It was found that yttrium addition could effectively control the distribution and volume fraction of B2-CuZr precipitated phase in the composites by adjusting the glass-forming ability of the alloys, and suppress the eutectoid decomposition of B2-CuZr.Within 2 at.% yttrium addition, the volume fraction of B2-CuZr precipitation in the glassy matrix decreases significantly with the increase of yttrium content. For more than 2 at.% yttrium addition, the volume fraction of B2-CuZr precipitation increases as yttrium content increases. An optimal amount of yttrium (2–3 at.%) enhances glass-forming ability of the alloy, reduces B2-CuZr precipitation, and obviously improves the agglomeration and distribution uniformity of B2-CuZr in the amorphous matrix. The compressive properties of BMG composites with more than 1 at.% yttrium addition drop considerably, which should be mainly attributed to the abundant and various forms of Y2O3 brittle phase formed in the glassy matrix.","PeriodicalId":516293,"journal":{"name":"Materials Science and Technology","volume":"76 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-03-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140232536","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The results indicated the formation of a homogeneous three-dimensional porous morphology with a density of 3 ± 0.3 g/cm3. The XRD analysis shows that the porous titanium–zirconium alloy is a single-phase hcp solid solution. The unique porous scaffold can be introduced as a promising candidate for dental implants owing to bone-like elastic modulus of 3.5 GPa and compressive strength of 550 MPa. The Ashby-type diagram confirms the achievement of new biomaterial with a good combination of high strength and low stiffness.","PeriodicalId":516293,"journal":{"name":"Materials Science and Technology","volume":"37 7","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-03-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140234358","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It was found that the addition of TiB2 at powder feed rates of range 0.1–0.3 rpm resulted in the formation of TiB whiskers with columnar and equiaxed network morphologies, in a lamella α + β matrix. By increasing TiB2 at 0.4–0.5 rpm, a complete dissolution of the equiaxed and columnar network morphologies were achieved. The dissolution led to a random distribution of formed TiB whiskers, resulting in enhanced hardness and ultimate tensile strength (UTS), with the 0.5 rpm giving the highest hardness and UTS values of 511 ± 13 HV and 1745 MPa, respectively.","PeriodicalId":516293,"journal":{"name":"Materials Science and Technology","volume":"9 3","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-03-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140238904","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Results show that after LSP, the carbides on the surface of steel are broken and micro-pits appear. After removing the surface carbide damage by electrolytic polishing, the number of sub-surface carbides increases, and the maximum content is 26.1%. After LSP, the wear resistance of the steel is improved because LSP causes a large residual compressive stress on the surface. The wear performance of the sample after removing the surface damage becomes better, which is related to the elimination of many crack sources and the larger residual compressive stress.","PeriodicalId":516293,"journal":{"name":"Materials Science and Technology","volume":"34 10","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-03-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140242084","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The experimental results demonstrated that the deformation of the alloy mainly depended on slip and [Formula: see text] tension twinning. With the increase of deformation, the [Formula: see text] tension twins nucleated continuously, and there were stretching twin variants that were 60° away from the original stretching twins. In addition, compared with the conventional orientation (extrusion direction), 45° samples were easier to activate various slips under high-strain rate deformation conditions, especially ⟨c + a⟩ slips.","PeriodicalId":516293,"journal":{"name":"Materials Science and Technology","volume":"36 2","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-03-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140245009","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Here, we developed a strong, ductile and cost-effective duplex MEA with a chemical composition of Fe45Cr25Ni10Mn15Al4C1 (at.%) in hot-rolled state and explored the potential of strengthening this MEA by forming hard σ phase via tempering within the temperature range of 400–900°C. Severe embrittlement is observed when the MEA is tempered at between 700°C and 800°C. Microstructural characterisation reveals that σ phase with a lamellar morphology is formed via a diffusion-controlled process. The severe embrittlement results from the intrinsic brittleness of σ phase and the lamellar morphology that provides continuous paths for crack propagation.","PeriodicalId":516293,"journal":{"name":"Materials Science and Technology","volume":"4 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-03-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140245831","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Its impact on the corrosion and hydrogen permeation behaviour of X80 pipeline steel in a CO2 environment is thoroughly investigated. The findings reveal that the corrosion resistance and hydrogen atom diffusion of X80 pipeline steel exhibit an initial decline, followed by an increase with escalating inhibitor concentration. The nadir values are recorded at an inhibitor concentration of 500 mg·L−1, attaining a remarkable maximum inhibition efficiency of 97%. Following the addition of corrosion inhibitors, the formation of corrosion products notably decreases, indicating a positive inhibition effect on both corrosion and hydrogen permeation. Additionally, a correlation is successfully established between hydrogen permeation parameters and inhibitor concentration.","PeriodicalId":516293,"journal":{"name":"Materials Science and Technology","volume":"113 13","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-03-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140250676","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Measurements of microhardness and nanohardness analysed the hardening behaviour during stage IV as a function of time, temperature, and heating rate. Scanning electron microscopy and scanning probe evidenced the carbides precipitated during stage IV. It was observed that hardening is a function of not only tempering temperature and time but also of the heating rate according to the Hollomon–Jaffe parameter. The parameter increases as the heating rate increases due to the effect on the temperature, showing a clear softening. The hardening behaviour, evaluated with the Hollomon–Jaffe parameter, was very similar regardless of the test, micro- or nanoindentation.","PeriodicalId":516293,"journal":{"name":"Materials Science and Technology","volume":"93 7","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-03-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140249472","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The matrix alloy is AZ91 Mg alloy which primarily consists of 9 wt-% Al and 1 wt-% Zn. A mechanical-induction stir casting process was used to add CNTs to the composite. XRD patterns and EDX analysis showed that all composites have a microstructure of α-Mg, Mg17Al12, SiC and B4C. The outcomes demonstrated that the Mg17Al12 networks can be significantly thinned by the additional CNTs. The hot extrusion also dispersed the B4C and SiC particles in the structure, improving the particle-stimulated nucleation (PSN) plus twinning mechanism, but the presence of micron particles caused stress concentration, which did not affect the composites’ strength and elongation. The wear behaviour of the as-cast and extruded composites was studied by applying 5, 10 and 20 N forces at room temperature. The results showed that the mass loss and the coefficient of friction values are decreased with the addition of CNTs, which is attributed to the increased microhardness and self-lubricating properties of the CNTs.","PeriodicalId":516293,"journal":{"name":"Materials Science and Technology","volume":"19 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-03-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140248989","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The microstructural observations were then performed to assess grain growth and formation of cavities. The apparent activation energy was defined in a range of 154–166 kJ/mole. It was found that at higher normalised stress region ([Formula: see text]), the stress exponent was about 7 and at lower stresses it decreased to about 5. Microstructural instability, that is, grain growth, was detected during creep at a temperature of 300°C or higher. This phenomenon affected the strain rate and the governing mechanisms.
