The treatments used were, as follows: absolute control; 5 L of biosolid/pot; 300 g of natural rock phosphate (NRP), and 200 grams of NPK 06-29-06. The seedlings were grown in pots in full sun, supplemented with Dystrophic Red Yellow Latosol. At 150 days after transplanting, the plants were measured, obtaining the height of the aerial part and the diameter of the stem. Then, the increment of these two variables was calculated. Subsequently, the leaves were removed to determine the leaf area (LA), separating the aerial part from the root system, and then packed in a paper bag and placed in an oven at 65ºC, for drying until reaching constant weight. After weighing this material to obtain the dry matter of the aerial part (APDM) and root (RDM). The leaves were ground to determine the foliar contents of N, P, K, Ca, and Mg. To evaluate the effect of treatments on the soil, samples were taken from the pots to determine the levels of macronutrients, organic matter, and CEC(t). It was found that the LA and APDM of plants fertilized with NPK showed significantly higher values when compared to plants cultivated in the control treatment. It is recommended to fertilize Citharexyllum myrianthum plants with 200 grams of N-P-K 06-29-06/hole or with 5 L of biosolid.","PeriodicalId":53573,"journal":{"name":"Floresta","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-07-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"41502042","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Ecological restoration is necessary to remedy this liability. The objective of the present study was to determine the effectiveness of a forest restoration planting in an area previously used as buffalo pasture, through floristic and phytosociological parameters of natural regeneration. The study area was densely populated by invasive exotic grasses (Urochloa spp.) until 2006, when, after eliminating the grasses, six native tree species were planted at 2.5 × 1.6 m spacing. A total of 73 terrestrial plant species were found, the most important being Alchornea glandulosa Poepp. & Endl. - heliophilous, which showed high abundance in all strata. The restoration methodology employed was effective in triggering natural succession in the study area, resulting, after 12 years, in floristic and structural parameters consistent with the initial stage of development of the alluvial Dense Ombrophylous Forest. It is inferred that the well-preserved landscape in the region has been determinant in providing the propagules and dispersers that made the observed species richness possible, while the planting tends to have contributed with the control of grasses and with the recovery of the forest environment, facilitating the arrival and development of these propagules. Evidence of soil degradation by use as pasture was observed, and in former buffalo bathing areas neither restoration planting nor natural regeneration developed.","PeriodicalId":53573,"journal":{"name":"Floresta","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-07-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"42027155","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In the Amazon, among the areas most affected by these changes are the forested watersheds, which involve a huge variety of ecosystem services that support human and animal well-being. Given the above, this study aims to analyse the dynamics of deforestation and changes in land use and land cover classes in the Marapanim River watershed, located in the northeast of Pará, to identify the possible consequences in the provision of ecosystem services. The methodology used in this study consists of quantifying and mapping deforestation and land use change using PRODES and MapBiomas data, identifying their impacts through estimates of loss of water-related ecosystem services and analysing the consequences of this process. The results revealed that the accumulated deforestation in the Marapanim River watershed between the years 1988 and 2019 was 1,614.72 km², about 74.84% of its area, resulting from forest conversion for pasture and urban areas in the most cases. In addition, it is concluded that this situation has had effects on water-related ecosystem services, especially regards to regulating services, affecting forest and soil moisture, evapotranspiration, carbon sequestration and temperature increase. Finally, it was found that human occupation close to head watershed areas has contributed to the pollution of its rivers, by preventing their use for human consumption.","PeriodicalId":53573,"journal":{"name":"Floresta","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-07-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"45997373","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The aim of the present study is to assess the influence of wood density and anatomy on resistance to resistographi drilling. Twenty trees of Eucalyptus grandis x Eucalyptus urophylla hybrids, at the age group of 6 years, whose chest height discs (CHD) were removed and subjected to diametrical strip drilling, were herein assessed. The critical locations of amplitude radius were selected after the visual analysis of the resistogram; it was done to remove samples for the anatomical analysis and density carried out to determine several moisture contents. Resistance to drill increased due to increased wood density. Person’s correlation between resistance to drill and basic density reached 0.67; density in hygroscopic moisture was 0.65. There was moderate correlation between fiber wall amplitude and thickness (r=0.65). Cell wall thickness, fiber length and lumen diameter were the main anatomical features contributing to higher resistance to resistograph drilling.","PeriodicalId":53573,"journal":{"name":"Floresta","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-07-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"41594484","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Defended by some and criticized by others, until today, there is still no consensus in the scientific community about the effects caused by fire on soil. This study had the objective to analyze the effect of controlled burns on soil pH, H+Al, Al3+, Na+, K+, P, O.M., Ca2+, Mg2+, and N. For this propose, two different pasture plots were burned and had the fire intensity quantified. The burned soil, and from an adjacent control plot, were collected at three different moments: immediately, one and six months after the burns. The burns presented low intensity ranging from 23,7 to 30,91 kJ m-1 s-1. Immediately after the burns the values of pH, Na+, Ca2+, K+ and P increased in the burned plots and were significantly different from the control plot. However, six months after the burns, only the amounts of K+, P and Ca2+ remained significantly larger than the controlled. Despite the values of the N and H+Al in burned and control areas were similar immediately and one month after the burns, after six months the amount of N was significantly larger in one of the burned plot, while the H+Al was significantly bigger in the control plot. The amounts of Mg2+, O.M. and Al3+did not change