Abstract

The work entitled Dell'eccellenza della donna is a speech that Hercole Filogenio wrote in 1589 and dedicated to Flavia Peretti Orsina, a distinguished woman of her time and endowed with a restless spirit who with her interests contributed to the development of the society in which she lived. With his writing, the author chose to align himself "with the opinion of those who strive to discover the error of many, who are so anxious in aviliating the feminil sex" (FILOGENIO, 1589, p. viii) and in this way preserve women from the reproach manifested by hegemonic machismo while praising their virtues. This article comments and analyzes the first conclusion reached by Filogenio, as well as his rays that allowed him to get there, that the Woman in many respects and mainly for the sharpness of the intellect is superior and more excellent than man.
