Several factors impact HRQoL including sociodemographic and skin disease-related characteristics, health behaviours, cardiometabolic comorbidities, and psychological conditions. However, their differential and unique effects on HRQoL are not well studied. In this cross-sectional online survey, adult patients with atopic dermatitis (n = 155) or psoriasis (n = 246) provided data on features of their respective skin diseases, health behaviours, and cardiometabolic comorbidities. Validated self-report measures assessed HRQoL, psychopathology (Patient Health Questionnaire-4), and stress (Perceived Stress Scale). Linear regression analyses were used to determine key predictors of HRQoL. In atopic dermatitis, linear regression analyses revealed that self-rated disease severity (Patient-Oriented Eczema Measure), anxiety, and stress were significant predictors of the Dermatology Life Quality Index (DLQI), explaining 59% of the variance. In psoriasis, disease severity (Psoriasis Symptoms and Signs Diary) and depression significantly predicted DLQI, with an explained variance of 57%. Health behaviours and cardiometabolic comorbidities did not impact DLQI scores. While skin disease severity is the most important determinant of HRQoL, stress and anxiety are important in atopic dermatitis, whereas depression is relevant in psoriasis. These findings hold implications for both clinical practice and research.</p>","PeriodicalId":6944,"journal":{"name":"Acta dermato-venereologica","volume":"105 ","pages":"adv42794"},"PeriodicalIF":3.5,"publicationDate":"2025-05-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC12105536/pdf/","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"144100988","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"医学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Current conventional treatments can have many side effects or are expensive. Emerging evidence suggests leukotriene receptor antagonists could serve as a corticosteroid-sparing option. This meta-analysis examined 26 studies on the efficacy of leukotriene receptor antagonists for treating atopic dermatitis across 742 participants. There were non-significant reductions in atopic dermatitis severity overall. However, in subgroup analyses montelukast significantly reduced Severity Scoring of Atopic Dermatitis scores in adult populations (SMD = -0.94, 95% CI -1.35 to -0.54, p < 0.0001) and also when compared with conventional treatment rather than placebo (SMD = -0.84, 95% CI -1.21 to -0.47, p < 0.0001). Studies excluded from the statistical analysis generally showed a positive trend favouring montelukast, even if results were not statistically significant. Montelukast shows potential as an adjunct therapy in atopic dermatitis, particularly in adults, but its efficacy is inconsistent. While it may help with pruritus, it should not replace standard treatments. Future research should focus on standardized assessments and personalized approaches to clarify its role in atopic dermatitis management.</p>","PeriodicalId":6944,"journal":{"name":"Acta dermato-venereologica","volume":"105 ","pages":"adv43140"},"PeriodicalIF":3.5,"publicationDate":"2025-05-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC12105541/pdf/","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"144101031","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"医学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

While HS has been associated with various comorbidities such as metabolic and chronic inflammatory diseases, many systemic effects of this systemic disease remain to be investigated. In this study, 2 cohorts of patients with and without HS were created - matched for sex, age, and nicotine dependence - each comprising 28,986 patients, using the real-world database TriNetX, to investigate the association of ocular diseases and HS. Not only an increased risk of disorders of refraction and accommodation in HS patients (OR 3.466; 95% CI 3.100, 3.876), but also a higher risk of ocular diseases, including disorders of the lacrimal system, was demonstrated when compared with the control cohort (OR 3.523; 95%CI 2.912, 4.263). Although previous studies have suggested an increased risk of ocular comorbidities in HS patients, ocular history is not routinely queried during visits. Here, the need for further exploration of the association of ocular diseases and HS and for incorporating this into clinical practice is emphasized.</p>","PeriodicalId":6944,"journal":{"name":"Acta dermato-venereologica","volume":"105 ","pages":"adv42716"},"PeriodicalIF":3.5,"publicationDate":"2025-05-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC12105537/pdf/","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"144101000","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"医学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
