In regions where increased haemodynamic strain was anticipated, similar structural changes were observed in normal and hypercholesterolaemic rabbits. However, changes indicating cell injury were more wide-spread in cholesterolfed animals. This suggests that hypercholesterolaemia may increase cell susceptibility to injury. In the same regions, the development of intimal thickenings was observed in cholesterol-fed rabbits. The central parts of such thickenings had been reendothlialized, whereas a region with cell injury surrounded each lesion. In regions with low haemodynamic strain, a loss of fine-structural details was observed in hypercholesterolaemic rabbits. It is suggested that these changes may be related to the deteriorated functional properties of the intact endothelium in such rabbits. In view of these data it is suggested that the interrelationship between hypercholesterolaemia and atherosclerotic arterial disease may partly be due to a deleterious effect of hypercholesterolaemia on the functional and structural integrity of the arterial endothelium.","PeriodicalId":6953,"journal":{"name":"Acta pathologica et microbiologica Scandinavica. The findings lend additional support to the view that hypothalamic dysfunction is responsible for the signs and symptoms of generalized lipodystrophy.","PeriodicalId":6953,"journal":{"name":"Acta pathologica et microbiologica Scandinavica. The tumour was localized to the maxilla and metastases to lymph nodes, liver, and adrenal glands were in evidence. By microscopy of the primary tumour the latter was found to be characterized by a sporadic occurrence of pigment; in addition, metastases to the adrenal glands were found to comprise fontana-positive cells. If these features be related to the localization of the tumour and the age of the patient it seems natural to suggest that it is a matter of a melanotic progonoma although this type of tumour previously has been considered a benign growth.","PeriodicalId":6953,"journal":{"name":"Acta pathologica et microbiologica Scandinavica. No age dependency was found to exist for the glomerular parameters within the age category of 17 to 45 years. Above the age of forty-five a rise in mesangial area per cent of total area and mesangial nuclei per cent of total nuclei was found on increasing age, while a decline on increasing age was demonstrated for epithelial nuclei per cent of total nuclei. The mean value of mesangial nuclei per 1000 micron2 of mesangial area was found to be significantly higher in the older age category than in the younger. Arteriolosclerosis did not appear to influence the parameters. The study also attempted to describe the three variance components: interrenal, interfocal and interglomerular variation. Interfocal variation was the smallest part of the total variation, and interrenal plus interfocal variation was at most of the same size os interglomerular variation.","PeriodicalId":6953,"journal":{"name":"Acta pathologica et microbiologica Scandinavica. The tumour tissue which took and grew after inoculation was derived from malignant melanoma metastases of the skin (10 takes from 13 transplantations), and from primary malignant melanomas of the eye (4 takes from 6 transplantations). Not one of 13 attempts to transplant primary tumours of the skin was successful. In 7 instances serial transfers of transplanted tumour were successful, the degree of success ranging from 3 to 41 passages. Some passages were wilfully interrupted but two are continuing. The transplanted tumours grow locally. Neither lymph node metastases nor organ metastases have been observed. Histological appearances of the transplanted tumours, also after serial passages, were identical with those of the original human donor material. The human tumour/nude mouse system is contrasted and compared with other heterotransplantation models.","PeriodicalId":6953,"journal":{"name":"Acta pathologica et microbiologica Scandinavica.
