It uses an anthropological approach with case studies in Jakarta, the capital city of Indonesia, and Serang, the capital city of Banten Province. Jakarta and Serang were chosen because Jakarta is a picture-perfect example of an older area characterized by the abundance of middle-class Muslims and the vehemence of ḥalāl lifestyle, while Serang represents a newer area in this regard. Moreover, this article explores the understanding and practices of religious rituals, as well as the responses of urban middle-class Muslim women towards commodified goods and services, consumerism behavior, and communal piety. We argue that the use of cosmetics and beauty treatments has become one of the most glaring public expressions that has concurrently influenced the way urban middle-class Muslim women perceive themselves, beauty, and piety. In addition, we contend that the understanding and practices of beauty and piety are becoming increasingly complex in urban areas. Finally, we maintain that ḥalāl lifestyle has played an important role in strengthening Islamic identity in contemporary Indonesia.","PeriodicalId":55654,"journal":{"name":"Ulumuna","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-06-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"48070401","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This qualitative study used the purposive sampling method to select the participants, including five college leaders and 50 lecturers from UIN Ar-Raniry, IAIN Lhokseumawe, University of Muhammadiyah Aceh, STIS Al-Hilal Sigli, and STAI Teungku Chik Pante Kulu. The data were collected through interviews, observation, and documentation. The research shows that the strategy for developing an Islamic Sharia-based Curriculum (KBSI) at PTKI in Aceh is conducted by an integrated model, separated subject curriculum and correlated curriculum. The policy for developing an Islamic sharia-based curriculum at PTKI in Aceh refers to philosophical, sociological, historical, and juridical foundations in the form of Aceh qanuns. It further finds that the development of an Islamic sharia-based curriculum at PTKI in Aceh is an effort to guide the young Acehnese generations who are sharia-compliant and tolerant using special autonomy opportunities. Meanwhile, the difficulties in developing this curriculum are due to Aceh's internal and external PTKI factors. The obstacles are due to internal factors where PTKI leaders do not respond to the opportunities for KBSI reconstruction. On the other hand, obstacles also deal with external factors where collaboration between PTKI and the Aceh government in the context of KBSI reconstruction is less optimal.","PeriodicalId":55654,"journal":{"name":"Ulumuna","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-06-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"42885407","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, fulfilling these objectives in the best possible way according to the principle of maqāṣid al-sharī’ah(the objective of Islamic law) within the framework of the dual system of Malaysian law is challenging. Preserving faith within maqāṣid al-sharī’ah discussion provides enormous opportunities for Muslims to nurture and protect their Islamic faith while regulating the laws that prohibit any harmful elements that could jeopardize it. The Federal Constitution of Malaysia guarantees everyone's freedom of religion. However, freedom of religion provided under Malaysian law has restrictions due to the uniqueness of Malaysian history. This article critically discusses the maqasidic-approach adopted to preserve Muslim child's faith. This article examines the government's effort to maintain Muslim child's faith concerning the laws and policies of education and Malaysian law on issues linked to the conversion of Muslims to other faiths and vice versa. The court decision on child's religion cases indicates a distinct feature of Muslim and non-Muslims' right to freedom of religion under Malaysian law. There are prospects for utilizing the maqāṣid al-sharī’ah framework effectively to promote the preservation of a child's faith in the context of Malaysian law.","PeriodicalId":55654,"journal":{"name":"Ulumuna","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-06-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"43344126","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In a more detailed manner, this article explores the idea of sharia as the main ingredient in the framing process and explores the movement's strategy to resonate with this frame, which then opens up opportunities for the formation of a wave of support for serial movement actions in Medan, North Sumatra. With the framing model in social movement studies, the data was collected from observations and interviews with several movement actors, and several supporting documents. This study found that the idea of this movements such as “Negara Kesatuan Republik Indonesia Bersyari’ah” (Indonesia Nation State based on Sharia) which is close to the social psychology of the masses met with the right events to generate great support for the movement. The ability of the elites to concoct the movement ideas, and the management of social media to spread such framing, made a mass wave of supporters strengthen. The struggle for sharia in the public space played by the movement here basically does not have a clear political agenda unless, temporarily, it is used only in electoral momentum, resonating as an expressive channel of the defeat against other groups in controlling the city's political economy space. Here, I argue that the study of ideology in social movements requires an expansion of dimensions that can explain more fully why a movement immediately grows or shrinks briefly or lasts a long time.","PeriodicalId":55654,"journal":{"name":"Ulumuna","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-06-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"46967669","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The pesantren is Bali Bina Insani (BBI) in which there are Muslim and Hindu teachers. The organic tolerance, capital, and management of harmony with the accommodation of some Hindu teachers is a certainty. Data collection was carried out through documentation, participant observation, and in-depth interviews, then