In the absence of monophenolic compound, the degradation of atrazine was very quick at the first 2 min but then almost stopped. However, the degradation of atrazine with monophenolic compound was greatly enhanced. All atrazine was degraded within 10 min, also 4-CP degradation had a good efficiency. The enhancement of atrazine degradation was due to the higher concentration of Fe2+ in the presence of monophenolic compound. The intermediates of monophenolic compound such as hydroquinone and catechol reduced ferric ion quickly and promoted the Fenton reaction. The joint degradation of Cationic Red X-GRL with monophenolic compound also showed a similar result. This result suggested that the joint treatment of the pesticide or dyestuff-contaminated water with monophenolic wastewater to reduce Fe2+ input was feasible.","PeriodicalId":6399,"journal":{"name":"2008 2nd International Conference on Bioinformatics and Biomedical Engineering","volume":"14 1","pages":"2948-2951"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-05-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"78122974","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The measured ECG signals, because of the movable electrodes and the resulting unfixed contacts, demonstrate high baseline wandering phenomena and high noisy aberrations especially when the wearing person is in motion, making the heart-rate estimation a sophisticated work. To conquer this problem, the presented heart- rate estimator first uses the subspace technique to remove the baseline wandering in ECG signals, and then applies the adaptive notch filter (ANF) technique to obtain the heart- rate estimate. Experiments for ECG data from the person with initially sitting still through walking steadily to jogging, demonstrate that the presented method obtains heart- rate estimates which satisfactorily reflect the motion status of the person. The vital system embedded with the capability of real-time heart-rate estimation makes it highly suitable for applications of remote healthcare and wellness.","PeriodicalId":6399,"journal":{"name":"2008 2nd International Conference on Bioinformatics and Biomedical Engineering","volume":"12 1","pages":"1339-1342"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-05-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"72846651","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The success of the algorithm depends on its probability density model can better fit the signal inherent statistical distribution. For the problem that existing algorithms can not well fit the probability density model of source signals, this paper proposes an ICA algorithm based on the Generalized Gaussian Model (GGM). This new algorithm, combining with the Maximum Likelihood of ICA, utilizes GGM to fit the signal probability density model, and uses it to estimate Auditory Evoked Potential (AEP). Experiments show that the algorithm can fit the signal inherent statistical distribution very well and estimate purer Evoked Potential (EP) signals more effectively.","PeriodicalId":6399,"journal":{"name":"2008 2nd International Conference on Bioinformatics and Biomedical Engineering","volume":"80 1","pages":"573-576"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-05-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"72900444","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The yield and characteristics of sludge and wastewater treatment effects in the two reactors were analyzed in parallel. And the sludge observed yield coefficient (Yobs) were 0.0932 kgCOD/kgMLSS and 0.248 kgCOD/kgMLSS respectively. The maximal minus sludge production reached -0.244 kgCOD/kgMLSS for the grazing effect of metazoan in SBBR. The excess sludge yield was correlated with the metazoan growth status, and the breeding of metazoan would accelerate flocculation capability of bacteria and improve the performance of the sludge sedimentation apparently. The metabolism of metazoan would not influence the nitrification processes of wastewater treatment and the TN of effluent wouldn't increase. While due to the carbon source shortage of nitration, the reaction of metabolic uncoupling and the grazing of metazoan deduced the releasing of phosphate obviously.","PeriodicalId":6399,"journal":{"name":"2008 2nd International Conference on Bioinformatics and Biomedical Engineering","volume":"67 1","pages":"3368-3371"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-05-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"73169014","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Many investigators focus on the surface properties of biomaterials and scaffolds such as their topography, chemistry or surface energy, which very important for cell behaviors such as cell attachment, proliferation, extracellular matrix secretion, and differentiation. As the basic important element, however, the function of cell oneself should not be neglected. In this study, the adhesion and differentiation of mouse mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) overexpressing Cadherin-11 