We present the effect of a cost-effective rapid-casting route on modifying the microstructure. The non-equilibrium phase transformation events are tracked and the evolution sequences of metastable phases in the microstructure are elucidated. The metastable phase transformation of the precipitates from DO19- to L12-ordered structure and its role in enhancing thermal conductivity are presented. A density functional theory (DFT)-based calculation also complements the experimental evidence of the relative stability of the evolved metastable phases. One of the key findings is the evolution of L12-ordered precipitates via face centred cubic (FCC)-based interfacial matrix template.","PeriodicalId":516293,"journal":{"name":"Materials Science and Technology","volume":"88 6","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-01-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139535638","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A popular way of improving such behaviours is the mechanical treatment of the surface. The current investigation studied the improvement of scratch and wear properties by performing shot peening on the Ti–Nb stabilised interstitial free steel, a popular choice in automotive industries. The samples were shot-peened at different coverages. It was found that the shot-peened samples showed a superior scratch and wear behaviour as compared to as-received samples. The scratch hardness was improved by 2.4 times, the wear volume was decreased by 59.6%, and the wear rate was minimal for the 2000% peened sample.","PeriodicalId":516293,"journal":{"name":"Materials Science and Technology","volume":"43 5","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-01-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139535216","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A niobium nitride coating is deposited on steel by cathodic cage plasma deposition (CCPD) to upgrade the surface properties. The X-ray diffraction shows that the coating has a tetragonal Nb4N5 structure in each condition. The nano-hardness of the untreated sample (2.5 GPa) is increased up to 15.5 and 18.7 GPa at 400°C and 450°C, respectively. A ball-on-disc wear tester is applied for wear analysis, and the wear rate is found to be reduced up to six times by coating. This study shows that the CCPD can be used successfully for depositing niobium nitride coating with outstanding mechanical and tribological properties of AISI-420 steel.","PeriodicalId":516293,"journal":{"name":"Materials Science and Technology","volume":"31 4","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-01-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139535331","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Based on the quenching-tempering (Q-T) process, the samples were heated to 650, 700, 750 and 800 °C and then quenched and tempered at 200 °C. The microstructure evolution and impact toughness of the tested steel were studied by X-ray diffraction, OM, SEM, TEM and EPMA. The microstructure is mainly composed of δ-ferrite, tempered martensite and retained austenite. The partition of carbon and manganese elements affected the stability of austenite in the steels, resulting in the reduction of the TRIP effect. The lamellar structure was beneficial to the strength and the cryogenic impact toughness of the steel and improved the plastic deformation ability during deformation.","PeriodicalId":516293,"journal":{"name":"Materials Science and Technology","volume":"54 9","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-01-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139535773","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It has wide-ranging applications in energy storage, electronics, optoelectronics and high-performance sensing materials. Synthesis methods fall into top-down (chemical, mechanical and liquid-phase exfoliation) and bottom-up (physical vapour deposition, chemical layer deposition, atomic layer deposition and solvothermal/hydrothermal) categories. Choosing the right synthesis method is pivotal as it significantly impacts the material's properties and application potential. 2D MoS2, owing to its natural abundance, adaptability, adjustable bandgap and high surface-to-volume ratio, finds utility in various domains like energy storage, catalysis, composite and sensors. This review delves into recent progress, challenges and future prospects in 2D MoS2 synthesis and applications.","PeriodicalId":516293,"journal":{"name":"Materials Science and Technology","volume":"80 2","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-01-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139535395","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this study, the optimal processing parameters for laser remelting and the influences of laser remelting on porosity, microcracks, surface roughness, microhardness and mechanical properties of the AISI 4140 steel manufactured by laser-powder bed fusion were investigated. The results showed that laser remelting improved the relative density to 99.6% and defects in the microstructure changed from lack of fusion to keyhole morphology as the number of remelting steps increased. The roughness on the upper surface was reduced by 73% after remelting, but the roughness on the lateral surfaces deteriorated by 4.5% when remelting twice. Specimens built in the transverse orientation and treated with a single remelting step exhibit the highest tensile strength (1277 MPa). Furthermore, there is a slight improvement in the fatigue limit after remelting once. However, laser remelting in the manufacturing process did not eliminate microcracks.","PeriodicalId":516293,"journal":{"name":"Materials Science and Technology","volume":"8 2","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-01-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139535415","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It was found that the suspended dross was composed of Al–Fe–Si–Zn intermetallic compounds (IMCs), mixtures of Fe2Al5Zn0.4 and Alx–Fe3–Siy with various Al and Si contents. The density of suspended dross was small compared with the molten hot-dip ZA liquid. After being quenched in water, the morphology of the suspended dross was confirmed as polygonal granular structures. Thermodynamics was applied to explain why there were various morphological structures of the suspended dross in the solidified hot-dip ZA melt. This research had also demonstrated that it was technically feasible to separate the suspended dross from the molten hot-dip ZA melt in a supergravity field.","PeriodicalId":516293,"journal":{"name":"Materials Science and Technology","volume":"56 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-01-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139535763","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
