Therefore, assessing students' thinking skills and interests is necessary to determine their inclination toward the discipline. Based on Cognitive Development Theory, this study aimed to assess the level of thinking skills and learning interests and their correlative relationship. A descriptive-correlational approach was used, and validated and reliability-tested questionnaires were administered to 294 junior high school students in a public school in Bacolod City, Philippines. The mean, standard deviation, and Spearman rank correlation were used for data analysis. Students displayed average thinking skills and a high level of learning interest. Additionally, no significant correlation was found between students' thinking skills and their interest in learning world history. This invalidated the anchored theory. Hence, continuous improvements in employing strategies are recommended to public school teachers to boost students' critical thinking abilities and engagement in the subject.","PeriodicalId":52652,"journal":{"name":"Philippine Social Science Journal","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-02-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139807750","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The study adopted a cross-sectional survey design using accidental sampling to sample 200 adolescents for data collection using validated scales. Data collected were analyzed using multiple regression and t-tests of independent samples. The results showed that parental perception of child behavior and parental abuse jointly predicted delinquent behavior among adolescents. Also, parental abuse independently predicted delinquent behavior while parental perception of child behavior did not. Finally, male adolescents scored higher on the delinquent behavior scale than female adolescents. The study concluded that parental perception and parental abuse are strong predictors of delinquent behavior among adolescents in a military cantonment. Therefore, it is recommended that parents should discourage negative behavior such as shouting and beating and encourage positive behavior such as positive relationships and encouragement to their children.","PeriodicalId":52652,"journal":{"name":"Philippine Social Science Journal","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-02-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139808212","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, only a few studies have been conducted to understand the online help-seeking behaviors of middle adolescent students whose mothers work abroad. Thus, the study aimed to uncover the nature of online help-seeking behaviors and explore the facilitators and barriers to these behaviors. Ten (10) middle adolescent students were interviewed, and their experiences revealed several key themes using the phenomenological method. The findings revealed that the online help-seeking behaviors of left-behind adolescents include the availability of a helper, reaching out, self-reliance, and coping strategies. Additionally, facilitating factors include convenience and safe space, and hindering factors consist of the unavailability of helpers and negative perceptions toward help sources. The results highlighted the importance of leveraging informal support networks, seeking professional help, and maintaining communication with migrant mothers among middle adolescents.","PeriodicalId":52652,"journal":{"name":"Philippine Social Science Journal","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-02-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139867610","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Hence, this paper aimed to assess the causal relationship of resilience to subjective wellbeing and psychological distress as mediated by mindfulness and coping. Using a non-experimental mediation design, 365 college students recruited through stratified random sampling were administered with online self-report measures measuring resilience, subjective wellbeing, psychological distress, mindfulness, and coping. Parallel mediation analysis was used to analyze the data. Results revealed that mindfulness, adaptive, and maladaptive coping partially mediated the predictive association of resilience to wellbeing. Moreover, mindfulness and maladaptive coping partially mediated the predictive association of resilience to psychological distress. These findings provide a practical framework for outcome-based resilience intervention programs where interventionists would heavily emphasize enhancing resilience, mindfulness, and adaptive coping to achieve good mental health outcomes.","PeriodicalId":52652,"journal":{"name":"Philippine Social Science Journal","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-02-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139810935","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The article aims to document the resilience level of micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) in the Pacific towns of Southern Leyte, Philippines, and capture its causal determinants amid the health crisis using descriptive correlational research design. Using a research-made questionnaire, cross-sectional and primary data were collected from a random sample of MSMEs and were summarized using statistical measures. The significant determinants of the resilience of MSMEs were determined using the Chi-square test for independence via cross-tabulation of categorical data. Results depicted that, on average, MSMEs during the pandemic are \"resilient\", particularly in their situational awareness, keystone vulnerabilities, and adaptive capacity as they combat the disruption of the health crisis. The Chi-square test reveals that age, civil status, business job position of the MSMEs' personnel, and the estimated monthly income of the enterprise are the highly significant factors that affect the resilience of MSMEs during the health crisis. In particular, younger age, single status, and owner of the enterprise are more active and creative in digital business technology, which increases their resilience in response to challenges brought about by the pandemic. Moreover, enterprises with lower incomes do adopt innovative business strategies that improve economic resilience and profit. Furthermore, the study suggests that enterprises must consider strategic plans and goals to enhance their capability in risk management as they will face future crises.","PeriodicalId":52652,"journal":{"name":"Philippine Social Science Journal","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-02-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139811055","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Data that were generated were analyzed both quantitatively and qualitatively. Artivism was used as one of the creative engagement activities in teaching art appreciation and contemporary issues. The outputs were graded. The perfect score was 20, the lowest score was 17. Descriptive statistical techniques were employed. The frequencies were used to determine the student’s critical ability. The correlation between students' social transformation engagement and art critical ability scores was determined using the Pearson Correlation Coefficient set at alpha .05. Results showed that students' critical ability was 'very high' as an entire group and when grouped according to sex. No significant differences were noted in the student's critical ability and artivism engagement. Analysis, interpretation, and judgment of student’s critical ability in artivism engagement are significantly related. The study contributes to the field of general education by expanding the existing knowledge base.","PeriodicalId":52652,"journal":{"name":"Philippine Social Science Journal","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-10-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135918583","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This paper investigates the mediating role of epistemological beliefs about physical science (EBAPS) on the effect of Physics self-efficacy (PSE) on academic performance in Physics (APP) of 456 grade 12 senior high school students enrolled in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) track. A correlational research design was used to analyze, interpret, and propose a statistical model predicting the APP based on the empirical data gathered. The adapted research instruments obtained an excellent reliability index, encoded in a web-based program, and distributed through online platforms. Mediation analysis using PROCESS v3.5 was used to examine the mediating role of EBAPS between PSE and APP. Findings revealed that EBAPS significantly mediated the association between PSE and APP. This indicates that their self-efficacy beliefs can enhance their epistemological beliefs, eventually translating to higher academic performance.","PeriodicalId":52652,"journal":{"name":"Philippine Social Science Journal","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-10-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135858289","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
