A stratified sample of 1,055 adult individuals surveyed. Associations were examined by log-binomial regression models and expressed as prevalence ratios (PRs). The prevalence of self-reported hypertension among women was 20.2% (95%CI: 17.5-23.1) and among men was 29.0% (95%CI: 22.9-35.5). The prevalence of self-reported diabetes among women was 6.9% (95%CI: 5.2-8.8) and among men was 12.2% (95% CI: 8.1-17.3). The prevalence of both conditions increases significantly with age. Crude and adjusted PRs indicate no association between socioeconomic status and the self-reported chronic conditions.","PeriodicalId":7185,"journal":{"name":"Acta Scientiarum. The sample comprised 659 subjects. the physical activity and leisure motivation scale, as well as the Fantastic Lifestyle questionnaire were used. Data analysis was carried out by using Kruskall-Wallis, Mann-Whitney, Spearman correlation and Path Analysis (p < 0.05). Considering all the subjects of the present research, the results showed that the highest motivation indexes were related to health/fitness issues, and the lowest ones with the social factor. It is worth mentioning that the students, when compared to the administrative staff and professors, are more motivated to practice physical activity for having fun and improving their physical appearance, in addition to making new friends. The health/fitness and appearance factors had a significant impact on the lifestyle of the professors, whereas fun/interest had a significant impact on the lifestyle of the students. It was concluded that intrinsic motivation is intervenient in the sense that students develop healthy habits. On the other hand, autonomous motivation shall influence the increase healthy behavior among the professors, whereas extrinsic motives may discourage a healthy lifestyle.","PeriodicalId":7185,"journal":{"name":"Acta Scientiarum. Three fitness centers in Florianopolis, Santa Catarina State, Brazil (fitness centers A, B, and C) participated in this study. The fitness centers have different physical characteristics and ventilation systems. Fitness centers A and B have split ventilation systems, while fitness center C has a central ventilation system. The air quality was assessed by determining the CO 2 concentration level, as measured by a non-dispersive infrared CO 2 concentration sensor. Data was analyzed with descriptive and inferential statistics. All three fitness centers recorded CO 2 concentrations significantly above (p = 0.00) the maximum level of 750 ppm recommended by the European standard. Fitness centers A (= 3752.13 ppm) and C (= 1360.89 ppm) also had CO 2 concentrations significantly above (p = 0.00) the maximum level of 1000 ppm recommended by the Brazilian and French guidelines. CO 2 concentrations in fitness centers were significantly above the maximum permitted levels. Besides suggesting inefficient ventilation in these fitness centers, high CO 2 concentrations can impair indoor air quality and increase risks to the health of practitioners.","PeriodicalId":7185,"journal":{"name":"Acta Scientiarum. This study aims to describe its clinical, diagnostic and therapeutic aspects in the elderly. This is an exploratory-descriptive cross-sectional study with a quantitative approach, developed in a Sanitary District in Natal/RN, from January 2010 to December 2015. Among the 94 participants, the majority were males (51.1%) aged between 60 and 69. The pulmonary form of the disease was predominant (86.2%) in the studied group and most of the cases were new (59.6%). The treatment was self-administered (52.1%) and completed within the appropriate period (57.4%). The tuberculin test was not undergone by the majority of the elderly (76.6%), neither was histopathology (86.2%), while chest X-ray was suggestive of tuberculosis (72.3%). It was observed that the elderly did not undergo the first bacilloscopy (59.5%) and, out of those who were subjected to the second, it was positive for most (54.2%). It is worth mentioning that the Human Immunodeficiency Virus serology was not carried out in 54.2% of the senior patients with tuberculosis. Older individuals make up a risk population group and should be given special attention from health professionals.","PeriodicalId":7185,"journal":{"name":"Acta Scientiarum. Paracoccidioidomycosis (PCM) is a systemic mycosis of great importance in Latin America, caused by the thermo-dimorphic fungus Paracoccidioides brasiliensis . The aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of n-3 PUFAs in lymphoproliferative activity in murine experimental PCM. Spleen lymphocytes from animals infected with an isolate of P. brasiliensis (Pb18) and fed with diets supplemented with flaxseed oil or a commercial diet for eight weeks, were obtained and cultured for evaluation of lymphoproliferative activity by MTT assay. In uninfected animals and those fed an enriched-flaxseed diet the evaluated lymphoproliferative activity was inhibited in the first week; however, this activity resumed at later stages. On the other hand, in animals infected and fed an enriched-flaxseed diet, the interaction between the stimulus given by the presence of the fungus and the action of n-3 PUFAs appeared to stimulate lymphocyte proliferation after the first week of infection. n-3 PUFAs are shown to influence lymphoproliferative activity of mice in experimental PCM.","PeriodicalId":7185,"journal":{"name":"Acta Scientiarum. The objective of this study was to analyze the correlation between type 2 Diabetes mellitus (DM2) and oxidative DNA damage in elderly residents of the municipality of Ivoti, State of Rio Grande do Sul. This study had an exploratory, descriptive, cross-sectional and quantitative approach based on the data bank of the institutional project of the Feevale University. There was a predominant population of married women, retired, with monthly income up to 2 minimum wages, with education until to the 4th grade of fundamental school and bilingual. Statistical difference was detected for fasting glycemia, HbA1c and 8-hydroxydioxy-2-guanosine (8-OHdG) between DM2 and control subjects, as well as a positive Spearmann correlation between HbA1c and 8-OHdG in patients with DM2. It was possible to identify through fasting glycemia and HbA1c that elderly people who had poor glycemic control also showed a significant increase in the production of reactive oxygen species and consequent DNA damage when compared to the elderly with good glycemic control.","PeriodicalId":7185,"journal":{"name":"Acta Scientiarum. The association between CMD and the explanatory variables (according to sex) were assessed using regression gross and adjusted Poisson regression analysis. The prevalence of CMD was more pronounced among women (22.7; 95% CI: 20.8 to 24.5%). The most reported symptom among men (38%) and women (50%) was feeling nervous, tense or worried. Eleven mothers of children undergoing conservative renal treatment participated. The data were analyzed with conventional content analysis. It was possible to construct two categories: Being supported by the formal social support network; Being supported by the informal social support network. The analysis showed that the main source of maternal support was related to the family. In addition, the mothers stressed the importance of the support of professionals, health services and non-governmental organization. It is concluded that Nursing can improve the targeting of care actions aimed at the family of the child in renal conservative treatment, expanding the social support network.","PeriodicalId":7185,"journal":{"name":"Acta Scientiarum.
