People have been given the ability to choose between different options: one of the options for achieving self-knowledge is to understand one’s own capabilities, to gain a sense of the facets of one’s own self, and to believe in the immensity of one’s existence, which is bolstered by the modern culture of thought. However, the novelty of this state is relative, since the way in which an individual conceives of his or her identity is rooted in life experience, and it is also reinforced by how this individual comprehends the culture. The purpose of the study is to verify the data that was obtained as a result of an analysis of language and textual material as well as to clarify the specific features of how the concept of PATRIOTISM is embodied in the consciousness of modern Russian speakers. The study is based on language data obtained from an associative chain experiment (associations of the word stimulus “patriotism”) that was conducted by the author and involved a sample of 100 respondents. The methodological basis of the study consists of the theoretical foundations and principles for analyzing the “language of national culture” that have been developed by modern Russian sociolinguistics within the framework of the cognitive-oriented anthropocentric paradigm proposed by the modern humanities. The study borrows methods from modern conceptual analysis as well as methods that are used to conduct associative chain experiments. As a result, we were able to verify and clarify the current semantic content of the concept of PATRIOTISM, including 17 cognitive characteristics, within the national conceptual space. The main results of the study can be used when drafting teaching and classroom guidelines and lesson plans as well as in the practice of teaching Russian as a foreign language. They can also be applied in compiling new types of dictionaries, including dictionaries of concepts and thesauri of sociolinguistics.","PeriodicalId":53668,"journal":{"name":"Russian Education and Society","volume":"60 1","pages":"762 - 774"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-12-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/10609393.2018.1662238","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"46279559","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The goals of the study were to identify groups of universities that have similar international educational activity indicators in a number of areas (based on a cluster analysis of the data) and to analyze the characteristics of universities in each of the identified clusters (the number of enrolled international students, the size of the university, specialization, geographical location, level of selectivity of the university, number of international research and teaching faculty members, and research activities). The study results may be of interest to university administrators, since they can help them to obtain a general idea of the current state and main directions of international educational activities at Russian universities. The proposed classification of universities can provide a basis for analyzing the university’s own position on the international educational market and adjusting strategic plans for expanding and strengthening the university’s position in various segments of this market.","PeriodicalId":53668,"journal":{"name":"Russian Education and Society","volume":"60 1","pages":"643 - 664"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-09-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/10609393.2018.1598162","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"44335556","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We conducted a review of the existing literature and statistical data about Russia, which has allowed us to identify a range of possible reasons for why academic diversity is on the rise at universities and to offer a set of basic conditions for determining its level. The article first analyzes academic diversity as a contextual variable together with the organizational characteristics of the universities. We demonstrate its importance for university administration. The author also provides a range of theoretical frameworks that can be used to analyze university administration in the context of high academic diversity. A more detailed study of administrative practices at universities is needed as a follow-up to this article. The results of this study may be used to expand the existing research agenda in higher education as well as to analyze and plan measures at specific universities.","PeriodicalId":53668,"journal":{"name":"Russian Education and Society","volume":"60 1","pages":"716 - 741"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-09-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/10609393.2018.1598165","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"43316493","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

By using statistical methods, including cluster analysis, we have attempted to establish the development patterns of universities that are participating in the project from various angles. Our analysis was based on data from the Monitoring Study of the Performance of Institutions of Higher Education conducted by the Ministry of Education and Science of the Russian Federation as well as planned and actual indicators from the development road maps of the participating universities. The cluster analysis of universities was conducted at two main turning points during the project: the launch of the project in 2013 and the launch of its second phase in 2015. We have also factored in performance data from the last year available for analysis (2016). As a result, we were able to identify patterns in the financing structure of the universities participating in the 5–100 Project and patterns in their actual development while taking into account the main indicators from their development road maps. We were also able to identify four comprehensive development patterns on the basis of the results of the cluster analysis. In addition, the identified development patterns were compared with trends in how universities have been advancing through the rankings. The obtained results can be used in future studies of the performance of universities participating in the 5–100 Project and similar excellence initiatives in higher education.","PeriodicalId":53668,"journal":{"name":"Russian Education and Society","volume":"60 1","pages":"682 - 715"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-09-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/10609393.2018.1598164","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"47224361","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
