Frailty, a syndrome of reduced physiological reserves, has been linked to various chronic diseases, but its association with AR remains unclear. This study aimed to explore the relationship between frailty and AR in a large-scale, population-based cohort.MethodsIn this retrospective cross-sectional study, 24,269 participants from the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey were categorized into AR and non-AR groups based on self-reported history. Frailty was assessed using the modified frailty phenotype (FP) and frailty index (FI). Multivariate logistic regression analysis was used to assess the association, with subgroup analyses performed by demographic and clinical factors.ResultsFrailty measured by FP (OR = 1.251, 95% CI [1.060, 1.476]) and FI (OR: 1.587, 95% CI [1.116, 2.257]) was associated with an increased risk of AR, particularly pronounced in males (OR = 1.516, 95% CI [1.134, 2.027]), younger (OR = 1.298, 95% CI [1.022, 1.648]) and middle-aged adults (OR = 1.372, 95% CI [1.024, 1.838]), individuals with a high school education (OR = 1.482, 95% CI [1.135, 1.934]), those with a body mass index ≥ 25 (OR = 1.823, 95% CI [1.388, 2.395]), and white-collar workers (OR = 1.361, 95% CI [1.051, 1.761]), and those with higher family income (OR = 1.433, 95% CI [1.072, 1.914]), a history of smoking (OR = 1.265, 95% CI [1.040, 1.535]), and frequent alcohol consumption (OR = 1.578, 95% CI [1.091, 2.282]). Further analysis indicated that the heightened risk of AR associated with frailty may be attributed to increased levels of emotional exhaustion (OR: 1.334, 95% CI [1.178, 1.510]).ConclusionsFrailty is independently associated with a higher prevalence of AR, highlighting the need for comprehensive management strategies addressing both physical and mental health in AR patients.</p>","PeriodicalId":56061,"journal":{"name":"Science Progress","volume":"108 3","pages":"368504251381587"},"PeriodicalIF":2.9,"publicationDate":"2025-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"145152065","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"综合性期刊","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Modern flexible endoscopy was introduced to the Solomon Islands National Referral Hospital (NRH) in 2012, but little is known about gastrointestinal disease in the country.MethodsThis retrospective cohort study describes trends in upper gastrointestinal diseases to inform local research and health programming. Demographic, clinical, and endoscopic data, including rapid urease test (RUT) results for <i>H. pylori</i>, were abstracted from consecutively entered patient medical records at the NRH.ResultsA total of 761 patients underwent upper endoscopy and RUT (2019-2022). Although RUT was positive in only 25.8% of patients (<i>N</i> = 196), relatively common findings of erosions (<i>N</i> = 90, 11.8%) and ulcers (<i>N</i> = 89, 11.7%), as well as frequently reported symptoms of upper gastrointestinal bleeding (<i>N</i> = 168, 22.1%), suggest a higher true prevalence of <i>H. pylori</i>-associated peptic ulcer disease in this cohort. Age was associated with an endoscopic finding of ulcers on univariate analysis. Multivariable modeling indicated a significant association between the presence of gastric erythema and erosions and the diagnosis of duodenitis. Multivariable regression also showed symptoms of melena and hematemesis to be significantly associated with the endoscopic finding of ulcers. Among patients treated for <i>H. pylori</i> who underwent follow-up endoscopy and RUT, 28.8% failed treatment.ConclusionThere was a high degree of concern regarding gastrointestinal symptomology and pathology in this cohort. Mutations in BSND, CLCNKA, and CLCNKB cause the disorder. We present a 3-year-old girl with BS type 4 and sensorineural hearing loss who received cochlear implantation (CI) after failing a hearing screening. The patient had a successful left-side implantation but later developed a flap infection, initially treated with antibiotics and surgical repair using a vascularized flap, which failed. During the same repair procedure, the right ear was implanted successfully. A third surgery was required to remove the left implant and close the wound with a temporoparietal flap, performed by plastic surgery. This is the earliest report on managing device extrusion in BS. The literature review highlights that the outcomes of CI in patients with BS vary significantly within each syndrome group and that the presence of additional disabilities accentuates this diversity. Our case illustrates that CI can improve the quality of life for patients with BS, but a multidisciplinary team is crucial for managing these cases. We stress the need for further studies to evaluate realistic outcomes and complication rates, as this will guide future treatment strategies.</p>","PeriodicalId":56061,"journal":{"name":"Science Progress","volume":"108 3","pages":"368504251349390"},"PeriodicalIF":2.6,"publicationDate":"2025-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC12217578/pdf/","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"144531294","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"综合性期刊","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The most commonly used redox couples in VRFB systems are V2+/V3+ and V4+/V5+ which typically require the use of costly VOSO4 standard solution. In this study we propose an alternatve approch by substituting these expensive solutions with more affordable and environmentally friendly option: a V2O5 solution derived from spent catalyst.MethodCharacterization of the recovered vanadium solutions, incorporation of these solutions were performed in a three electrode cell and in a real bench-top vanadium storage battery model, and the performance of the constructed battery was tested using different electrochemical techniques such as cyclic voltammetry.ResultThe increasing current and potential observed were proportional to the concentration of the recovered solution. Furthermore, an in-house tabletop VRFB utilizing the recovered electrolyte exhibited promising electrochemical properties, achieving a maximum discharge potential of 2.0 V after 180 minutes of electrical charging and a maximum current of 83.5 mA. These results are encouraging for the utilization of recovered vanadium solutions in VRFBs.ConclusionThis study results are encouraging for the utilization of recovered vanadium solutions in VRFBs. This study retrospectively assessed the influence of preoperative lipid and lipoprotein levels on non-small cell lung cancer progression and prognosis, stratified by age.MethodsIn this retrospective study, we analyzed 849 patients to investigate the association between lipid markers and lung cancer progression, and examined postoperative prognosis in a subset of 222 patients. Data was analyzed using restricted cubic spline curves, Kaplan-Meier survival analysis, and Cox proportional hazards models.ResultsA significant nonlinear relationship was observed between total cholesterol (TC), high-density lipoprotein (HDL), ApoB, ApoAI, ApoE, and baseline tumor diameter (BSLD) (PTC = 0.025; PHDL < 0.001; PApoB = 0.037; PApoAI =0.001; PApoE < 0.001). Despite being an economically valuable plant species, the molecular mechanisms regulating the responses of peach (<i>Prunus davidiana</i>) to drought stress and the functional genes conferring drought resistance are currently unknown. In this study, we investigated the phenotypic and physiological responses of peach seedlings to experimental conditions that included a control, a period of drought stress, and a rehydration period. We performed transcriptome sequencing and investigated differences in the transcriptome of peach seedlings exposed to different treatments. We also analyzed the functions and regulatory pathways of differentially expressed genes using GO and KEGG enrichment. The results showed that severe drought stress occurred in the peach seedlings on the sixth day of drought, and that the physiological responses of peach seedlings experiencing drought stress were significantly different from those in control conditions. We found 21348 differentially expressed genes in peach seedlings under drought stress, of which 10105 were up-regulated and 11243 were down-regulated in comparison with peach seedlings in control conditions. These differentially expressed genes were mainly involved in the biosynthesis of amino acids, metabolic pathways, antioxidant defense systems and the plant hormone signal transduction system. The results suggest that peach seedlings respond to severe drought stress by initiating antioxidant defense mechanisms to alleviate damages, activating different signal transduction pathways to transmit signals, regulating the synthesis of amino acids, and initiating metabolic mechanisms to enhance osmotic pressure. This study illuminates the mechanisms for drought resistance in peach seedlings at the molecular level.
