By using the primitive variables of velocity and pressure, the Navier-Stokes and mass conservation equations are solved by a semi-implicit finite difference projection method. A new bounded higher order upwind convection scheme is employed to deal with the non-linear (advective) terms. The procedure is an adaptation of the GENSMAC (J. Comput. Phys. 1994; 110:171-186) methodology for calculating confined and free surface fluid flows at both low and high Reynolds numbers. The calculations were performed by using the 2D version of the Freeflow simulation system (J. Comp. Visual. Science 2000; 2:199-210). In order to demonstrate the capabilities of the numerical method, various test cases are presented. These are the fully developed flow in a channel, the flow over a backward facing step, the die-swell problem, the broken dam flow, and an impinging jet onto a flat plate. The numerical results compare favourably with the experimental data and the analytical solutions.","PeriodicalId":51245,"journal":{"name":"Communications in Numerical Methods in Engineering","volume":"23 1","pages":"419-445"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2006-08-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1002/CNM.900","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"51600198","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

These methods tend to generate strongly coupled systems that is dependent on the discretization characteristics on each side of the contact zone. In this work a displacement frame is intercalated between the interface meshes. The frame is then discretized so that the discrete frame nodes are connected to the contacting substructures using the localized Lagrange multipliers collocated at the interface nodes. The resulting methodology alleviates the need for master–slave book-keeping and provides a partitioned formulation which preserves software modularity, facilitates non-matching mesh treatment and passes the contact patch test. Frictional contact problems are used to demonstrate the salient features of the proposed method. A preconditioned conjugate-gradient approach is developed. The preconditioner is constructed, and the implementation of the approach involves only decomposition of the stiffness matrix corresponding to the newly added degrees of freedom. In particular, the approach can adaptively monitor the accuracy of approximate solutions. The approach is applicable to the reanalysis of the structural layout modifications for the case of addition of some nodes, deletion and addition of elements and further changes in the geometry as well as to the local mesh refinements. Numerical examples show that the condition number of the selected preconditioned matrix is largely reduced. Therefore, the fast convergence and accurate results can be achieved by the approach. Algorithmically, it is seen that traditional return mapping algorithmic strategies for treatment of the friction are often ineffective for this problem even when well-posed frictional solutions exist; accordingly, an algorithmic approach utilizing a global stick predictor is proposed to recover solutions to the sliding contact problem. Numerical examples for adherent and sliding contact cases are presented, to demonstrate the effectiveness of the approach advocated. The first set can be applied to those problems having any number of independent and dependent variables. This set of the Hamiltonian can effectively indicate the errors of approximated solutions when requiring a high accuracy. The second set of the Hamiltonian has the invariant property when the Lagrangian is not an explicit function of time, even for non-conservative systems. Both sets can be formulated as error indicators to check errors of approximated solutions. Three illustrative examples demonstrate the error analyses of finite element solutions. An external uniform magnetic field is applied perpendicular to the plates and the fluid motion is subjected to a pressure gradient in the axial direction. The lower plate is stationary and the upper plate is suddenly set into motion and simultaneously suddenly isothermally heated to a temperature other than the lower plate temperature. Numerical solutions are obtained for the governing momentum and energy equations taking the Joule and viscous dissipations into consideration. The effect of the Hall term and the parameter describing the non-Newtonian behaviour on both the velocity and temperature distributions are studied. The contents include the formulation of the geometry mapping induced by collapsing one side of the quadrilateral element and the construction of the shape functions. The study focuses first on a 4-node bilinear quadrilateral (Q4) element to 3-node constant strain triangular (CST) element, and then on a 8-node serendipity (Q8) element to 6-node triangular element (T6). In the analysis, the quadrilateral element and degenerate triangular element are assumed to be enclosed by straight edges. The theoretical results show that there is another better approach to realize the degeneration, and that even for conventional approach of degeneration we can give more reasonable explanation to the unclear problems like the CST property in degenerate CST element and the necessity of the additional terms in degenerate T6 element.
