Rather than providing conclusive solutions, this study follows an exploratory approach to establish relevant grounds for tourist clusters regarding their potential receptivity to ecogamification, an area that is still under explored. This study follows a segmentation approach, using a self-administered online questionnaire. The data, stemming from 572 adult respondents who have travelled to urban destinations in the past 3 years, were analysed through a combination of non-hierarchical and hierarchical cluster analyses. The results reveal four clusters of urban tourists with different types of potential receptivity to ecogamification: “Mobi Wholeheartedly”; “Mobi Whatever”; “Mobi Profiter”; and “Mobi Utilitarian”. This study adds to current research by adopting new segmentation approaches and more open assumptions concerning the potential receptivity to (eco)gamification. It also provides fresh evidence regarding tourist receptivity typologies and the existence of differences (and overlaps) among these types of tourists. It explores how that receptivity might occur based on the intersection between technology, entertainment and the environment. It examines the implications of tourist segments in ecogamification strategies, providing overall useful insights to destination management organizations, destination marketers and game designers.","PeriodicalId":51784,"journal":{"name":"European Journal of Tourism Research","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":2.3,"publicationDate":"2024-04-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140711723","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Using the counterfactual synthetic control method, the causal effect of EU membership on overnight tourists in Croatia in the period from 2013 to 2021 is estimated. The results suggest there is a large, positive, and long-term effect of the EU joining on overnight visitors in Croatia, with European tourists being the main contributors to tourism growth. In the period before COVID-19, the maximum discrepancy between the observed number of tourists and the synthetic value was achieved in 2017, with Croatia receiving an additional 3 million visitors, or 23 percent more than the value of the synthetic. Although these results are context-specific, the resemblance of Croatia to some EU candidate countries provides insights into possible tourism outcomes of integration in Europe.","PeriodicalId":51784,"journal":{"name":"European Journal of Tourism Research","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":2.3,"publicationDate":"2024-04-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140710477","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This study aims to develop predictive models of participant satisfaction in DITE based on their underlying motivations. Based on Principal Component Analysis, we were able to identify five motivational components: \"dark intensity\", \"survival\", \"immersion”, \"theatre\", and \"unwinding\", which explained 66.7% of the motivation’s variation. Furthermore, we performed multiple linear regression models to predict participants’ overall satisfaction in DITE. The final predictive models allowed to explain 66.0% of satisfaction’s variance, composed by six independent variables: \"novel experience\", \"captivating plot\", \"push limits\", \"to have fun\", \"coparticipation\", and \"hyper-realistic experience\". Our work contributes for optimizing DITE by presenting specific factors that allow to enhance satisfaction. Our data provide DITE managers useful information to improve and optimize experiences in such a way that enhances participant’s satisfaction and further increase their interest to such experiences.","PeriodicalId":51784,"journal":{"name":"European Journal of Tourism Research","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":2.3,"publicationDate":"2024-04-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140710098","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The elements of festival experiences were analysed through social media opinions of Sziget Festival attendees published between 1 January 2014 and 31 July 2022, using structural topic model (STM) computer algorithm and latent Dirichlet allocation (LDA). Our findings support existing literature, showing that festival experiences are cognitive-affective in nature with key elements of socialisation, environment, and festival value, some of which are inter-connected. Although this kind of research is rare in tourism, our paper argues for its usefulness and provides an example of application, using consumer data to facilitate decision-making and support the festival industry. The paper concludes with recommendations for future research, as well as incorporating LDA with other qualitative and quantitative research.","PeriodicalId":51784,"journal":{"name":"European Journal of Tourism Research","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":2.3,"publicationDate":"2024-04-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140712430","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, previous research has not considered whether the market concentration effect on prices is moderated by seasonality in markets where firms switch from peak demand to low demand periods. This study analyzes market concentration effect on prices and price variability in the hotel industry. Through hedonic price models, the paper analyzes the influence of market concentration on hotel prices and how quality, distance to the city center or seasonality influence hotel prices. A higher market concentration is associated with higher prices. The effect of market concentration on prices is 1.7 times higher in the peak demand season than in the low demand season. Price variability between hotels for a given day in a particular market is partially explained by differences in service quality among hotels in the same city but also by the level of market concentration. We find that higher market concentration reduces price variability, a result consistent with the existence of tacit collusion.","PeriodicalId":51784,"journal":{"name":"European Journal of Tourism Research","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":2.3,"publicationDate":"2024-04-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140710524","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A semi-systematic literature review was conducted of 98 publications from 2017 to the first quarter of 2023, indexed in the Web of Science database. This is followed by an in-depth analysis of the most recent papers (2022 to March 2023). The research focuses on the improvement of processes, their interaction with other technologies and adaptation to the environment. However, the studies show the need for further study on social and legal aspects. In addition, blockchain technology could be an enabling tool in the face of new sustainability paradigms or crisis environments. Finally, considering new lines of research, five dimensions were identified (social, organisational, technological, sustainable and economic) as well as the need to develop a regulatory framework and interaction with other technologies.","PeriodicalId":51784,"journal":{"name":"European Journal of Tourism Research","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":2.3,"publicationDate":"2024-04-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140712061","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A qualitative and exploratory approach was used, considering two data collection methods: semi-structured interviews and in situ focus groups. This empirical study was conducted in the Algarve region, a southern Portugal's sea and sun destination. The data was compiled and analyzed through a thematic content with QSR NVivo 12. The findings suggest that managers should explore and understand tangible, intangible (or immaterial) elements that influence visitors' experiences, attitudes, and behaviours toward the physical environment. In this sense, managers must converge efforts to highlight the sensory cues intrinsic to each site. Furthermore, considering the scarce research addressing sensory experiences in heritage contexts, this study contributes to the literature by exploring the role of the sensory dimension of experiencing a monument that is one of the main attractions in a seasonal mass tourism destination. A framework is presented, which can help managers to design sensory experiences in a built heritage context and assist researchers in future studies. In addition to that, this research also provides some practical implications for management and depicts several leads to future research.","PeriodicalId":51784,"journal":{"name":"European Journal of Tourism Research","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135272433","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