during the study period. The found results suggest that low-intensity controlled burns can reduce soil acidity and be effective in increasing some essential nutrients for plant development in short term.","PeriodicalId":53573,"journal":{"name":"Floresta","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-07-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"42653674","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Packages of 3 to 10 kg of charcoal were purchased, a pre-selection from more similar pieces was performed, macro and microscopic images were obtained for posterior anatomical description and material identification. Mislabeling was found in some charcoal packages, including genus, from both angiosperm and gymnosperm groups. Samples were found in decreasing frequency order, from the genera Eucalyptus/Corymbia, Ocotea/Nectandra, Acacia, Pinus, Araucaria, Alchornea, Casearia, Cedrela, Eugenia, Hieronyma, Ilex, Schinus and Zanthoxyllum. In gymnosperms, it was possible to verify growth rings distinct, with differences in cell wall thickness of tracheid and resin canals in pinus. In angiosperms, diffuse porosity was more frequent, with highlight to semiring porous in genus Cedrela . The presence of tyloses was predominant in genus Eucalyptus/Corymbia ; septate fibers were characteristics for genus Ocotea/Nectandra. Simple perforate plate and alternate intervessel pits were predominant, with exception of genus Ilex with scalariform perforation plate and opposite intervessel pits. Secretory canals were observed in genus Zanthoxyllum. The predominance of eucalyptus from planted forests was observed, but the presence of araucaria, which is on the list of endangered species, indicated the importance of better supervision and training for awareness of producers and local traders.","PeriodicalId":53573,"journal":{"name":"Floresta","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-07-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"44346575","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The study was carried out in eucalyptus plantations, where the extraction of wood with the forwarder and the loading of vehicles with the forest loader were evaluated. Three log stacking models on the edge of the stand were evaluated: control, inverted and adjacent, with variations in the alignment and distance of the logs concerning the edge of the stand. A study of the times and movements of the operations was carried out, determining the productivity (m³.h-1) and the production cost (R$.m-3) of the forestry operations. The data were compared using the Tukey test (α=5%) for parametric data and the Kruskal-Wallis test (α=5%) for non-parametric data, and the effect of different extraction distances was also verified using equations. The inverted stacking model contributed to the increase in extraction productivity, while the adjacent model in loading, with a reduction in production cost of around 22.1%. Simultaneously analyzing both wood stacking models, the standard model adopted by the forestry company was better with a 6.1% reduction in costs compared to the others. The productivity equations showed that the inverted stacking model contributed to the forwarder's higher performance at distances up to 140 m. The study showed that wood stacking models affect forestry operations and should be considered in operational planning.","PeriodicalId":53573,"journal":{"name":"Floresta","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-07-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"46730769","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Nine seed sources located in the municipalities of São João do Cariri - PB, Boa Vista - PB, and Sumé - PB were selected for this study. For the sanitary test, the treatments were composed of untreated seeds (control), chemical treatment, and thermal treatment at temperatures of 50, 60, and 70 °C immersed for 10, 20, 30, and 40 minutes. The same treatments were used in the germination test, and the percentage of germination, first count, dead seeds, seedling length, and germination speed index were evaluated. The results showed that the thermal treatments effectively reduced Fusarium sp. in the seeds. Thermotherapy did not negatively affect the physiological quality of angico seeds and led to an increase in germination percentage.","PeriodicalId":53573,"journal":{"name":"Floresta","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-07-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"46748535","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The aim of this study was to evaluate the losses caused by different defoliation levels on E. benthammii and E. dunnii plants artificially defoliated 30 days after planting, simulating Acromyrmex attacks. Four treatments were evaluated: 0: control, 1: 50%, 2: 75%, and 3, 100% defoliation. Plant height and diameter were recorded at 6, 12, 24, 36 and 72 months after planting. At six months, height and diameter of E. bentammii plants subjected to 100% defoliation differed significantly from control plants, however no significant differences in plant height and diameter were seen after 12 months. In E. dunnii , 100% defoliation resulted in significant plant mortality, and plants that survive this level of defoliation had significant losses in their development. In case of Acromyrmex attack on eucalyptus plants at 30 days after planting, it is suggested to replant E. dunnii 100% defoliated to avoid losses in the end of the forest cycle. In E. benthammii plantations, it is suggested to evaluate the vigor of the 100% defoliated seedlings, as they can recover over time. Only 100% defoliation can lead to losses in Eucalyptus plant growth. However, regionalized studies are necessary to assess the losses that intense defoliation can cause in each situation and in each plant species, as some species, such as E. benthammii, can recover along time.","PeriodicalId":53573,"journal":{"name":"Floresta","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-07-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"44120028","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In regions where these forests are available, farmers sell araucaria seeds, the pinhão nut, as a way of adding income. Non-timber forest products (NTFP) are a source of livelihood for traditional forest communities and local farmers, as well as an alternative for territorial development. To ensure the effective maintenance of forest germplasm sustainably, the collective participation of these communities, farmers, government, and society is necessary. This study analyzes the consumption of pine nuts and how this consumption can affect the conservation of araucaria forests. Free word association technique and exploratory research were performed and a questionnaire containing 18 questions. The exploratory factorial analysis showed that four factors were sufficient to measure the main characteristics that should be considered to helps in the development of a production chain that benefits communities dependent on these resources, thereby encouraging the protection of forests.
