In slices of rabbit kidney only 30 per cent was inactivated. Contrary to this there was only a slight, inconsistent, decrease in renin content in similarly incubated homogenates and extracts of uterine and renal tissue. The results show that intact tissue from both the kidney and especially the uterus have a capacity for inactivation of renin.","PeriodicalId":6953,"journal":{"name":"Acta pathologica et microbiologica Scandinavica. Ricinus communis I (RCA I) and Soybean (SBA) was examined in ameloblastomas and normal oral mucosa from 12 patients. The study utilized fluorescein-conjugated WGA, RCA I and SBA. Cell-membrane bound receptors for these 3 lectins were demonstrated in the spinous cell layer of the normal oral mucosa. WGA and RCA I receptors were also located in the basal cell layer, whereas SBA receptors were not detectable there. Cell-membrane bound WGA receptors were shown in the epithelial cells of the ameloblastomas. Titrations showed significant differences in staining reactivity related to the morphology of the peripheral epithelial cells of the ameloblastomas. The distribution of RCA I and SBA receptors in the peripheral cells was also related to the morphology of these cells and was independent of the histological types of the tumours. It is suggested that the distribution of these receptors is related to cellular activities such as cell differentiation and cell migration in the tumour and therefore possibly reflects the biological behavior of the tumours.","PeriodicalId":6953,"journal":{"name":"Acta pathologica et microbiologica Scandinavica. The patient had been given 40 ml of Thorotrast in connection with a neuro-radiological examination 34 years earlier. Clinically, the patient was now considered to be in an incipient myeloid leucaemic phase. Ninety-seven per cent of the bone marrow cells belonged to a clone with characteristic marker chromosomes induced by radiation. Few data are available on chromosome analysis of bone marrow cells from Thorotrast patients. Therefore, the results of the present study are compared with data from chromosome analyses of 32P-treated patients with polycythaemia vera, in whom large clones were found in the bone marrow. The results of chromosome analysis of bone marrow cells from the Thorotrast patient support previous hypotheses concerning the carcinogenesis in radiation-induced leucaemia in patients with polycythaemia vera, treated with 32P. In the latter patients, the clone cells are pressumed to represent cell populations with selective qualities, originating from radiation-damaged cells, which possibly possess an increased tendency to malignant transformation because of a more pronounced sensitivity to carcinogenic agents. The cells might also be potentially malignant and manifest themselves as leucaemic cells, if the patient's immunological defence mechanism is broken.","PeriodicalId":6953,"journal":{"name":"Acta pathologica et microbiologica Scandinavica. Thick sections (1 micrometer) showed light and dark cells in biliary epithelium and lipofuscin granules. At the ultrastructural level these were confirmed. The lumen of the bile ducts contained debris. The microvilli were decreased in number and damaged forms appeared. Damage to the biliary epithelial mitochondria was widespread and there were foci of intracellular oedema. The Golgi apparatus was hypertrophied and dilated. Atrophic cells were seen. The lateral intercellular spaces were dilated and contained debris and the basement membrane showed zones of duplication. Similar changes were found in the ducts of Hering.","PeriodicalId":6953,"journal":{"name":"Acta pathologica et microbiologica Scandinavica. Three were diagnosed histologically at surgery, three at autopsy. Four presented as solitary brain tumours which is unusual compared to other reported cases. In all six there was infiltration of the leptomeninges which must be regarded as the site of origin. Three of the cases have had a relatively long survival, two of them have died 2 years after the operation, and the third patient is still alive 18 months after surgery. It is suggested that the frequency of these tumours is underestimated on account of their resemblance to astroblastomas and poorly differentiated astrocytomas, and because biopsies are not always taken from small and atypical haematomas.","PeriodicalId":6953,"journal":{"name":"Acta pathologica et microbiologica Scandinavica. The LNA-splitting enzyme differs from the well-known leucine aminopeptidase (LAP) by its optimum at pH 5.5. The necessary long incubation period used in the present study, and its focal precipitation of the enzyme reaction product in the same place, like acid phosphatases, in the granular layer, suggest a lysosomal localization. The functional role of the LNA-splitting enzyme has been discussed; it is considered that it is involved not only in the protein transformation for synaptic function, but may perhaps also play an important pathogenic role in necrosis, atrophy or even autolysis.","PeriodicalId":6953,"journal":{"name":"Acta pathologica et microbiologica Scandinavica. The biopsies included in the study were taken within 4--30 days after transplantation because of suspected acute rejection, and histological examination revealed interstitial and vascular signs of rejection without the presence of cortical infarcts. Mesangial area per cent of total area was found to be significantly higher in allografts than in control kidneys, just as a statistically significant increase in the number of mesangial nuclei was demonstrated. Three of the 14 allografts had to be rechanges in these 3 biopsies were more pronounced than those in the remaining biopsies. It is suggested that quantitative glomerular studies might yield data of significance for prediction of the ultimate fate of the graft.","PeriodicalId":6953,"journal":{"name":"Acta pathologica et microbiologica Scandinavica.
