However, this accessibility comes with risks that start at the age of 8. Hence, this Narratology explored the experiences of these Filipino children with online content risks as told by their parents. The deductive method was used to analyze the data using the Personal Experience Narrative (PEN) and the 4Cs: Classifying Online Risks Among Children as frameworks for the story structure. Based on the study's findings, all online content risks are observable, which usually happens at home. Aggressive content risks are common to all and interconnect with other risks. Parental supervision was also emphasized as a critical factor affecting these children's exposure. The findings of this study could be a basis for developing Information, Education, and Communication (IEC) materials and other related future research.","PeriodicalId":52652,"journal":{"name":"Philippine Social Science Journal","volume":"17 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-10-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"136015841","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Various sociopolitical factors include multiple layers of oppression, mental health, and unsatisfactory relationship scaffold rootlessness. The study aimed to explore the meanings of home among seven gay homeless and runaways. They were recruited through homogenous purposive and snowball sampling. It charted the track of interpretative phenomenological qualitative research and employed photovoice, a visual methodology. Participants were 18 and above self-identified gay men who had experienced youth homelessness for over a year. Framework analysis and triangulation were employed for the interpretation and validation. For the results, the cohort’s meanings of home are forming a non-normative family (nourishing emotional connection with significant non-relatives and achievement of heteronormative goal), characteristics of a home (physical qualities and experiential qualities), positive and emotional environment, emblem of achievement, and genuine parental acceptance. Findings suggest that birth-home and homelessness experiences contribute to conceptualizing and characterizing home as a physical structure and experience. Thus, diversity and inclusivity are social issues that need to be highlighted.","PeriodicalId":52652,"journal":{"name":"Philippine Social Science Journal","volume":"43 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-10-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"136252683","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The primary aim of this study was to construct the most suitable model for predicting academic success in Mathematics worldwide by investigating how self-concept, teaching quality, and the learning environment are interconnected. To achieve this, the study employed a descriptive-causal approach and utilized Structural Equation Modeling (SEM). Data were gathered from the 200 higher education students of a public community college in Davao del Norte through stratified random sampling. The results showed that the model developed for academic achievement effectively demonstrated the connection between teaching quality and the learning environment and their direct influence on academic achievement. This signifies that the extent of teaching quality and learning environment could mean higher academic achievement. Higher education institutions may consider the model in advancing the academic achievement of Mathematics in the Modern World.","PeriodicalId":52652,"journal":{"name":"Philippine Social Science Journal","volume":"46 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-10-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"136252685","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In Japan, 18.2% of English learners are from the third-age learners' group. This phenomenological study explored the lived experiences of Japanese third-age learners in learning English in Japan's Chubu region. Eight (8) Japanese third-age learners were identified as participants using a purposive sampling technique and inclusion criteria. Results demonstrated that, in essence, their experiences in learning English constituted a complex interplay of three major themes: motivations, adversities, and adaptation. Their experiences represent a profound exploration of self-discovery, intellectual engagement, and the pursuit of meaningful relationships in a globalized society. This linguistic journey highlights the human spirit's ongoing capacity for growth and adaptation, reinforcing the significance of language as a bridge to new horizons and enriching experiences. This study offers valuable insights for Japanese geragogy and other countries with increasing third-age learners, potentially benefiting third-age educators, policymakers, and curriculum designers.","PeriodicalId":52652,"journal":{"name":"Philippine Social Science Journal","volume":"56 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-10-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"136252684","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The study’s purpose is to determine the various influencing factors affecting the rice production of small-scale farmers in Albuera, Leyte, Philippines. Using Slovin’s formula, a total of 73 rice farmers were randomly selected as respondents to the survey. Some descriptive techniques were employed to summarize the different variables. A categorical relationship analysis using a Chi-square test was used to analyze the significant factors of rice production. Results showed that about 57.53% and 42.47% of the farmers are experiencing low and high production levels, respectively. On average, rice farmers are \"moderately affected\" (M=23.00, SD=4.55) by the different constraints in the rice production process from planting to harvesting. In addition, farmers are  \"uncertain\" (M=19.67, SD=3.01) about the effectiveness and usefulness of extension agents' role in their production process. Moreover, it is revealed that the demographic profile, constraints in rice farming, and extension agents' role does not affect the farmers' rice production level. On the other hand, other sources of income (p=0.034), monthly income in farming (p=0.13), and farm size (p<0.001) are the only significant determinants in the rice production level. Hence, the study suggested that rural farmers must be supported by the government concerning their agricultural inputs, capital, and equipment, among others. Furthermore, the local government must train their extension agents rigorously to appropriately disseminate the new technologies to farmers so that they can adopt them systematically to improve their level of rice production. ","PeriodicalId":52652,"journal":{"name":"Philippine Social Science Journal","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-05-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"42096643","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This study employed a descriptive-quantitative design and collected data using an online survey and data mining. Results from one private-sectarian HEI show that general academic performance – specifically in Theories of Personality, Abnormal Psychology, Industrial Psychology, and Dynamic Psychology courses – were significant predictors of BLEP performance, suggesting that better undergraduate academic performance leads to better BLEP performance. These results highlight the need for enhancing the curriculum and instruction in response to the demands of various regulatory and quality assurance bodies in ensuring that the mandate of HEIs to produce high-quality professionals is achieved through a curriculum-based course audit for review classes and intensified instruction.","PeriodicalId":52652,"journal":{"name":"Philippine Social Science Journal","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-05-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"42875963","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This study aimed to explore the concept of hope and aspirations of Children in Conflict with the Law (CICL). There were 10 CICLs of the Regional Rehabilitation Center for Youth (RRCY) in Urayong, Bauang, La Union, who participated in the study. A semi-structured interview was used to gather data. Thematic analysis was also employed to analyze the data gathered. Based on the findings of the study, the CICL's concept of hope includes positivity despite adversity, drawing strength from God, and having a positive social support system. Likewise, for CICLs aspirations, two themes were generated: future career and occupational fulfillment; and reform and acceptance. With this, the findings emphasized that despite being stigmatized by society, CICLs are still hopeful about life and aspire to become better individuals.","PeriodicalId":52652,"journal":{"name":"Philippine Social Science Journal","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-05-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"47341560","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This study investigated the relationship between the level of acquired basic and integrated Science Process Skills (SPS) and academic performance in Earth Science of Senior High School STEM students. Through descriptive and inferential analyses, the result showed no significant relationship between acquired integrated science process skills and academic performance in Earth Science. However, a significant relationship between acquired basic science process skills and academic performance in Earth Science was yielded. The findings revealed that students must first develop a strong foundation in basic science process skills to develop more advanced science process skills. Hence, the task cards, as supplementary instructional materials, may provide students with a structure to focus their search and strengthen their independent learning skills.","PeriodicalId":52652,"journal":{"name":"Philippine Social Science Journal","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-05-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"43892350","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The study employed the Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) research method to gather and analyze participant data. The study results reveal that SPED teachers experience physical and mental demands, excessive responsibilities, and obstacles that hinder their self-fulfillment, leading to harsh and challenging circumstances. Nevertheless, these individuals demonstrate spiritual and social resilience through adaptive coping mechanisms, including effective time management, prioritizing quality time with loved ones, and engaging in religious practices. This research provides valuable insights into the unique challenges that SPED teachers in the sandwich generation encounter and suggest strategies for supporting them in their personal and professional lives. These findings are significant for policymakers, educators, and practitioners in special education, as they shed light on the need for targeted support systems that address the complex demands of this population.","PeriodicalId":52652,"journal":{"name":"Philippine Social Science Journal","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-05-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"43449813","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
