ABSTRACT Starting from 1404, with the publication of Christine de Pizan's Città delle dame , in Europe we are witnessing the birth of the complex debate around the nature and virtues of women. There are many authors and authors who actively participate in the Querelle des femmes, questioning the social, artistic and political role of women. Defenders and detractors of the female cause confront each other through polarizing discourses that characterize and occupy over two centuries of European literature. The works of the controversy question the image of women as a naturally inferior subject, retracing the history of access to education and marriage relationships. The classical tradition of exempla is used by various authors who use female models belonging to history and mythology to affirm and defend equality between the sexes. Much of the information we have about Bembo’s personal life comes from his private letters wich were first published in 1552, in a five-volume Venetian edition at Scotto that included the Epistolarum familiarium Libri VI , in Latin, plus four volumes of letters in volgare , divided per recipient: the first to pontiffs, cardinals and clergymen, the second to Venetian friends, the third to gentlemen and friends in general, the fourth to women Among the recipients of the letters to women are Maria Savorgnan, whose loving relationship with the author will mark the history of the first edition of Gli Asolani , and Lucrezia Borgia, to whom Bembo will dedicate the editio princeps of the dialogue in 1505. In the next pages, we will discuss the author’s relationship with Maria Savorgnan and Lucrezia Borgia and the intellectual affinity at the base of their affective bond. This work was carried out as part of the research project, Men for Women. Its author – educated at the court of the Duchy of Milan – stood out among the most notable humanists of his time from the position of Secretary of Francesco II Sforza. Galeazzo Flavio Capra wrote the work in vulgar prose, reworking classical models and reinterpreting Petrarch, Boccaccio, as well as other contemporary writers, both Italian and French. With his writing, the author chose to align himself \"with the opinion of those who strive to discover the error of many, who are so anxious in aviliating the feminil sex\" (FILOGENIO, 1589, p. viii) and in this way preserve women from the reproach manifested by hegemonic machismo while praising their virtues. Stella","doi":"10.24206/lh.v8i3.56320","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.24206/lh.v8i3.56320","url":null,"abstract":"Cristoforo Bronzini’s Dialogo della dignità e nobiltà delle donne (Dialogue on the dignity and nobility of women), a monumental work in twenty-four volumes dedicated to Queen Margaret of Austria, was nipped in the bud by the Congregation of the Index immediately after the printing of its Parte prima in 1622. Starting with an analysis of Bronzini’s manuscript Dichiaratione in defence of his text, this essay aims to reconstruct the problematic loci that hindered the work’s dissemination from the outset, namely the author’s courageous reflections on the sacred scriptures, contrary to Decree II of Session IV of the Council of Trent on the interpretation of sacred texts. In the midst of the century, a type of dialog relative to love and female beauty is spread, taking place in a freer and less elitist environment that the ones proposed in the examples by Bembo and Castiglione. This study aims to analyze Dialogo d´amore (1562) by the renowned humanist and women´s advocate Lodovico Domenichi. It is a lesser known text, but a highly representative one of the poetic antinomy physical love – spiritual love, which imbued the cultural debate of the era, hinting a more down-to-earth style than the amorous neo-platonism of Leon Hebreo. Tsolkas","doi":"10.24206/lh.v8i3.56314","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.24206/lh.v8i3.56314","url":null,"abstract":"In the collective book Dieci paradosse degli Accademici Intronati (1564), a woman’s defense of her right not to love her lover back is evident in a cultural context dominated by the Neoplatonic philosophy of love. Although the theme of ingratitude was of obvious interest for sixteenth-century Italian intellectuals, an important new feature lies in the form chosen by the twenty scholars who sign the volume: the paradox. In this book, several of the Intronati address this question and manage to surprise the public by providing arguments that exonerate women by revisiting the hackneyed, rigid Neoplatonic concepts of love in the 1660s. In this essay, the theme of female ingratitude is analyzed mainly in paradoxes four (“That tyrants do not do what they wish”), seven (“That the one that does not love should be loved more than the one that loves”) and nine (“That a woman should love an ugly man more than a handsome one”). The ideas expressed therein are related to the works of important intellectuals of this time who deal with the same subject in a sometimes very discordant way: Alessandro Piccolomini, Vitale Zuccolo and Benedetto Varchi.
