This is a cross-sectional study, which included spirometrically defined COPD patients, out of exacerbation period and with motor and cognitive skills necessary to perform the spirometry and the 6MWT and reply to the ‘CAT’ questionnaire. We sorted groups according to the clinical impact proposed by ‘CAT’: mild, moderate, severe and very severe. We included 66 COPD patients, with FEV1 (% pred) averages of 53.1 ± 21.9, 51.4 ± 14.1, 50.6 ± 12.8 and 46.4 ± 13.0, which corresponded to the clinical impact of ‘CAT’, respectively (p > 0.05). The highest ‘CAT’ score, observed on mild, moderate and severe clinical impact did not determine the shortest walking distance in the 6MWT (p 30 (very severe clinical impact) was associated with shorter walking distance in the 6MWT (p < 0.05). We found no negative correlation between ‘CAT’ and 6MWT (p = 0.0707 and r = -0.2479). ‘CAT’ was not associated to 6MWT.","PeriodicalId":7185,"journal":{"name":"Acta Scientiarum. Was a descriptive, exploratory, retrospective and comparative study realized in Neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) of a university hospital in Brazil, with seven hundred six NB admitted in the NICU in the period of five years. The results showed high rate of childbirths of teenage mothers (27%). Among teenage mothers (193), 80% of their NB had low birth weight, and 84% were premature; and among adult mothers (513), 69% had low birth weight, and 77% were premature. During the study, 102 NB have died (mortality rate of 14.5%). The analysis of the relative risk (RR) of indicators – LBW (RR=1.75, CI95%=1.17-2.62, p < 0.006), prematurity (RR=1.60, CI95%=1.03-2.50, p < 0.03) – evidenced a higher probability of death for the NB from teenage mothers, with birth weight <2500 gramsor premature, than NB from adult mothers. In conclusion the outcome showed that the number of deaths during the neonatal period was not related to maternal age, but the prematurity and the low birth weight was.","PeriodicalId":7185,"journal":{"name":"Acta Scientiarum. Observational study with elderly from urban and rural areas in the interior of the State of Rio Grande do Sul, evaluated by the Fall Risk Score and further criteria for the evaluation and characterization of the last fall within 12 months. A total of 125 elderly, 89 urban and 36 rural was evaluated. There was a high prevalence of medication use (93.6%), impaired vision (35.2%) and previous falls (81.6%) in the total sample of individuals as well as the risk of falls (76.8%) without differences between the groups. The variables of statistical significance were impaired hearing (p = 0.009) and impairment of the lower limbs (p = 0.04). Both the elderly living in rural areas and in urban areas showed high risk for falls in the group studied, with no significant difference between them. Thus, it is worth highlighting the importance of making a health work for guidance on falls.","PeriodicalId":7185,"journal":{"name":"Acta Scientiarum. There are around 1 billion people worldwide (about 15% of the population) with some type of disability or incapacity. About 80% of these people live in developing nations. This study aimed to identify and describe the profile of the disabled population in the Metropolitan Area of Maringa (MAM), Parana, considering its socio-spatial structure, which was defined by the Metropolis Observatory, Maringa Center. The elaboration of the profile counted with data collected from the 2010 Census sample, provided by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics, and processed through the SAS software (2016). The study of the MAM in its general configuration reveals that its indicators are lower than national ones. The same indicators, when calculated considering its socio-spatial divisions, suggest a major imbalance in the prevalence of visual, hearing, motor or mental/intellectual disabilities. The research found the highest percentage of people with disabilities among the working class, working poor and farm workers. In contrast, the upper middle class showed the lowest indicators.","PeriodicalId":7185,"journal":{"name":"Acta Scientiarum. This compound is SOLD as a nutraceutical in Brazil, being widely consumed by the population due to its functional properties. According to its health benefits, this paper aimed to investigate the labeling of nutraceutical products sold in drugstores in the city of Cascavel, Parana state - Brazil and verify its compliance with current legislation. The research was carried out in drugstore networks located in Cascavel, Parana state, in 09 different establishments, from May to June 2016. Nutraceutical products containing omega-3 in their formulations were identified at the sites visited. Their images were captured and proceeded with the research analyzing these labels according to the Legislation in force for products of functional and or health claim. We analyzed 13 labels, only 38.46% (five labels) presented no irregularities. Therefore, it was concluded that the laws in Brazil are not being followed by the companies responsible for manufacturing these products and the lack of mandatory information on their labels can put the consumer´s health at risk, being that it must be guaranteed the consumption safety of adequate and quality products.","PeriodicalId":7185,"journal":{"name":"Acta Scientiarum. In the evaluation of resistance to different commercial use antibiotics, all strains were sensitive to the antibiotics ampicillin, chloramphenicol, doxycycline, and tetracycline. LA1 was considered moderately sensitive (MS) to erythromycin and LA3 was MS to clindamycin and erythromycin. LA3 was classified between MS to resistant to erythromycin. All three strains were resistant to gentamicin. When evaluating acid pH resistance, the three origins presented similar behavior, with a decrease in cell viability at pH 2, maintaining constant viability at pH 3 and 4. In the test of resistance to the gastrointestinal tract conditions and hydrophobicity, LA2 presented better results. The three strains showed production of inhibitory compounds against pathogenic bacteria and deconjugated tauroconjugated bile salts (TDCA). It was concluded that, depending on the origin, Lactobacillus acidophilus may present different behaviors that will determine its growth and, consequently, its action in vivo . Due to the practicality of access, economy, and the satisfactory results in the tests performed, LA2 can be considered the strain of choice among those studied.","PeriodicalId":7185,"journal":{"name":"Acta Scientiarum. However, cleaning of the cavity, handling and protection of the material affect the success. The goal of this study was to evaluate the attitudes and knowledge of dental surgeons (DS), who work in the public service, about the ART. The DS working at the 15 th Regional Health Care Center of the state of Parana were invited to answer a questionnaire. Data were analyzed through absolute and percentage distribution, and by Fisher’s Exact Test (p < 0.005). Out of 213 sent, 107 questionnaires were returned. More than half of DS considered insufficient their knowledge about ART. There was a significant association between the knowledge on the strategy and academic degrees (p < 0.05). Only 14.1% affirmed to perform cavity cleaning with polyacrylic acid and 26.1% stated they protect the surface of the material. Among the respondents, 54.2% never received training on ART and 86.9% showed interest in a training for this procedure. It can be concluded that the lack of technical and scientific knowledge of DS makes it difficult to use ART in the clinical routine, and training on this procedure is necessary for efficient use in the public service.","PeriodicalId":7185,"journal":{"name":"Acta Scientiarum.
