Although this call has been heeded to some extent, feminist thinking has not had nearly as much impact on professional communication research as it has had on research in other academic disciplines. For example, to date, there is no major publication devoted to researching issues in feminist theory and professional communication, and at major conferences feminist issues are not guaranteed a place on the agenda. This essay joins other scholars' calls for increasing the presence of feminist theory in professional communication research. In particular, I focus on feminist critiques of technology, making a case for the relevance of these critiques to professional communication research. After a brief overview of feminist approaches to technology, I suggest how the insights offered in these critiques might contribute to a feminist theory of technology design. I explore three general principles that would inform such a theory, consider how these principles both complement and challenge current thinking about technology design in the field of professional communication, and I argue that developing such a theory would be one way to increase the visibility of feminist perspectives in professional communication research.","PeriodicalId":70843,"journal":{"name":"文化与传播","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1999-09-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"81216288","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This allows for the dynamic and interactive analytical processing of both archival and current experimental data. The design and usability of a database-driven computational system that demonstrates the qualitative analysis of the dynamic balance of thermoregulatory processes is discussed. Incorporated within the software are educational modules that describe the effect of exercise on body temperature and heart rate, the effects of the environment on body temperature, methods of prevention of heat illness and first-aid procedures to be utilized in the event of a medical emergency. These modules are linked to clinical and experimental research databases. A user-friendly interface allows both non-technical users and scientists to retrieve information of interest easily. Simple examples are presented which demonstrate the utility of the interface. These include normal (indoor) body temperature, body temperature while hiking in a mountainous region and partial results from a study that characterized the skin temperature and heart rate response during bicycle ergometry. Temperature was measured by thermistors from 13 body segments. The data was collected and compiled into a relational database. Several algorithms, some of which utilize artificial intelligence objects incorporated within the database, analyze the data and yield results based on user preferences.","PeriodicalId":70843,"journal":{"name":"文化与传播","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1999-09-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"83075358","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Such concerns should be addressed early in the design phase, with special attention paid to specific design elements, such as colors and fonts, as well as the infrastructure of the Web site. This paper covers design conventions that will increase the accessibility of a Web site for visually impaired audiences. Why is this important? According to Bergman and Johnson (1995), accessibility is \"a category of usability\". Therefore, before a Web site can be tested for usability, its coding and design must first be accessible to the targeted users, i.e. accessibility must be in place before a conventional usability test can be conducted on representatives from the target audience-in this case, the visually impaired.","PeriodicalId":70843,"journal":{"name":"文化与传播","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1999-09-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"87518020","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Primitive cultures throughout the world use storytelling, visual designs, music and ceremonial rituals to define personal and social identities as well as to define position and navigation in the physical world. In primitive cultures, communication is defined by time-based structures, not fixed structures. These communicative structures are always in flux, always in the state of becoming. This paper illustrates the parallels between the temporal forms of communication in primitive cultures and the time-based structures in interactive electronic communication. The paper examines how the aesthetics of primitive designs and music can form the foundation for new computer interfaces that build perceptual bridges between cultures.","PeriodicalId":70843,"journal":{"name":"文化与传播","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1999-09-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"84968637","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
