{"title":"Neuropatía diabética y su relación con la calidad de vida en pacientes con diabetes tipo 2","authors":"Jarek Ramón Arévalo Ramírez , Daniela Leticia Castañón Sánchez , Oscar Isaías Vargas Ordoñez , Hilda Sara Camarena Velázquez , María del Carmen Aguirre García , Mónica Catalina Osorio Granjeno","doi":"10.1016/j.aprim.2026.103454","DOIUrl":"10.1016/j.aprim.2026.103454","url":null,"abstract":"<div><h3>Objective</h3><div>To determine the association between diabetic neuropathy (DN) and quality of life (QoL) in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM2).</div></div><div><h3>Setting</h3><div>Family Medicine Unit No. 33 (UMF 33), El Rosario, Azcapotzalco, Mexico City, Mexico.</div></div><div><h3>Design</h3><div>Observational, analytical, cross-sectional.</div></div><div><h3>Participants</h3><div>365 participants aged 18 years or older with a diagnosis of DM2, ascribed to a specialized diabetes care program.</div></div><div><h3>Measurements</h3><div>A sociodemographic questionnaire and two standardized instruments were applied: the Michigan Neuropathy Screening Instrument (MNSI), in its questionnaire (MNSIQ) and physical examination (MNSIEF) components and the SF-12v2 questionnaire to assess QoL through its physical (PCS) and mental (MCS) components. Frequencies and percentages were analyzed. The chi-square test was used for inferential statistics.</div></div><div><h3>Results</h3><div>According to the MNSIQ, 35.6% presented signs of ND, while the MNSIEF it was detected in 99.2% of the participants. 59.5% reported good physical QoL, while 61.4% reported poor mental QoL. Although descriptive differences were notable, the statistical power was limited to demonstrate consistent associations between ND and QoL.</div></div><div><h3>Conclusions</h3><div>The findings suggest a discordance between patient self-perception and physical examination. ND could have a negative impact on QoL, especially on the mental component (MCS). To compare the prevalences estimated with two sources, the absolute differences between them were calculated together with their 95% confidence interval (95%<span>C</span>I).</div></div><div><h3>Results</h3><div>In Galicia, when comparing ENSE and SICRI, the absolute differences in SHS exposure prevalences exceeded 10 percentage points in five of six editions. In Catalonia, when comparing ENSE and ESCA, the differences ranged from 1.5 to 14.2 points. The 95%CI analysis of the absolute differences showed that for Galicia and Catalonia the differences were significant in four and five of the six years compared, respectively.</div></div><div><h3>Conclusions</h3><div>In Spain, large differences are observed in the estimation of SHS exposure prevalence depending on the data source. These differences are greater the less specific the area studied. Smoking is a risk factor that is known to cause various health issues, and has been associated with CLBP, but the specific relationship between smoking and chronic low back pain has still not been well explored.</div></div><div><h3>Objective</h3><div>This study aims to investigate the association between smoking and chronic low back pain among medical students in Iraq.</div></div><div><h3>Design</h3><div>A descriptive cross-sectional design was employed, involving face-to-face interviews with 200 medical students aged 18 years and older. Data were collected on the demographic characteristics, smoking behaviors, and chronic pain experiences, using a pre-designed questionnaire. Statistical analysis was performed using SPSS (version 25) and employing chi-square tests to assess the association between the smoking status and chronic low back pain.</div></div><div><h3>Site</h3><div>Baghdad University, College of Medicine.</div></div><div><h3>Participants</h3><div>Two hundred medical students aged 18 years and older.</div></div><div><h3>Interventions</h3><div>No intervention.</div></div><div><h3>Main measurements</h3><div>Demographic characteristics, smoking behaviors, and chronic pain experiences.</div></div><div><h3>Results</h3><div>A significant proportion of students (51%) reported smoking currently, with cigarettes being the most commonly used product. The prevalence of CLBP was 64%, with an average pain severity of 4.6 (±1.61). Notably, among smokers, 81 individuals reported experiencing CLBP compared to 47 non-smokers (<em>p</em> <!-->=<!--> <!-->0.0001), indicating a strong association between smoking and the presence of CLBP.</div></div><div><h3>Conclusion</h3><div>The findings highlight a significant association between smoking and CLBP among medical students, emphasizing the need for targeted interventions to address smoking cessation and the prevention of CLBP in this high-risk population. Main symptoms of CMPA were digestive. At the follow-up visit, infants showed an improvement of the digestive symptoms, such as blood in stools, food refusal, dysphagia, diarrhea, vomiting, colic, abdominal distension, or frequent regurgitation.</div></div><div><h3>Conclusions</h3><div>In accordance with recommendations from clinical guidelines, eHFs are the first treatment option for mild and moderate cases of CMPA. Nevertheless, this present study also confirms the use of HRFs as first treatment option. Inclusion: menstruated. Recruitment was via social media and health centers. No dropouts were recorded.</div></div><div><h3>Main measures</h3><div>Knowledge of contraceptive methods, method usage and influencing factors, assessed via a structured, validated questionnaire.</div></div><div><h3>Results</h3><div>The most known methods were the pill and male condom. Only 24.3% correctly identified the most effective methods. Regarding STI protection, 91.6% answered correctly. Most used methods were the pill and male condom. Safety and effectiveness were the most valued criteria. Medical advice was highly influential. Statistically significant associations were found between sociodemographic factors and knowledge/choice.</div></div><div><h3>Conclusions</h3><div>Despite high general knowledge, gaps remain regarding effectiveness.
