Tasks such as collection development, applications for funding, or consulting researchers on publication venues require a solid base of data, which is not always easily available to librarians. Funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF), the Open Access Monitor Germany (OAM) aims to provide libraries, funders, and researchers with a freely available tool that presents data on publications and citations for analysis. The OAM records the publication output of German academic institutions in scientific journals. Through analyses of subscription fees and (open access) publication fees, it helps to monitor and support the transition of the publishing system toward an open access system. To this end, data from existing sources are collated within an expanded database, made available to users in an open interface, and disseminated by means of scientific publications. The OAM draws on sources such as Unpaywall, Dimensions, Web of Science, Scopus, and OpenAPC. Unpaywall is used as a central data source for publication metadata including open access availability; this data is then matched with Crossref data for journal-level metadata and finally with Dimensions, Web of Science and Scopus data for affiliations and citation data. The connection to OpenAPC provides data on publication costs for each participating institution. The interface https://open-access-monitor.de/publications presents users with a wide range of filters that can be used to customize the underlying data in line with specific needs. Users can switch between Dimensions, Web of Science and Scopus affiliations and make use of different analysis types including publication analyses, cost analyses, and citation analyses. Results are presented as tables as well as charts and can be downloaded for further use. In the future, additional data sources including subscriptions to scientific journals and subscription payments will be integrated to allow the shift in payment flows in the changing publication market to be observed. The integration of data from the electronic resource management system LAS:eR has already been initiated and will soon be completed. Moreover, interfaces will be created to connect the Alma and FOLIO systems. Together with data on publication costs, this will provide participating institutions with easily accessible overview of their total costs, thus enabling them to calculate an integrated budget for subscriptions and publications. Institutions using the OAM are advised with regard to analyzing data and technically integrating the OAM into their own applications. Small and medium-sized publishers from German-speaking countries are supported in the negotiation of transformation contracts by means of data from the OAM. In many cases, they have a significant correlation with each other. However, there is a minimal amount of evidence regarding the correlation between these two variables in highly-cited articles. The present study aimed to investigate the correlation between the number of Mendeley readers and the number of citations in highly-cited medical articles. The research population includes all highly-cited articles in various fields of medicine indexed in the Web of Science (WoS) in 2016. The number of citations was extracted from the WoS, and the number of Mendeley readers was extracted using the webometric analyst. Findings revealed that the most Mendeley readers are related to the field of general and internal medicine with an average of 570.43, and the lowest is dedicated to otorhinolaryngology with an average of 86.2. Also, the highest average citation belongs to general and internal medicine (338.18) and the lowest to nursing (40.84). Pearson correlation coefficient showed that the relationship between the number of Mendeley readers and the number of citations received by all medical articles is positive and significant (p-value <0.001, r = 0.644). In various fields of medicine, except orthopedics, there is a positive and significant relationship between two variables. Evidence suggests that Mendeley data can determine the effectiveness of articles. It seems that more researchers’ use of Mendeley will increase the visibility and readers of the articles and, as a result, will lead to more citations.","PeriodicalId":54165,"journal":{"name":"Serials Review","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.9,"publicationDate":"2022-04-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"45404190","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"管理学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Additionally, when libraries pay for content, that money is often going to companies that also collect personal information, aggregate data from tracking networks and sell data to law enforcement agencies. While some ways of shifting to an Open Access (OA) publication model could improve this, significant challenges remain. Currently, some of the same corporations that sell resources to libraries are also among the biggest OA service providers, and OA may also limit librarians’ position for advocacy.","PeriodicalId":54165,"journal":{"name":"Serials Review","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.9,"publicationDate":"2021-10-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"44908405","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"管理学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic has caused the format of academic conferences to shift, leading virtual conferences to become increasingly popular in the academic environment. Along the way, practical online tools used to organize a virtual academic conference have attained prominence. This study evaluates the various features that service providers currently offer, having thoroughly investigated many tools that are currently on the market. The discussion categorizes these online tools into three groups based on function: event management tools, submission management tools, and online conferencing tools. The study findings contribute to conference organizers’ ability to determine useful features for conducting a virtual academic conference. Moreover, the results reveal that the tools that support event and submission management can also benefit traditional scientific conferences, making this study valuable for those organizing all types of conferences, whether virtual or traditional.","PeriodicalId":54165,"journal":{"name":"Serials Review","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.9,"publicationDate":"2021-10-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"42883312","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"管理学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Objectives To review IF’s role and the factors that influence the IF of dental journals, including the journals’ quartile distribution. Methods The Editorial board size of the journal, age of the journal, status (print or electronic) of publication, frequency of publication, quartile, and 5-year IF of all Clarivate Analytics’ oral-dental journals (Dentistry, Oral Surgery, and Medicine) were investigated. Descriptive and inferential statistics were utilized. The information was obtained from individual websites of the journals and Web of Science databases. Results The result shows that all four variables (Editorial board size, frequency of publication, status, and age of journals) were not correlated with the IF, and there was no statistically significant difference found on the IF based on all four factors. Discussion Studies on all four factors contribute to the current IF of individual journals. Five-year and yearly progress trends of journals with quartile rankings are helping to make learning choices for journal selection. The selection of high IF dental journals is a current need for oral health care professionals from academia. Irrespective of the impact factors, publish and flourish policy may be adopted by academic institutions to promote a writing culture. Incentives should be offered to faculty of academic institutions, and adequate time should be allocated to promote publishing culture. Novice authors should be encouraged to start writing and not initially only focus on high IF journals, as with time, quality should follow. If articles are published in medical journals, the keywords should include dental/or dentistry, so it could be classified in the dental literature as well, wherever it is applicable. Conclusion There is no influence on any of the four factors. The larger Editorial board size and higher frequency of publications per year were not significantly associated with the IF. Comparison of IF with status and age of journals also showed no association with the IF. Any particular journal’s choice should be based upon the current IF, journal quartile ranking, and journal domain specificity. Further research on acceptance rate, open access, waiting time, and cost influencing journal selection is suggested.","PeriodicalId":54165,"journal":{"name":"Serials Review","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.9,"publicationDate":"2021-10-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"48704816","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"管理学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
