It was proved that this reaction was not related to bile canaliculi, contrary to bile canaliculi antibody demonstrated previously from patients with chronic active liver disease. By using fluorescein-conjugated anti-human IgG, the reaction with the periphery of the hepatocytes was produced to a more or less pronounced degree with almost all sera studied. The reaction seems not to be directed against contractile proteins on the liver cell membrane as only a minor part of these sera had also IgG smooth-muscle antibody, and anti actomyosin antibody obtained by affinity chromatografy did not react with the hepatocyte. When applying fluorescein-conjugated anti-human IgM the reaction with the periphery of the hepatocytes was observed in one fourth of the patients with acute hepatitis and only sera which contained also IgM smooth-muscle antibody.","PeriodicalId":6953,"journal":{"name":"Acta pathologica et microbiologica Scandinavica. A similar loss of renin can be reproduced in vitro when pregnant and post-partum and to a lesser degree non-pregnant uterine tissue slices are incubated at pH 7.4 at 37 degrees C. When a secondary incubation of these previously incubated preparations is performed at pH 4.8 an activation of renin is seen. There was not an inverse correlation between the amounts of renin lost during the primary incubation at pH 7.4 and the amounts of renin activated during the secondary incubation at pH 4.8. In similarly incubated preparations of kidney cortex, where only a small per cent of the initial renin content is lost during the primary incubation at pH 7.4, no activatable renin is seen.","PeriodicalId":6953,"journal":{"name":"Acta pathologica et microbiologica Scandinavica. In the early stages of differentiation (exclusively dividing cells) no changes were seen. In more advanced stages of differentiation the cell apices were altered and the nuclei normally placed near the cell base were located at all levels in the ameloblast layer. These changes were reversible and the cells developed into secretory ameloblasts of normal appearance and function. Ameloblasts in the most advanced stage of differentiation in which secretion had begun were severely damaged, and the mature secretory ameloblast population derived from these cells was decimated and produced enamel matrix with abnormal structure. It is concluded that differentiating ameloblasts are relatively invulnerable to vinblastine, whereas in secretory ameloblasts the organelles directly engaged in the secretory processes are particularly exposed to damage from the drug.","PeriodicalId":6953,"journal":{"name":"Acta pathologica et microbiologica Scandinavica. A premortem diagnosis was established on the basis of the history of chronic alcoholism, the picture of severe electrolyte disturbance and the development of the neurological syndrome. The postmortem findings verified the clinical diagnosis. A possible aetiological mechanism is postulated. The cause is believed to be a damage to the energy dependent electrolyte transport across the cell membrane, resulting in a cytotoxic oedema and death of the oligodendroglial cells of the brainstem which are particularly vulnerable.","PeriodicalId":6953,"journal":{"name":"Acta pathologica et microbiologica Scandinavica. Carcinomatous involvement of the lobules was found in 34 cases. In 16 of these cases, it was not possible to distinguish the lobular changes morphologically from lobular carcinoma in situ whereas, in 13 cases, carcinomatous extension to the lobules was found. In 5 cases the type of carcinomatous involvement of the lobules could not be established with certainty. In the 16 cases with lobular carcinoma in situ, 5 of the lesions were found at the edge of the invasive carcinoma, 4 were completely outside the tumour area, and in 7 cases the lesions were found both at the edge and completely outside the tumour area. In 59 per cent of cases the lesions were multicentric. Thirteen of the 16 cases presented lobular carcinoma in situ also in the upper quadrants. The diameter of the tumour was not related to the occurrence of lobular carcinoma in situ or to carcinomatous extension to the lobules. On the other hand, lobular carcinoma in situ was most frequent in highly differentiated carcinomas. A more detailed study of the biology of lobular carcinoma in situ, associated with invasive breast carcinoma, is considered necessary.","PeriodicalId":6953,"journal":{"name":"Acta pathologica et microbiologica Scandinavica. No single histological parameter appeared to any significant degree in cases with invasive carcinoma, whereas, in a few instances, this was the case when certain parameters were found concurrently. However, with our present knowledge, the result of a histological subclassification of LCIS cannot be decisive in the choice of treatment. Out of the 52 cases, 49 had fibro-adenomatosis concurrently; of these, 6 were of a high degree of severity, 4 had fibroadenoma, 1 had papilloma, 8 had ductectasia, 5 non-specific mastitis and 2 fat necrosis. Only occasionally was intracellular mucin found in cases of LCIS, whereas PAS-positive material was frequent. In a few cases very large mast cells were seen in the adjacent stroma, but the significance of this finding remains unclarified.","PeriodicalId":6953,"journal":{"name":"Acta pathologica et microbiologica Scandinavica. All the patients had normally functioning kidney transplants. The results obtained in the two groups were compared and both groups were compared with a series of noraml subjects where the age and sex distribution was the same. In the group of patients with osteonecrosis, the reduction in the amount of cancellous bone was found to be highly significant as compared with that in normal subjects and with that in the other group of patients. Apart from the reduction in bone, changes in all patients were characterized by an increased amount of osteoid and a low rate of mineralization, determined by double labelling with tetracycline. As there were no changes in the width of osteoid seams indicating osteomalacia, it is suggested that these patients suffered from a severe corticosteroid osteopenia.","PeriodicalId":6953,"journal":{"name":"Acta pathologica et microbiologica Scandinavica. Droplets with triglyceride, vacuoles emptied of fat, some with a fine network and a capsule like arrangement, and transition stages between the two patterns are studied electron microscopically and histochemically by OTAN and Oil Red O staining. No difference was found in respect to the G-cell density between the group of prepyloric and that with duodenal bulb ulcer, although a lower pentagastrin stimulated acid output and consequently a smaller parietal cell mass appeared to be present in the first group as compared to the second. No relationship was found in either group between fasting levels of serum-gastrin and G-cell density, suggesting that no constant relationship exists between G-cell density and activity under basal conditions. A positive relationship, although statistically insignificant (0.05 less than P less than 0.1) between peak acid output and G-cell density in patients with duodenal bulb ulcer, indicates that in these patients the parietal cell mass and G-cell density are interrelated. The present study could not confirm the entity of antral G-cell hyperplasia in duodenal ulcer patients.","PeriodicalId":6953,"journal":{"name":"Acta pathologica et microbiologica Scandinavica.
