However, public schools can provide a variety of writing assignments that are suitable for students in either introductory or advanced technical or professional writing courses, including manuals, instructions, grants and instructional materials. Because of the pressures of limited resources confronting public schools, both administrators and teachers welcome writing assistance from university students. While there are many opportunities for such an alliance at the local level, the Internet allows university students the opportunity to work with school students separated both in terms of miles and of culture. The use of the Internet allows the professional writing teacher to integrate relevant technology (e-mail, Internet chat, Web boards, Web pages) with the assigned writing tasks. Finally, the university students appear to appreciate assignments with a clearly-defined audience and purpose, and they seem to enjoy helping an over-burdened public school system.","PeriodicalId":70843,"journal":{"name":"文化与传播","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1999-09-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"82973625","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The idea stems from the emergence of the knowledge economy. If knowledge is a resource, then organizations ought to be able to manage it, just as they manage more traditional resources, like capital, supplies, real estate and personnel. One the challenges of with any hot buzzword is incorporating the underlying concept into business practice. If the buzzword gains sufficient exposure and its promoters show sufficient relevance to the corporate bottom-line, several internal organizations compete for ownership of the implementation: it happened with total quality management earlier in the decade, and it's happening with knowledge management now. The information systems and training communities have laid claim to part or all of this territory, and some technical communicators believe that they, too, should claim ownership. Should they? And if they do, what is it that they are claiming ownership of? In order to discuss these questions, and to draw appropriate conclusions, we need to better understand what knowledge management is and how it contrasts with technical communication, then we need to understand what's already happening in the area of knowledge management.","PeriodicalId":70843,"journal":{"name":"文化与传播","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1999-09-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"76464989","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Organizations are using the Web for marketing and business transactions. Because the Web has emerged as a strategic communication tool and a vast database of information, I discuss how organizations may gather competitive intelligence on the Web and what they must do to guard against divulging your organization's secrets. Further, the fact that the Web is accessible in a distributed setting makes it a viable choice for hosting a competitive intelligence system that employees can access from all over the world (assuming that they have an Internet connection). I discuss how organizations can develop such a system and deploy it on the Web, and I discuss communication professionals' role in the design and implementation of this system and their contributions to the competitive intelligence project. This paper should be valuable to communication professionals because it addresses the fundamental concern of how information is gathered, codified, distributed and used. The paper addresses a broad scope of issues related to competitive intelligence but focuses on the specific communication challenges of the Web.","PeriodicalId":70843,"journal":{"name":"文化与传播","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1999-09-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"74434836","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

As a way to sustain these partnerships, the AIHA instituted the Learning Resource Center (LRC) project, a program that provides information technology, in the form of hardware, software, and training, in order to educate CEE and NIS medical personnel about information technology and its usefulness in their medical practices. Everett Rogers's theory of the diffusion of innovations (E. Rogers, 1995) provides a useful tool for assessing the LRC project's success in supporting the partnerships by looking at the criteria of advantage, compatibility, complexity, trialability, and observability. In addition, Rogers's theory reveals the difficult intercultural issues raised by such a project, issues such as the differences in the levels of socio-economic infrastructure in CEE and NIS and the exportation of American values and culture that are inherent in the LRC project goals and in the information technology itself.","PeriodicalId":70843,"journal":{"name":"文化与传播","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1999-09-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"78645253","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This shape does not look promising for those seeking technical careers in domestic production. For engineering students, communication and language skills are now as important as advanced math and physics. Educators and employers agree that, apart from technical skills, an engineer's communication abilities determine career success. With domestic assembly and manufacturing on the endangered species list, students and faculty must strive to bridge the gaps in education to include internationally-oriented communication curricula.","PeriodicalId":70843,"journal":{"name":"文化与传播","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1999-09-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"74892771","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Arriving at technical communication by circuitous paths, we have each brought with us a large bag of assumptions, theories, practices, methods, prejudices, predilections, and attitudes. Almost none of us over thirty originally set technical communication as our career goal. Young professionals with degrees \"in field\" are just starting to enter the workplace in significant numbers. They represent a different mindset, having intentionally selected the career field and formally studied it. Though they have learned at the feet of \"self-taught\" professionals, they regard themselves and their careers quite differently. This Idea Market is designed to gather the stories of technical communicators: what field of study they started out in, how they came into technical communication what they know and how they know it. A questionnaire to be completed for this ethnographic survey of technical communication is presented.","PeriodicalId":70843,"journal":{"name":"文化与传播","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1999-09-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"84172511","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The ability to collaborate, communicate, and do business online offers the potential for a truly global village. Yet communication in cyberspace is by no means seamless.