qualitatively analyzed. The results showed that the capital of the pesantren in harmonizing Muslim and Hindu teachers is tolerant (tasāmuh) and inclusive. Aligned with the pesantren's vision and mission is realizing Islam raḥmah li al-‘ālamīn in all community services and making friends with all people regardless of ethnic, racial, cultural, and religious diversity. In this context, organic tolerance which was developed by pesantren is a certainty. Also, the management of harmony has been implemented professionally. The pesantren does not emphasize religious symbols, but it concerns the essence of Islamic orthodoxy. The pesantren management never questioned the differences of ethnic, racial, cultural, and religious of some teachers. For them, the most important thing is doing their jobs very well and professionally according to their authority. So, the harmony in this pesantren is organic.","PeriodicalId":55654,"journal":{"name":"Ulumuna","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"46637424","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, since 2020, sexual and physical abuses have occurred in pesantren that attract public attention. This phenomenon indirectly made many parties question the existence of pesantren. Based on the government directives, pesantren was supposed to be a safe and comfortable environment for learners. This paper presents the efforts of four pesantren in Indonesia to become child-friendly places. Findings based on the qualitative study reported in this paper show that child-friendly pesantren program has been initiated and developed by main figures, such as Kyai/nyai (pesantren leader), ustadz/ustadzah (teachers), and students (santri). Each pesantren has almost the same exertions, namely optimizing three main areas; subjects, management, and infrastructure, but the characteristics of the pesantren still impact the detail stages employed. For instance, Salaf pesantren still strive traditionally, while modern and semi-modern pesantren have begun to adapt to technological advances and current needs.","PeriodicalId":55654,"journal":{"name":"Ulumuna","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-12-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"45323634","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This mixed-method study gathered primary data through interview and observation, while the secondary data were gained from relevant literature sources. This study uncovered two significant findings using education management and social change theories. First, the dynamics of education system governance at several pesantren  in Madura have undergone a transformation over the past decade. This transformation is highlighted by the emergence of an accelerated learning system at several pesantrens. Second, implementing an accelerated learning program in the pesantren is conducted by performing modernization on the education governance, entailing two aspects, curriculum and period of study. In the curriculum aspect, accelerated learning and modernization takes shape in the form of learning material implementation based on Takhassus (specialization) program, which uses summaries of several subjects compiled from various book references or sources of the same discipline. In addition, through the takhassus program, each learner can manage and complete their study period in a shorter time.","PeriodicalId":55654,"journal":{"name":"Ulumuna","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-12-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"44147466","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

While the previous campaign was characterized by the important role of public intellectuals, such as Gus Dur, Romo Mangunwijaya and Th. Sumartana; the new generation of campaigners adopt more community-based advocacy movement. The shift into a new turn specifically refers to two phenomena; 1) change of the modes and practices of interfaith dialogue movement at the society level and 2) the idea of recent interfaith originates more from communities rather than from prominent public intellectuals. These two phenomena basically show the opportunities and challenges for the future of interfaith dialogue campaign. The study uses two methods, namely archival and case study based on the empirical data from Makassar and Yogyakarta in the mid 2022. The findings show that advocating interfaith dialogues through communities as adopted by the new generation of campaigners apparently more effective for young generations than what is experienced before 1998. It generates the recent interfaith dialogue among young people to be intimate. The findings also implies that the religious moderation discourse and campaign recently propagated by the Ministry of Religious Affairs need to be critically assessed. These two findings interestingly show the conservatives’ involvement that eager to join interfaith campaign in order to curb hardliner stigma.","PeriodicalId":55654,"journal":{"name":"Ulumuna","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-12-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"48024324","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This study explores the efforts to prevent radicalism by implementing academic policies at State Islamic Higher Education based on experiences at IAIN Bukittinggi, UIN Jakarta, UIN Malang, and IAIN Tulungagung. It employed an ethnographic research method that collected the data through in-depth interviews, extensive observations, and documentation as data collection techniques. The results show that efforts to prevent radicalism were evidenced in the application of general policies of religious moderation in the curriculum and various campus community activities, introduction of campus mottos, tightening of students' selection system, orientation to campus life for new students, strengthening the academic atmosphere, and strengthening students' hard skills, abilities, and soft skills. These show that Islamic higher institutions are actively invloved in the eradication of religious radicalization.","PeriodicalId":55654,"journal":{"name":"Ulumuna","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-12-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"42444725","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
