The sublethal concentration of cadmium (63.4 mg/l Cd) caused tissue damages to the snail after an exposure for 28 days.In the groups treated with EDTA, the concentration of Cd in the foot, mantle and hepatopancreas tissues showed significantly decreased during the recovery period. The curative effects of EDTA on Cd-induced damage were assessed using a scoring system. Cadmium exposure led to histopathological changes including increased mucositis, pigment and protein cells, foot epithelium desquamation, muscle fibril damage, connective tissue cell atrophy, and increased lipid vacuoles in the mantle and hepatopancreas. However, these changes were less severe in snails treated with EDTA (2.00 mL/L for 28 day), indicating that EDTA reduces their susceptibility to heavy metal toxicity.</p>","PeriodicalId":501,"journal":{"name":"Bulletin of Environmental Contamination and Toxicology","volume":"112 6","pages":"84"},"PeriodicalIF":2.7,"publicationDate":"2024-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141185918","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"环境科学与生态学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The proliferation of mini-open dumps (MOD; small spontaneous open-air waste dumps formed in urban and peri-urban areas) on the banks of the Paraná River is particularly evident. During the historical drought (June-December 2021), we carried out sampling campaigns identifying MODs of the Santa Fe River, a secondary channel of the Paraná River. MOD were geolocated, measured, described and classified by origin. The distance to the river and other sensitive places was considered (houses-schools-health facilities). Our results suggested a serious environmental issue associated with poor waste management. MOD were extremely abundant in the study area, being mostly composed of domestic litter. Plastics clearly dominated the MOD composition. Burning was frequently observed as a method to reduce the volume of MOD. We concluded that the proliferation of MOD is a multi-causal problem associated with a failure of public policies and a lack of environmental education.</p>","PeriodicalId":501,"journal":{"name":"Bulletin of Environmental Contamination and Toxicology","volume":"112 6","pages":"81"},"PeriodicalIF":2.7,"publicationDate":"2024-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141185922","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"环境科学与生态学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The elements Co, Ni, Mo, Cd, Al, Cr, Mn, Fe, Cu, Zn, As, Ba, and Pb were determined using <i>A. woodiana</i> from four lacustrine sites. The results showed that Al, Cr, Mn, Fe, Cu, Zn, As, Ba, and Pb were all detected, whereas Co, Ni, Mo, and Cd were below the detection limits of 0.0165, 0.0106, 0.0189 and 0.0182 µg kg<sup>− 1</sup>, respectively. In particular, <i>A. woodiana</i> was noted to be an unusual Mn hyperaccumulator (ranged from 5124.09 to 13015.47 µg g<sup>− 1</sup>). Little research has evaluated their potential influence on the bioavailability of herbicides to non-target aquatic plants. This study evaluated the potential impacts of FA on the bioavailability of atrazine (ATZ) to the aquatic plant Lemna minor. Plants were exposed to 0, 15, 30, 60, 125, and 750 µg/L ATZ in media containing three FA concentrations (0, 5, and 15 mg/L) in a factorial study under static conditions. Fronds were counted after 7- and 14-days exposure and intrinsic growth rates (IGR) and total frond yields were calculated for analysis. Atrazine NOAECs and LOAECs within each FA treatment series (0, 5, or 15 mg/L) were identified and EC50s were estimated. NOAEC/LOAECs for yield and IGR were 60/125 µg/L except for yield in the 0 mg/L-FA series (30/60) and IGR in the 5 mg/L-FA series (30/60). NOAEC/LOAECs were 30/60 µg/L for all treatments and both endpoints after 14 days exposure. EC50s ranged from 88.2 to 106.1 µg/L (frond production 7 DAT), 158.0-186.0 µg/L (IGR, 7 DAT), 74.7-86.3 µg/L (frond production, 14 DAT), and 144.1-151.3 µg/L (IGR, 14 DAT). However, emission of diesel-powered vehicles still poses a significant environmental threat, affecting rural ecosystems and agriculture. Several studies have reported that polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), a group of potentially toxic organic compounds, can accumulate in crops and vegetables. In our study, white mustard (Sinapis alba L.) plants were experimentally treated with an extract of diesel exhaust. PAH concentrations were measured in the different plant compartments (stems, leaves and seeds), bioconcentration factors (BCFs) were also calculated. Significant accumulation was measured in the leaves and seeds, stems showed lower accumulation potential. All plant matrices showed high tendency to accumulate higher molecular weight PAHs, BCF was the highest in the 6-ring group. The fact that considerable accumulation was experienced in the seeds might show the risk of cultivating crops nearby roads highly impacted by traffic-related emissions.</p>","PeriodicalId":501,"journal":{"name":"Bulletin of Environmental Contamination and Toxicology","volume":"112 5","pages":"76"},"PeriodicalIF":2.7,"publicationDate":"2024-05-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC11088551/pdf/","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140907843","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"环境科学与生态学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Pearson correlation analysis was performed between the analytical values. The main compounds responsible for the increase in total PAHs were non-carcinogenic phenanthrene and fluoranthene. Therefore, the % content of carcinogenic PAHs decreased with a slope = -0.037 (r = 0.47, p < 0.01), as the total PAH concentration in pine needles increased. Correlations between individual PAHs in pine needles and surface soil were very high when only low-number ring PAHs (2R- and 3R-PAHs) were statistically analyzed and significant when only high-number ring PAHs were statistically analyzed. Low-number ring PAH mainly moves in the gas phase and diffuses into the wax layer, so it was found to be statistically significant with the wax content of pine needles. High-number ring PAHs showed a high correlation with the amount of dust in pine needles because they mainly attached to dust particles and accumulated on the surface of pine needles. Clay soil was mixed with 15%, 30%, 45% and 60% plant-based organic compost (by volume) in 20 cm wide, 2 L pots. Moringa oleifera plants were planted in four replicates of each treatment and control group. Results revealed that the addition of compost significantly (P < 0.05) altered the concentration of metals in the soil. Correspondingly, accumulation of nutrients in M. oleifera leaves increased with the addition of compost to the soil, except for cobalt and chromium. Trace elements had minimal bioavailability in the amended soils, and their presence in the leaves was lower than the permissible trace metal levels in food. The 30% combination had the highest concentration of calcium (45 042.5 mg/kg), magnesium (17430.0 mg/kg) and phosphorous (8802. 5 mg/kg) in M. oleifera leaves. The study concluded the addition of compost improved bioavailability of nutrients in the soil and their concentration in M. oleifera leaves. The target hazard quotients for heavy metals was less than one, indicating that M. oleifera leaf biomass harvested from soil amended with plant-based compost is safe for human consumption.
