Feuillet","doi":"10.1002/ETEP.510","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.1002/ETEP.510","url":null,"abstract":"In the United States electricity market standard, when several transmission service requests (TSRs) are made for a specific pair of power injection/extraction points, the independent system operator (ISO) must allocate the available transmission capability (ATC) associated with the pair to the requests. An ATC allocation must determine the amount of accepted requests as well as the priority of the accepted requests during emergencies. The requests could have different types (recallable/non-recallable), tariffs, and time frames and these factors must be properly considered in ATC allocation. \u0000 \u0000 \u0000 \u0000This paper proposes a method for optimal ATC allocation in the planning horizon which incorporates the type and tariffs of the requests in a mixed integer linear optimization programming for which the expected net revenue of ATC allocation on a seasonal base has to be maximized. The method also incorporates maintenance and forced outage of power system components as well as the load forecast uncertainty in ATC allocation problem. Once allocation accomplished by solving the optimization problem, the amount of the accepted requests and their priorities to the power system operator during emergencies are determined. The proposed method is applied to the modified IEEE reliability test system (IEEE-RTS) and its performance is evaluated. A comparison is made between the results obtained by the proposed method and those obtained using existing ATC allocation methods. Two approaches are finally presented and evaluated to apply the proposed method for allocating ATC to the requests with a yearly base. However, no model can exactly predict pollution flashover voltage of composite insulator at present. Based on high-speed photography of AC pollution flashover process, a model, which is in view of pollution severity, air pressure, shed configuration, and hydrophobicity level and which is suitable for composite insulator with any shed configuration, is proposed. Influences of pollution severity and hydrophobicity on flashover voltage and pressure characteristic exponent are analyzed, from which derives a calculative formula of flashover voltage. Calculated results from the model, validated by experiments, demonstrate that there is a power function relationship between flashover voltage and hydrophobicity level β, and characteristic exponent of hydrophobicity level β is the same as that of pollution severity. Meanwhile, the exponent characterizing the influence of air pressure increases with the fall of pollution severity and the rise of hydrophobicity. Voltage stability index (L-index) is considered as an additional constraint in order to include the system stability into account. To improve the search efficiency of CMAES, penalty parameter-less scheme is employed for constraint handling. To determine the performance of the CMAES method on reactive power planning problem, IEEE-30 bus test system and Tamil Nadu Electricity Board (TNEB)-69 bus system (a practical system in India) are taken. For comparison purposes, the results of real-coded GA (RGA), particle swarm optimization (PSO), sequential quadratic programming (SQP), and Broyden–Fletcher–Goldfarb–Shanno (BFGS) methods are considered. The simulation results reveal that the CMAES algorithm performs better in terms of energy cost, investment cost, and consistency in getting optimal solution. Karush–Kuhn–Tucker (KKT) conditions are also applied on the best solution obtained using CMAES algorithm to substantiate a claim on optimality. First, an accurate numerical method, the charge simulation method, was used to calculate the electric field distribution in the vicinity of bare sub-conductors in bundles. Then the electric field values and a criterion from the gas discharge theory were used to evaluate the onset voltage for negative coronas on the bare sub-conductors. The COVs obtained are in good agreement with literature data for laboratory models and full-scale test lines. Some numerical results for the COV for six-bundle conductors are also discussed. Gan","doi":"10.1002/ETEP.405","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.1002/ETEP.405","url":null,"abstract":"Because the short-term natural gas markets usually close earlier than the electric power markets, most generation companies have to make fuel nomination for natural gas fired power plants (NGFPP) without knowing the actual generation levels, which depend on many uncertain factors such as, new market driven unit commitments, load variations, dispatch instructions, and/or other service requests next day. This is a new issue in electric power market. A novel two-step simulation-optimization framework for valuation of day-ahead natural gas nomination is proposed in this paper. In Step I, the optimal generation levels and profit distributions of feasible gas nomination decisions are simulated, and gas nomination decision is based on Utility Maximization Theory in Step II. The impacts of most major factors such as variable load, price volatilities and long-term fuel contract/storage are considered in this framework. An application of the proposed framework is demonstrated by a numerical example. The results show that the proposed framework is desirable in several key aspects. In such conditions, nonlinear effects have dominant role in determining dynamic response of the systems. In this paper by using modal series method, dynamic behaviors of the stressed power systems in severe conditions and near instability have been studied. Also two measures, mode dominance measure (MDM) and most perturbed machine factor (MPF) have been introduced. They determine the most dominant modes and identify the most perturbed generators when the system is subjected to a given fault. Contribution factors have been used to show the links between identified modes and machines from the analysis. Time domain simulation has been helped for validation of the results. By using similarity transformation, state variables have been represented in modal space and utilized to check the results. The studies are carried out on the IEEE 50-generator test system which demonstrates a wide range of dynamic characteristics at different loading levels and fault scenarios. Despite the extensive investigations carried out on the pollution performance of the insulators, the flashover characteristics are not well understood. Recent theoretical and experimental research on polluted insulators is yet to yield a perfect generalized mathematical model which can accurately predict critical flashover voltage. In this paper, the pollution flashover on the high voltage insulators has been investigated and a new dynamic arc model has been proposed. For this purpose, firstly the concerned insulators' scaled shapes were partitioned into triangular elements, then finite element method (FEM) was implemented for obtaining potential distribution on the surface of insulator and finally flashover voltages were determined by using the developed arc model. For a number of common insulators of different geometries the computed results of flashover voltages on the selected string insulators have been compared to experimental results of some other research. Pollution flashover behaviors of the insulators have been taken into consideration and the validity of the model was thus verified. One of the advanced FACTS controllers is generalized unified power flow controller (GUPFC) or multi-converter UPFC, which can control bus voltage and both the real and reactive power flows of more than one line or even a sub-network. In this paper, dynamic performance of a GUPFC has been investigated using a new fuzzy logic based controller. The controller rules have been structured depending upon the relationship between the series inserted voltages in multi-line and the desired changes of real/reactive power flows in the power system. The effects of different types of controllers along with parameters of series transformers and transmission lines have been investigated through the control block models developed on a sample system in MATLAB SIMULINK. The effectiveness of the proposed scheme has been demonstrated through various case studies.
