Co-substrates are a promising substrate for enhanced biohydrogen production. For the experimental set-up, a 1-L-working-volume reactor was used for biohydrogen production by bacterial monocultures and consortium on co-substrates. A batch experiment was performed at 37°C with an initial pH of 7.0 and a mixing ratio of 600:300 between DW and solid SCB. Total solids, volatile solids, total chemical oxygen demand, soluble chemical oxygen demand, and hydrogen production rate were determined from co-substrates during the dark fermentation process. Morphological changes of biohydrogen producing bacteria binds on co-substrates after the fermentation process were determined using SEM imaging. The bacteria can degrade the substrate when they attach to it causing hole formation and cracked the surface area. The level of biohydrogen production by bacterial consortium was observed and the results revealed a 8 cumulative hydrogen production of 1098 mL H 2 /L, HPR of 35.9 mL H 2 /h/L, and HY of 3.6 mL/H 2 /gVS(removal) utilizing co-substrates at pH 7.","PeriodicalId":500086,"journal":{"name":"Research Square (Research Square)","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-11-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"136229877","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The purpose of this study was to examine the compatibility of various multiple average office BP measurements and 24-h BP monitoring (ABPM) in patients follow-up in the Cappadocia HT cohort. Methods: 1158 office BP measurements by 207 patients were examined. Five BP measurements were taken at each office visit. The results were then classified as G1 (average of the 1 st and 2 nd BP measurements), G2 (average of the 2 nd and 3 rd ), G3 (average of the 2 nd , 3 rd , and 4 th ), G4 (average of the 2nd, 3rd, 4 th , and 5 th ), and G5 (average of five measurements). Compatibility between the average values in the groups and concomitant 24-h ABPM data was examined. Results: While a significant difference was observed between daytime 24-h ABPM SBP and G1 (p=0.002), no difference was found the other groups. Office DBP approached the daytime 24-h ABPM values as the number of measurements in the five groups increased, although average office DBP data in all groups were higher than daytime 24-h ABPM DBP (p 0.000 for all). Conclusion: In the light of our study results, we recommend that three office BP measurements be performed and that the average of the 2 nd and 3 rd measurements be used for SBP, while in terms of DBP, we recommend that as many measurements as possible be taken without the 1 st value being included in the average.","PeriodicalId":500086,"journal":{"name":"Research Square (Research Square)","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-11-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"136232311","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Patients admitted to cardio-thoracic critical care are usually exposed to opioids, but the incidence and effects of chronic opioid use are not known. The primary objective was to describe opioid use after admission to a cardio-thoracic intensive care unit. Secondary objectives were to identify factors associated with chronic opioid usage and analyze risk of death. This cohort study included all cardio-thoracic ICU care episodes in Sweden between 2010 and 2018. Among the 34,200 patients included in the final study cohort, 4,050 developed persistent opioid use after ICU care. Younger age, preadmission opioid use, female sex, presence of comorbidities and earlier year of ICU admission were all found to be associated with persistent opioid use. The adjusted hazard ratio for mortality between 6 to 18 months after admission among individuals with persistent opioid use was 2.2 (95% CI: 1.8–2.6; P < 0.001). For opioid-naïve patients before ICU admission, new onset of chronic opioid usage was significant during the follow-up period of 24 months. Despite the absence of conclusive evidence supporting extended opioid treatment, the average opioid consumption remains notably elevated twelve months subsequent to cardio-thoracic ICU care.","PeriodicalId":500086,"journal":{"name":"Research Square (Research Square)","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-11-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"136232451","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Frontline malaria treatments are artemisinin-based combination therapies (ACTs). The expression of key genes in the biosynthesis pathway of artemisinin can be regulated through metabolic engineering. In this study, we evaluated changes in the mRNA levels of the AaWRKY1 , AaMYB2 , HMGR , and CYP71A1 genes following the application of iron oxide nanoparticles (Fe 3 O 4 -NPs) after 0, 4, 8, 24, 48, and 96 h of spraying at concentrations of 0, 50, 100, and 200 mg L − 1 on the leaves of 6-week-old A. annua plants. The total protein contents and the activity of the CAT, POX, SOD, and PAL enzymes were increased by Fe 3 O 4 -NP, which triggered an enzymatic defense system associated with reactive oxygen species (ROS). This ROS-related defense mechanism was activated by Fe 3 O 4 -NPs, which significantly stimulated the expression of those target key genes and raised the artemisinin levels in A. annua . The artemisinin content increased after 96 h by 98.5%, 76.3%, and 77% in plants treated with the three Fe 3 O 4 -NP concentrations, respectively compared to the control. These findings can help the commercial production of this important medicinal compound both in vivo and in vitro .","PeriodicalId":500086,"journal":{"name":"Research Square (Research Square)","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-11-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134953868","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

