Data from medical records of patients with neoplastic and non-neoplastic SGL concerning to age, sex, ethnicity, anatomical location, microscopic diagnosis and treatment were collected. All SGL with diagnosis confirmed by microscopic examination were considered. Of the 3,127 biopsied lesions, 381 (12.1%) SGL were identified. Caucasian (71%) women (51%) aging from 11 to 20 years (33%) were more affected. 88.5% (n= 337) were non-neoplastic lesions, 7% (n= 27) benign neoplasms and 4.5% (n= 17) malignant neoplasms. Mucocele was the most prevalent lesion (n= 269%), followed by pleomorphic adenoma (n= 25%). Recognition and appropriate management of these lesions is essential, especially because malignant neoplastic lesions of the salivary glands can be very aggressive.","PeriodicalId":7185,"journal":{"name":"Acta Scientiarum. This study identified the occurrence of respiratory symptoms in older persons. Specifically, a descriptive, observational, and quantitative study was conducted using a sample of elderly people enrolled in the Hypertension and Diabetes sessions of the Family Health Strategy program in a Brazilian city. MRC-ATS-DLD78 questionnaires were used to analyze respiratory symptoms with a sample comprised of 50 volunteers (mean age = 69.96 years). The median time living in a dwelling within a polluted sample area was 30 years, with 82% reporting spending more time per day at home or in the neighborhood. The presence of coughing was reported by 18% persons, expectoration (17%), productive cough (14%), wheezing (34%), dyspnea (12%), and respiratory diseases (26%). Physiological changes in aging associated with the effects of pollution exposure leave elderly people more vulnerable to respiratory diseases because they are predisposed to diseases, such as decreased pulmonary elasticity, elevated lung compliance, reduced oxygen diffusion capacity, reduced expiratory flow, and premature closure of airways. The occurrence of respiratory symptoms in the elderly was 30% with one symptom, two (22%), three (10%), four (6%), and five (2%).","PeriodicalId":7185,"journal":{"name":"Acta Scientiarum. A spouted bed was used in the coating process of soft capsules containing palm oil and of hard capsules containing glutamine under standardised experimental conditions. The height and diameter of the palm oil and glutamine capsules were measured using a calliper. The following variables were analysed: Eudragit® S100 dispersion amount used in the capsule coating process, nozzle air pressure, nozzle air flow rate, spray rate and temperature of the spouted bed coating process. The Eudragit® S100 dispersion formulation, trademarked as Quickstart® by Evonik Industries, was used with modifications to prepare the enteric coating. The results showed that the adequate temperature for the spouted bed coating process was 50°C and that 0.2 mL of 6.5% Eudragit® S100 coating per cm2 capsule was resistant for 60 minutes at pH 6.8. The findings demonstrate the pharmaceutical application of Eudragit® S100 in the modification of the coating and the preparation of a delayed-release system of hard and soft capsules, thus enabling ileal release of active ingredients.","PeriodicalId":7185,"journal":{"name":"Acta Scientiarum. Health and education professionals are responsible for reporting suspected or confirmed cases of rights violation. This study aimed to investigate the prevalence and qualification of violation of children’s and adolescents’ rights in the State of Paraná between 2009 and 2014. A descriptive and observational quantitative study was carried out based on the records of the Child Protective Services in Paraná, accessed through the Information System for Childhood and Adolescence (SIPIA). A total of 129.123 violations of rights were found. Among those cases, the right to familiar and communitarian companionship stands out with the greatest number of violations, followed by the right to education, culture, sports and leisure. Mothers were found to be the main aggressors, followed by fathers, and sexual violence/abuse was the most prevalent type of violence. In conclusion, there was a significant amount of violation of children’s and adolescents’ rights in the State of Paraná during the period covered by this research, and it has increased over the years. Besides, we found out that there is a predisposition of gender and age group for each variable analyzed.","PeriodicalId":7185,"journal":{"name":"Acta Scientiarum. However, human motor functional behavior in immersion has not been sufficiently described. Such description is necessary to improve strategies used to perform movements in this environment and to possibly transfer them to land. Our goal is to offer a qualitative description of the aquatic motor behavior. We use action research to observe and describe motor behavior in water, which we systematized using the Aquatic Functional Assessment Scale, effects of water on the immersed body, its relationship with functional movements performed on land, and the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF). The results allowed the systematization of aquatic movements based on unique features of water compared to effects of activities and participation of functional movement, under a biopsychosocial view of ICF. Such systematization of aquatic behaviors enables professionals to increase their strategies and interventions in water, through that understand the complexity of this approach and improve physical and therapeutic interventions that will have an impact on health.","PeriodicalId":7185,"journal":{"name":"Acta Scientiarum. It is estimated that 70% of all cervical cancers worldwide are caused by HPV 16 and 18. Accordingly, the present study aimed to contribute to the identification of HPV subtypes circulating in a group of women of Manaus-Brazil. Cervical samples were collected from 49 women, following the eligibility criteria of the study, and DNA was then extracted from the samples, which were analyzed for the presence of the virus in the genetic material through the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) using generic primers (GP05/06). Finally, identification of the viral subtypes was performed using specific primers for the detection of the main subtypes already examined (16 and 18). Positive HPV DNA was detected in 100% of the samples included in the study. Human papillomavirus 16 was the most prevalent subtype in the majority of lesions, accounting for 29 (59.2%) of the positive cases, and HPV 18 was detected in four (8.2%) women. In these 4 cases there was co-infection, with the presence of both HPV 18 and HPV 16. Therefore, 40.8% (20 cases) in which HPV DNA was detected presented infection with other subtypes of HPV not included in the study. This data has clinical implications related to cervical cancer prevention, as the current prophylactic HPV vaccines are only effective against high-risk HPV 16 and 18 subtypes.","PeriodicalId":7185,"journal":{"name":"Acta Scientiarum. Cervical cancer screening is used in monitoring programs for early diagnosis and is considered safe and effective. This study aimed to analyze the conceptions of women on cervical cancer screening. A qualitative study was carried out with 30 women assisted in primary care, in Teresina, Piaui, Brazil. The Discourse of the Collective Subject was obtained from interviews carried out from August to October 2016. The speeches expressed the notions that women have about the significance of the screening test, the importance of undergoing the test, and prevention of cervical cancer. The conceptions of the interviewed women revealed that the test prevents diseases, including cervical cancer. However, the discourses left clear the lack of knowledge on HPV, its forms of prevention and cervical cancer. The analysis revealed that women have superficial or insufficient knowledge about the significance of the screening test and cervical cancer.","PeriodicalId":7185,"journal":{"name":"Acta Scientiarum.
