleus, and the cytoplasm as well as in the intercellular space. In the nuclei of cells from aging eyes and in late passage cells of the young eye they showed an increased resistance against resting hyaluronidase. The hexosamine and uronic acid values were high in early passages of cultures from the young eye and decreased in late passages of the young eye as well as in early passages of cells from the aging eyes. The changes in the aGAG as well as the changes in the cell proliferation are similar comparing early passage cells of aging eyes to late passage cells of the young eyes. But the aGAG changes are more pronounced in cells of eyes aged in vivo. In the eye the proliferation of the corneal endothelium cells is inhibited. As such these cells provide a useful model to comparing in vivo-aging changes of resting cells to changes of the same cells proliferating in vitro.
","PeriodicalId":75459,"journal":{"name":"Aktuelle Gerontologie","volume":"12 6","pages":"206-12"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1982-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"17197436","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

[Biological and gerontological significance of oxygen]. [氧气的生物学和老年学意义]。

{"title":"[Biological and gerontological significance of oxygen].","authors":"H Nohl","doi":"","DOIUrl":"","url":null,"abstract":"

The phylogenetic \"discovery\" of oxygen as the terminal electron acceptor of respiration may be regarded as a prerequisite of the development to higher forms of life. The rationale for this assumption is based on the considerable higher energy gain associated with aerobic respiration which allowed to go new pathways in metabolism. However, oxygen constitutes both a benefit and a threat to living things because aerobic respiration involves the formation of dangerously reactive intermediates. These intermediates have been recognized to play a key role in many pathogenetic events and postulated to contribute to the biological process of aging. Organisms which have availed themselves of the benefit of aerobic respiration, developed a series of synergistic defenses against its danger. Perturbation of oxygen homeostasis occurs when formation of toxic oxygen intermediates exceeds the capacity of protective mechanisms. A sudden event which leads to such an imbalance may cause the manifestation of different types of maladies. Our own investigations on rat-heart mitochondria have indicated that aging is associated with a progressive loss in the capacity to balance the formation of toxic oxygen metabolites. Despite a clear induction, activities of protecting enzymes seem to be \"swamped\" by an age-dependent raise of steady state levels of dangerous oxygen intermediates. The resulting structural damage and functional impairment of mitochondria are discussed as the primary cause of cellular aging.
","PeriodicalId":75459,"journal":{"name":"Aktuelle Gerontologie","volume":"12 6","pages":"195-9"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1982-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"17197434","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

[Pick's disease. A special type of pathological aging of the brain]. (选择的疾病。一种特殊类型的大脑病理性老化]。

{"title":"[Pick's disease. A special type of pathological aging of the brain].","authors":"F Seitelberger","doi":"","DOIUrl":"","url":null,"abstract":"

Pick's disease (circumscribed lobar atrophy of the brain) in its typical form, is a so-called presenile type of dementia, i.e. a cerebral disease which begins in the sixth decade of life, and leads to a progressive loss of intellectual capacity traits. Neuropathologically, Pick's disease is characterised by severe focal atrophy of the cerebral cortex, mainly of basal parts of the temporal and frontal lobe. In the long run, all the nerve cells of the affected areas and their processes are destroyed. This also involves the subcortical white matter (loss of nerve fibres and cicatrisation). Concomitant atrophies of other parts of the brain are frequent. The article reports on the results of the clinico-neuropathological examination of 30 cases of Pick's disease basing on the author's own observations. Special emphasis is placed on \"neuronal atrophising dystrophy\" of cortical systems as a characteristic change caused by Pick's disease; this phenomenon is interpreted as an endogenous disturbance of the neuronal structural metabolism. This process is, as a matter of principle, identical with the physiological \"atrophising dystrophy\" which represents part of cerebral aging. There are also pathogenetical parallels to orthological neuronal reactions to damaging of the axis cylinder processes. Pick's disease is characterised by the pathological extent and type of manifestation of \"neuronal atrophising dystrophy\". This pathological distortion of physiological processes is probably due to a specifically genetic and sometimes hereditary constellation. Finally, the article discusses the functional neuropathology or neuropsychology of Pick's disease. The importance of the basal temporofrontal cortex for the quality and preservation of human personality is emphasised; the changes of the high-class performances of the human brain, as caused by Pick's disease, are interpreted. Referring to the peculiarities of Pick's disease compared with normal cerebral aging, particular attention is drawn to the concept of \"disease\" and the definition of senile cerebral aging.
","PeriodicalId":75459,"journal":{"name":"Aktuelle Gerontologie","volume":"12 6","pages":"200-5"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1982-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"17197435","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
