Spatial surveys were carried out with the Rio Grande 600 kHz ADCP, which revealed the main characteristics of currents and the presence of internal waves generated by river inflow into the sea. Internal waves were recorded on two transects oriented along the normal to the coastline and extending to depths of 100 m. The observed waves had the features of nonlinear waves, were located on the near-surface thermocline, and had heights of up to 3–6 m. Also, short-period internal waves in the form of a wave train with an apparent period of about 3.5 min were recorded by a thermistor chain in the coastal zone of the sea. The dispersion curves and eigenfunctions of internal waves were calculated by numerically solving the internal wave equation, taking into account the velocity shift in the sea. Theoretical data are compared with experimental data. The significant influence of river inflow on the parameters of the generated internal waves moving with the flow was revealed. The experimentally observed decrease in wave periods and increase in their group and phase velocities were confirmed.
","PeriodicalId":54692,"journal":{"name":"Oceanology","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":1.0,"publicationDate":"2024-01-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139398403","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"地球科学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This inlet is inhabited by seagrass Zostera marina L. which forms vast underwater meadows here. Samples were collected in 2008–2009, before the ongoing rise of salinity in the Sea of Azov. Three main biotopes with different bottom sediment composition (sands, sands with shells, and silts) were identified. They were inhabited by four main macrobenthic biocenoses (unvegetated near-shore biocenosis, mosaic macrophyte vegetation outside the surf zone, pure eelgrass’s meadows belt, and the communities, dominated by the mobile macrozoobenthos species with low abundance of macrophytes occupying the central part of the bay). The main environmental factor associated with this distribution of the vegetation was the silt content (grain size <0.001 mm). The material was collected on two quasimeridional transects conducted in the latitudinal range ~71°00′–75°30′ N from the inner shelf adjacent to the Indigirka and Kolyma outfalls to the outer shelf during September 5–9, 2017. The list of species and larger taxa, as well as their biomass and trophic characteristics, are presented, and the peculiarities of cross-shelf distribution in relation to the conditions of the pelagic environment are described. The obtained estimates of the mezoplankton biomass in the ESS are on the whole within the range typical of the rest of the Siberian Seas in summer–fall. It has been established that mezoplankton communities of the western and eastern ESS significantly differ in quantitative characteristics, the role of dominant species and taxonomic groups in biomass, grazing impact of mesoplankton on the phytoplankton biomass and production, and features of the cross-shelf distribution of these characteristics. The boundary between the communities with different structural functional characteristics is located approximately at 160°–163° E. A conclusion is made that analysis of climatic and seasonal changes in ESS mezoplankton should be examined with allowance for the principal differences between pelagic biotopes and communities of the western and eastern parts of the basin.
","PeriodicalId":54692,"journal":{"name":"Oceanology","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":1.0,"publicationDate":"2024-01-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139398458","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"地球科学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A sandy beach located in the water area of the “Park of the 300th Anniversary of St. Petersburg”, the Neva Bay of the Gulf of Finland of the Baltic Sea, is considered as an object. The beach is actively affected by wind waves and eventually washes away with the intensity of the retreat of the shore of about 4 m per year. For numerical modeling, a set of models is used: SWAN–wind-wave model and COASTOX-UN–a two-dimensional model of currents, sediment transport and bottom reformation. It was developed a model of the Neva Bay and the mouth of the Neva River from the Flood Prevention Facility Complex in the west to the river Neva near the Liteiny Bridge in the east. Based on the reanalysis of wind data, 36 strong storms were selected for a five-year period from 2014 to 2018, for the sequence of which numerical modeling of waves, currents and lithodynamic processes was carried out. It was obtained balances of alluvial and washouts after a ten-years simulated period for beach sectors.