on materials were examined. MSCs were seeded into the large porous scaffolds, acellular bone extracellular matrix scaffolds. Alkaline phosphatase activity and osteocalcin content of MSCs overexpressing Cadherin-11, as the early stage and later stage osteoblast marke respectively, were upregulated. Scanning electron microscopy and biomechanics analysis showed cells spreading and growing well in the scaffolds and the adhesive force of cell-cell increased. The results indicate that Cadherin-11 is essential up-regulator of osteoblastic differentiation of MSCs on the scaffold surfaces. Our study may provide a potential method to obtain the engineering seeded cells in the process of tissue construction.","PeriodicalId":6399,"journal":{"name":"2008 2nd International Conference on Bioinformatics and Biomedical Engineering","volume":"70 1","pages":"929-932"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-05-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"79974499","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Result indicated that water-borne copper could cause a series of damages to cell structure of gills and hepatopancreas of crabs. Significant changes in ultrastructure of gills were found in the group exposed to 5.00 mg/l Cu2+compared with that of the control group showing as damaged epethelia, inhomogeneously distributed cutin electron density, uncompleted cells, combined basement membranes and cutin and great vacuoles formed between them. Meanwhile, other pathological changes on nuclear membrane, karyoplasms, mitochondrion and mitochondrial cristae and matrix were observed in the 5.00 mg/l copper treated group. In addition,infolded basement membrane, circularized nucleus, and decreased even disappeared microville were also identified in the ultrastructure of gills. Some hemocytes were heterochromained, and nucleuses were deformed. Similarly, obvious changes in ultrastructure of the hepatopancreas were found in the group treated with 5.00 mg/l Cu2+ compared with that of the control group. Epithelia were deformed, nucleus circularized, the nuclear membrane disintegrated karyoplasms heterochromained. Cytoplasm thinned, organelle decreased, epithelia showed swelling and deforming, the basement membrane were rumpled, vacuoles formed between the basement membrane and columnar epithelium, mitochondrial cristae partly disappeared, the microvilli showed partly falling.","PeriodicalId":6399,"journal":{"name":"2008 2nd International Conference on Bioinformatics and Biomedical Engineering","volume":"27 1","pages":"4436-4443"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-05-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"80279588","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Because the sample size in 2D DIGE experiments is usually very small, the traditional statistical methods such as student t-test could not provide an accurate and reliable detection/identification of differentially expressed protein spots. This paper proposed a ranking based approach for DE protein spot identification, in which the information of comparative ranks of the protein spot volume ratio rather than their distribution were used in selection. Two methods were designed to integrate the ranking information from a set of pair-wise comparisons. The evaluation results demonstrated that the proposed methods are effective in DE protein spot identification when sample size is small.","PeriodicalId":6399,"journal":{"name":"2008 2nd International Conference on Bioinformatics and Biomedical Engineering","volume":"1 1","pages":"620-623"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-05-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"76649714","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To assure socio-economic sustainable development, how to effectively evaluate the trends of urban ecosystem health is a key issue for ecological planning. The paper established an evaluation model of urban ecosystem health based on the approaches of entropy weight and fuzzy logic mathematics, which avoided the uncertainty in estimating the standard of urban ecosystem health subjectively. Wuhan urban ecosystem was selected as an example for application and its health conditions from 1993 to 2004 was assessed. The results showed that: (1) The relative health status of Wuhan urban ecosystem health increased from 1993 to 2004. The most healthy year was 2003, and the least healthy year was 1994. (2) Based on the maximum membership degree principle, the maximum membership degree in human health group was 0.7627 (2003), in ecosystem service function group was 1.000 (2004), in social group was 1.000 (2001), in economic group was 0.9561 (2004), in environmental group was 0.7526 (1998).","PeriodicalId":6399,"journal":{"name":"2008 2nd International Conference on Bioinformatics and Biomedical Engineering","volume":"39 1","pages":"4405-4408"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-05-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"76941415","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
