The results are compared with calculations based on the constrained carbon equilibrium theory, paying special attention to the presence of reactions competing for the carbon available for partitioning and to the effect of alloying element segregation. Results show that chromium carbides must be considered when accounting for the carbon available for austenite stabilisation. Moreover, manganese/chromium segregation bands play an important role in the microstructure development, particularly in martensite formation, with important consequences in the microstructure development during the following processing steps.","PeriodicalId":516293,"journal":{"name":"Materials Science and Technology","volume":"53 2","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-01-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139458468","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The results indicated that few-pass rolling with large deformation is a better strategy to prepare AZ31 Mg sheets with higher deformation restored energy and less rolling defects. After annealing, the static recrystallisation occurred and the recrystallisation degree increases with the annealing temperature and time. Finally, the best comprehensive mechanical properties were obtained by 3-pass rolling with large deformation and annealing at 200 °C for 150 s and the corresponding YS, UTS and TEF of the AZ31 sheet were 225 MPa, 305 MPa and 32%, respectively. The improvement in the microstructure and mechanical properties can be attributed to an optimised static recrystallisation at a relatively low temperatures and in a short time.","PeriodicalId":516293,"journal":{"name":"Materials Science and Technology","volume":"18 12","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-01-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139458470","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The study reveals that, with increasing annealing temperature, the prior-coldworked alloy shows non-monotonic M-Type variation with double peak-hardening at 0.3 Tm and 0.6 Tm. The study discovers that the first peak is due to the ‘static–strain–aging phenomenon’ that precedes recovery-softening. The second peak-hardening is due to precipitation-hardening, following which, the alloy softens due to recrystallisation. Supported by SEM, electron back-scattered diffraction and X-Ray diffraction results, the investigation suggests that the precipitation of fine rod-shaped δ-phase creates numerous nucleation sites at the shear bands that cause recrystallisation-burst at 0.75 Tm. However, above 0.75 Tm absence of the δ-phase activates grain-boundary migration resulting in rapid grain-coarsening.","PeriodicalId":516293,"journal":{"name":"Materials Science and Technology","volume":"41 4","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-01-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139535305","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Laser surface texturing technology was employed to fabricate micro-grooves on the substrate surfaces. Suspension high velocity oxy fuel thermal spraying technique was used to deposit 99 wt-% alumina + 1 wt-% graphene nanoplatelets (GNPs) coating on the substrate surface with micro-grooves. Characterisations such as micromorphology, composition analysis and tribological performance were examined. Results showed that the morphology of the laser prepared micro-groove consisted of two hills and one valley. The grid-textured samples sprayed with alumina/GNPs coating showed the lowest coefficient of friction and wear rate, which was benefited from the larger texture density and the friction reduction of GNPs lubrication film.","PeriodicalId":516293,"journal":{"name":"Materials Science and Technology","volume":"95 6","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-01-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139535428","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Good resistance to sulfide stress cracking (SSC) is required for the pressure vessel steel, but the SSC behavior of the Q345 has received little attention. This work investigated the SSC behavior of the Q345 in a wet H2S environment. The microstructure contained the irregular various-sized polygonal-like ferrite grains plus a carbon-rich degenerate pearlite banded structure. The Q345 had high ductility but failed to pass the SSC tests. The SSC cracking involved hydrogen embrittlement. The SSC preferentially occurred at the carbon-rich degenerate pearlite banded structure. The elimination of the carbon-rich degenerate pearlite banded structure is necessary to improve the SSC resistance of the Q345 pressure vessel steel.","PeriodicalId":516293,"journal":{"name":"Materials Science and Technology","volume":"85 10","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-01-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139535457","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Since the mechanical properties depend on the microstructure, the wear resistance of components manufactured by laser powder bed fusion (LPBF) is determined by the processing parameters. This work focuses on microhardness and sliding wear of 316L stainless steel, evaluated nanoindentation and pin-on-disc, respectively, analysed through optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and glow discharge emission spectrometry (GDOES). The results show that the LPBF-processed specimens have about 40% higher microhardness and ca. 30% lower wear rate than the wrought counterpart. The enhanced sliding wear resistance is associated with the higher density of dislocations at the cellular subgrain boundaries.","PeriodicalId":516293,"journal":{"name":"Materials Science and Technology","volume":"49 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-01-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139535134","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The findings demonstrate that the inclusion of alloying elements in the multiphase alloys significantly enhances their microstructural, mechanical and corrosional properties. Compared to pure Mg samples fabricated using the same method, the multiphase alloys produced by this technique exhibit finer grain structures. Mechanical analysis indicates that these multiphase alloys possess higher yield and ultimate strength compared to pure magnesium. Corrosion testing reveals that all produced alloys outperform pure magnesium in various aspects. Particularly, Mg–1Zn and Mg–1Mn alloys exhibit exceptional corrosion resistance in immersion, mass loss and polarisation tests.","PeriodicalId":516293,"journal":{"name":"Materials Science and Technology","volume":"17 2","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-01-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139535372","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Boron carbide (B4C) was added to the titanium melts using vacuum induction melting, resulting in an in-situ reaction, 5Ti + B4C = 4TiB + TiC, that produced 5, 10 and 20 vol.-% (TiB + TiC) reinforcements. The results showed that the size and distribution of the in-situ reinforcements varied with the B4C size and content. Additionally, the presence of carbon element in graphite crucible affected the crystallisation sequence of TiB and TiC, leading to different morphologies and sizes.