AIM This study sets out to analyze websites that provide patient-centered information on robotic colorectal surgery. METHOD Three search engines (Google, Yahoo and Firefox) were used with search terms ‘robotic colorectal surgery’ and the first twenty results on each platform assessed. After screening sites using predetermined criteria, further analysis was performed with the DISCERN questionnaire and Cohen Kappa analysis. RESULTS Out of the 60 websites identified from the initial search, only 14 websites contained patient information on robotic colorectal surgery. Of these, only three (21%) sites had been updated in the past year and one site was last updated ten years ago. Ten (71%) websites were affiliated with hospitals and the majority (12, 86%) were based in the United States of America (USA). Approximately half of the websites explored alternative surgical techniques, only three (21%) discussed the risks, a similar number had details on post-operative experience, and none mentioned cost implications, ongoing research or the waiting list involved. Overall, no website had a perfect score of 5 to be classified as good or excellent. There was at least a fair level of agreement (reliability score of >0.2) in twelve DISCERN criteria (80%), four of which were statistically significant. CONCLUSION Despite the huge volume of generic information on colorectal surgery, there is still a paucity of comprehensive patient-centered information on robotics as a modality of treatment. It usually affects the head and neck regions. The most common site is the oral cavity, while involvement of the nasal cavity is quite rare. Though few cases in the nasal cavity have been reported, occurrence in the inferior turbinates is extremely rare. The exact aetiology is unknown.It is often associated with pregnancy. Microtrauma, hormonal changes, and contraceptives may be the causative factors for the development of this vascular mass. CASE PRESENTATION Here we present the case of a 28-year-old woman, 2 weeks postpartum, with epistaxis and nasal obstruction. Diagnostic nasal endoscopy revealed a vascular mass arising from the right inferior turbinate. The patient was treated successfully by endoscopic excision of the mass.Histopatholoical examination showed as pyogenic granuloma. CONCLUSION Pyogenic granuloma should be considered as a differential diagnosis in any pregnant woman presenting with a vascular mass in the head and neck region.","PeriodicalId":500086,"journal":{"name":"Research Square (Research Square)","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-11-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134956894","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Materials and Methods An oversized osteotomy penetrating the double cortical bone layers was made on both femora of 24 New Zealand white rabbits. Bilaterally in the femur of all animals, 48 implants were installed, subdivided into four groups, corresponding to four prepared tissue-engineered bone grafts (TEBGs), which were placed between the implant surface and native bone wall: A: tricalcium phosphate β (TCP-β); B: autologous adipose derived-stem cells with TCP-β (ASCs/TCP-β); C: ASCs transfected with the enhanced-GFP gene with TCP-β (EGFP-ASCs/TCP-β); D: ASCs transfected with the BMP-2 gene with TCP-β (BMP2-ASCs/TCP-β). Trichrome fluorescent labeling was conducted. Animals were sacrificed after eight weeks. The trichromatic fluorescent labeling (%TFL), area of new bone (%NB), residual material (%RM), bone-implant contact (%BIC), and the removal torque force (RTF, N/cm) were assessed. Results The BMP-2 overexpression of ASCs sustained for ten days and greatly enhanced osteogenic differentiation. At eight weeks post-implantation, increased %NB and RTF were found in all groups. The most significant value of %TFL, %BIC and lowest %RM was detected in group D. Conclusion The low PS implants osseointegrate with considerable new bone in TEBGs peri-stuffed site. The addition of ASCs and BMP-2 further stimulated the %BIC. Bone graft offers wedging effect for the implant with low PS at placement and promotes osteogenesis on their surface in the healing period.","PeriodicalId":500086,"journal":{"name":"Research Square (Research Square)","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-11-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134956996","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, the biological function of these genes remains unclear in perennial wood plants. In this study, we identified an Aux/IAA10 gene ( BpIAA10 ) from birch ( Betula platyphylla) that is associated with growth of embryonic leaves. The result was confirmed by gain- and loss-of-function analysis of BpIAA10 . Transgenic birch overexpressing (OE) and repressing (RE) BpIAA10 exhibited significantly increased numbers of embryonic leaves and stipules than non-transgenic lines (NT). The IAA concentration was increased by 3.50 and 3.61-fold in OE and RE lines than NT, respectively. Yeast two-hybrid and bimolecular fluorescence complementation (BiFC) analysis revealed that BpIAA10 specifically interacts with BpIAA7 and BpARF19 during leaf development. In addition, we found both overexpression and repression of BpIAA10 affected the expression of auxin biosynthesis and metabolism genes, auxin response genes, and leaf development genes. All these results indicated that BpIAA10 is involved in the differentiation and growth of embryonic leaves by specific interactions and complex regulation with components of the birch auxin response pathway. Our findings provide insights into leaf growth and differentiation in perennial trees.","PeriodicalId":500086,"journal":{"name":"Research Square (Research Square)","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-11-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134957021","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Despite having a higher prevalence, ATTRwt amyloidosis is less well characterized due to its non-hereditary nature, and its relatively poorer disease awareness delays diagnosis. Understanding of its natural history has evolved in recent years, but this is largely based on physician-collected data rather than patients’ reports of their own experiences. Results: Using a mixed-methods approach, we first conducted a US-based survey to explore how the journey of patients with ATTRwt amyloidosis differs from that of patients with ATTRv amyloidosis. The results revealed a high disease burden for patients with both conditions, with patients with ATTRwt reporting more diagnoses and procedures prior to their final diagnosis. Through further in-depth interviews with participants with ATTRwt amyloidosis, we present direct quotes from patients illustrating the paths they often take to diagnosis, through interactions with multiple physicians and specialists, and the opportunities for earlier diagnosis. Conclusions: Our study provides insight into the overall impact of the patient journey on their quality of life and demonstrates how increased awareness of ATTRwt amyloidosis and more coordinated engagement with physicians could reduce the time to diagnosis.","PeriodicalId":500086,"journal":{"name":"Research Square (Research Square)","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-11-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134957056","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
