Adopting the strategic choice perspective, we argue that the adoption of OI can lead to better performance in terms of business growth in the time of financial crisis, particularly through the “quick-shot solutions” approach relative to the “long-term horizon” approach. We also argue that collaboration, as well as out-bound approach, is complementary to internal R&D in achieving firm growth, whilst in-bound approach is a substitute for internal R&D in achieving firm growth. We further argue that firms with greater openness breadth and depth will achieve higher growth and that there is diminishing marginal benefit from openness breadth and depth. Analyzing a sample of about 300,000 Chinese manufacturing firms matched with patent dataset, we find evidence to support our arguments. This study makes several contributions to the crisis and OI literature.</p></div>","PeriodicalId":50209,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Engineering and Technology Management","volume":"68 ","pages":"Article 101746"},"PeriodicalIF":4.8,"publicationDate":"2023-04-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"42662526","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"管理学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The extant literature partially and conceptually mentions these characteristics and does not systematically identify the differences between process and assembly-based industries. Therefore, we analyse process-industries using data collected through in-depth interviews at sixteen process and six assembly-based companies. Based on design theory, we introduce a framework comprising the following three perspectives: structure (of product), function (of product), and process (of production). In this study, 286 matched data sets between project members and leaders/supervisors, were collected and examined using a mediated moderation model. Drawing from the conservation of resources theory, individuals’ innovative behaviors and leaders’ empowerment strategies were found to positively affect project performance. Leader-member exchange (LMX) both moderates and augments the relationship between innovative behavior and project performance. Further, LMX mediates the moderation effect of empowering leadership and enhances the innovation process. The results of this study offer guidance on how project practitioners can facilitate project performance by motivating innovation in construction projects through empowering strategies and relationship development. This research extends and enriches the current understanding of the processes linking innovative behavior and project performance by identifying the mediating moderation mechanism of empowering leadership and LMX.</p></div>","PeriodicalId":50209,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Engineering and Technology Management","volume":"68 ","pages":"Article 101750"},"PeriodicalIF":4.8,"publicationDate":"2023-04-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"43325807","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"管理学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, these studies have generated heterogeneous results. This is the literature gap that this article intends to explore. The goal of this paper is to find the relationship between technological capability and performance in developing countries. Considering the diversity of quantitative and heterogeneous results in literature, we chose to use the meta-analytic method to achieve the objective of this study. We were able to correlate all of the results from 19 studies regarding more than 6000 firms from developing countries. Due to this study, two results came up. Firstly, we were able to observe that technological capability and performance are positively correlated in developing countries. Secondly, we found that one of the sources of heterogeneity in the results has to do with the existence of different variables used for measuring technological capability and firm performance.</p></div>","PeriodicalId":50209,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Engineering and Technology Management","volume":"68 ","pages":"Article 101753"},"PeriodicalIF":4.8,"publicationDate":"2023-04-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"44254377","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"管理学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, few studies have reported how Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) are using this innovation dynamic. To understand the phenomenon of the adoption of OI by SMEs, this study uses the Institutional Work (IW) theoretical lens, aiming to understand how OI is institutionalized in the organizational environment of SMEs. To identify the combination of practices that reinforce OI the QCA methodology was used. As a result, it is highlighted that OI is being reinforced mainly by the institutional practices of creating and maintaining. Drawing on the dynamic capabilities perspective, this study examines the mediating role of technological capabilities in this relationship as well as considering the moderating role of university and industry (U-I) collaboration between HPWS and technological capabilities. Data for this study were collected from 228 firms in the Turkish automobile industry. Research hypotheses were examined by the partial least squares structural equation modelling technique using SmartPLS. Results revealed that technological capabilities mediated the relationship between HPWS and product innovativeness, and U-I collaboration had a moderating effect in the relationship between HPWS and technological capabilities. While this study examines the role of technological capabilities in the relationship between HPWS and product innovativeness for the first time in the literature, it also aims to understand whether HPWS contribute to the development of organizational level capabilities.
