The goal of this study was to evaluate the occurrence patterns of an assemblage of small flightless mammals in the area of a landfill deactivated 19 years ago. During nine campaigns, three different sites located in a subtropical protected area near the city of Matinhos, Paraná coast, southern Brazil, were sampled. The selected places were an artificial clearing where urban waste had previously been dumped (Area 1), a site with less anthropic influence with tree species and a poorly developed understorey (Area 2), and a site with well-formed vegetation, with herbaceous, shrubby and tree strata well developed (Area 3). The total capture effort was 5210 trap-nights; 109 captures were made of 82 individuals from five species of Rodentia (all from the subfamily Sigmodontinae) and three species of marsupials (Order Didelphimorphia). The most conserved site (Area 3) had higher abundance than areas 1 and 2 (binomial test; P<0.05). Area 1, considered the most affected, showed less species richness (n=6) than the other two areas (7 and 8 species), although this may be affected by the lower number of captures. The diversity in Area 1, estimated by the Shannon index, was lower than in areas 2 and 3 (Hutcheson’s t tests; H’=1.26 for Area 1 vs. 1.76 and 1.68 for Areas 2 and 3, respectively), although the composition of the assemblage did not differ significantly between the areas (PERMANOVA; P=0.085). Para las poblaciones humanas de la Patagonia representa un recurso leñero no valorado económicamente en el circuito comercial forestal. La región ecotonal incluye tres provincias diferentes con distintos criterios de protección y manejo de bosques, lo cual dificulta contar con información cuantitativa y cualitativa del recurso forestal para establecer lineamientos de manejo integral. En este trabajo se buscó describir la variación estructural y composicional en un gradiente geográfico-climático (NE-SO) según una clasificación de cobertura abierta y densa, y realizar un mapa de la distribución de las clases de cobertura. Los sitios ubicados al noreste se asociaron a situaciones boscosas, con mayor frecuencia de especies arbóreas representativas del Espinal. Si bien en todo el gradiente geográfico se encontraron situaciones de cobertura densa, las situaciones densas se concentraron hacia el NE de la región y las situaciones abiertas se concentraron hacia el SO. Las situaciones densas del NE se diferenciaron significativamente de las situaciones densas del SO por presentar mayor cobertura y altura promedio de los estratos arbóreo y arbustivo. Las situaciones abiertas del NE se diferenciaron significativamente de las situaciones abiertas del SO por presentar mayores valores en cobertura arbórea y altura promedio del estrato arbustivo, mientras que la riqueza fue mayor en los sitios del SO con respecto a los sitios del NE. Nuestro objetivo fue evaluar el efecto de distintas variables de paisaje sobre el rendimiento hídrico y la tasa de recesión (tasa a la que disminuye el caudal) durante la estación seca, en cuencas de alta montaña del centro de la Argentina. Seleccionamos 33 cuencas de 9-61 ha, y durante el final de la estación seca de 2017 medimos semanalmente el caudal en sus puntos de cierre durante siete semanas consecutivas. Para cada cuenca calculamos el rendimiento hídrico (mm/mes) promedio y un índice de recesión (adimensional) como la diferencia normalizada del rendimiento entre las últimas y las primeras fechas. Los paisajes extensamente ocupados por un mosaico de pajonal y roca, con pendiente y rugosidad intermedias, tuvieron los rendimientos hídricos máximos (>5 mm/mes). Por lo contrario, el rendimiento hídrico fue más bajo tanto en los paisajes suaves y cubiertos por vegetación, como en los muy ásperos (muy rugosos, escarpados y rocosos). Por su parte, la recesión fue lenta en los paisajes más ásperos y muy abrupta en los paisajes más suaves. Posiblemente, en los paisajes suaves y vegetados se pierde mucha agua por evapotranspiración, mientras que en los paisajes muy ásperos se pierde mucha agua por escorrentía después de las lluvias. Los paisajes con aspereza intermedia y un mosaico de vegetación y roca serían los que optimizan el almacenamiento, minimizando las pérdidas por evapotranspiración. We studied the diversity, distribution and ecology of Hyalella (a genus endemic to America that lives over a wide range of geographical altitudes) in 44 peatlands of the Puna and the Altos Andes ecoregions, in the NW of Argentina, mostly placed in the provinces of Salta and Catamarca. Our aim is to deepen our understanding of the distribution and ecology of these freshwater crustaceans in both ecoregions. Field collection was made between 2013 and 2017, and ecogeographical variables were also recorded. The crustaceans were identified by dissections under a microscope. We estimated biodiversity indices and made Whi�aker curves to compare diversity between both ecoregions. We made correlations between Hyalella abundance and 11 ecogeographic variables. A principal components analysis was made to study relationships among each peatland and eco-geographical variables. A total of 6548 individuals, distributed among 4 species and 11 morphospecies, were collected. Diversity in the Puna was higher than in the Altos Andes, but was low in each individual peatland. Hyalella fatimae was the most abundant species in both ecoregions. The PCA revealed that altitude, rainfall, temperature, electrical conductivity and total dissolved solids were key variables that characterized the peatlands. The abundance of Hyalella was negatively correlated with altitude and annual mean rainfall, and positively correlated with the mean minimum temperature of the coldest month. Hyalella proved to be an important component of macroinvertebrates assemblages in these environments, capable of generating a species complex and endemism, as reported for other regions of South America. In total, 841 individuals of 24 species were collected. The most abundant species was Angiopolybia paraensis (Spinosa 1851). Community structure and composition change according to the disturbance levels, with a balanced variation of Bray-Curtis of 85.65%. The most diverse forest is the most conserved (SLR). Five species were recorded exclusively in SLR and three in PCR.
