Whether aortic root size (ARS) is increased in cats with HCM is unknown. We aimed to determine ARS in cats with HCM with and without obstruction and compare results to healthy control cats and cats with hyperthyroidism (HT4) and systemic hypertension (SH), common differentials of HCM. We hypothesized that cats with HCM have increased ARS. A retrospective observational echocardiographic study in 219 client-owned cats was conducted (161 HCM [97 obstructive, 64 non-obstructive], 37 SH, 21 with a mixed HT4/HCM phenotype). Nine echocardiographic variables characterizing ARS were evaluated (diameter of the aortic valve, sinus of Valsalva, sinotubular junction [STJ], and ascending aorta [AscAo] measured at end-systole and end-diastole and sinus height measured at end-diastole). Multivariable analysis with adjustment for age, sex, treatment, and body weight (BW) and Bonferroni correction were used for group comparisons. There was only a difference between HCM and control for AscAo in diastole (7.82 ± 1.11 mm vs. 8.34 ± 1.43 mm, P<0.0001). The STJ in systole was larger in cats with obstructive compared to non-obstructive HCM (mean difference 0.33 mm; 95% confidence interval 0.04 to 0.62; P=0.021). There was no difference between HCM and SH for ARS, but ARS was larger in cats with SH compared to control. In conclusion, cats with HCM do not have aortic root enlargement beyond differences expected by BW, age, and sex.</p>","PeriodicalId":49959,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Veterinary Medical Science","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":1.1,"publicationDate":"2026-04-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"147787551","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"农林科学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Over this two-decade span, we have made significant contributions to HIV/AIDS research through the development and characterization of various SHIV models. Beginning with the isolation and characterization of molecular clones with different pathogenicities from SHIV-89.6P, we progressed to investigating the mechanisms of small intestinal CD4+ T cell depletion in SHIV infection. Subsequently, we developed R5-tropic SHIV models that better mimic natural HIV infection and conducted in-depth studies on neutralizing antibody induction and neutralization resistance. This review examines these research achievements chronologically, discusses their significance in understanding HIV/AIDS pathogenesis, and presents future research prospects in this field. Our findings have contributed substantially to elucidating the molecular mechanisms of HIV pathogenicity and establishing platforms for vaccine and therapeutic development.</p>","PeriodicalId":49959,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Veterinary Medical Science","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":1.1,"publicationDate":"2026-04-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"147787459","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"农林科学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

BoLA-DRB3 is a polymorphic gene associated with BLV proviral load (PVL), which dictates disease progression and transmission risk; progeny PVL is influenced by the BoLA-DRB3 alleles of their sires. In addition, two novel single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) affecting BLV PVL have been identified in Japanese Black cattle. In this study, to identify whether two specific PVL-associated SNPs (SNP<sub>T</sub>12 and SNP<sub>T</sub>13) were associated with elevated PVL in Japanese Black cattle, we developed and validated a high-throughput TaqMan-based SNP genotyping assay targeting SNP<sub>T</sub>12 and SNP<sub>T</sub>13, clarified the distribution of these SNP genotypes in 178 distinct commercial semen samples from widely used Japanese Black sires, and confirmed that the distribution was based on field blood samples collected from Japanese Black cattle in a nationwide survey across Japan. A total of 199 progeny derived from 36 sires representing three SNP<sub>T</sub>13 genotypes (TT, TC, and CC) were assessed for SNP<sub>T</sub>13 genotype and BLV PVL. Progeny from sires with TT genotype exhibited the highest mean PVL, whereas those from sires with CC genotype showed the lowest PVL. The intensity of BLV PVL followed the order: progeny with TT genotype > progeny with TC genotype > progeny with CC genotype. These findings demonstrate that BLV susceptibility is inherited by the progeny via SNP<sub>T</sub>13 genotypes in semen, and that SNP genotypes in semen offer a useful tool for predicting heritable BLV susceptibility.</p>","PeriodicalId":49959,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Veterinary Medical Science","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":1.1,"publicationDate":"2026-04-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"147724519","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"农林科学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

While plasma total cholesterol (TCHO) is a reliable indicator of energy balance, its role as a lagging indicator makes early detection of 'refractory' calves-those with delayed metabolic recovery-challenging. This study aimed to characterize nutritional, bone metabolic, and stress-related physiological changes during the weaning transition and to identify early predictors of post-weaning metabolic resilience. Twelve naturally suckled Japanese Black calves were monitored from two weeks before weaning to six weeks after weaning for multiple indicators: plasma total cholesterol (TCHO), beta-hydroxybutyrate (BHB), non-esterified fatty acid (NEFA), glucose (GLU), albumin (ALB), blood urea nitrogen (BUN), calcium (Ca), phosphorus (P), alkaline phosphatase 3 (ALP3), tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase 5b (TRAP5b), cortisol, and oxytocin. Calves were grouped into low and high TCHO groups based on plasma TCHO concentrations six weeks after weaning, and group differences and predictive performance were evaluated using mixed models and ROC analysis. Across all calves, plasma TCHO, NEFA, GLU, ALB, P, ALP3, and TRAP5b decreased after weaning, whereas stress-related biomarkers remained within reported physiological ranges and showed no clear weaning-associated surge. Pre-weaning salivary cortisol showed discriminative ability for subsequent refractory metabolic recovery (AUC=1.00). In conclusion, pre-weaning salivary cortisol serves as a sensitive indicator of 'metabolic readiness' to identify calves at risk for refractory recovery, facilitating proactive management to optimize growth and resilience in natural suckling systems.</p>","PeriodicalId":49959,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Veterinary Medical Science","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":1.1,"publicationDate":"2026-04-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"147724550","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"农林科学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Canine oligodendrogliomas often arise adjacent to the cerebral ventricles and express several neural stem cell (NSC) markers, including sex-determining region Y-box transcription factor (SOX) 2, suggesting that NSCs are their origin. To investigate why oligodendrogliomas are more prevalent in brachycephalic dogs, the quantity, immunophenotypes, and proliferative activity of NSCs were examined and compared in the brains of adult brachycephalic and non-brachycephalic dogs. Histological examinations revealed clusters of two types of cells, small round cells and medium-sized spindle cells, in the subventricular zone and caudate nucleus in all samples. Immunohistochemically, small round cells were positive for SOX2 and doublecortin, corresponding to type A NSCs (neuroblasts). Medium-sized spindle cells were positive for SOX2, SOX9, and vimentin, corresponding to type B NSCs (multipotent astrocytes). The number of SOX2-positive and proliferating cell nuclear antigen-positive cells in the caudate nucleus was significantly higher in brachycephalic dogs than in non-brachycephalic dogs. We then examined canine oligodendroglioma tissues and found that tumor cells were immunopositive for SOX2, SOX9, and vimentin, similar to the immunophenotype of type B NSCs. These results indicate that brachycephalic adult dogs retain a higher number of NSCs with higher proliferative activity in the brain, which may create an environment prone to oligodendroglioma.</p>","PeriodicalId":49959,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Veterinary Medical Science","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":1.1,"publicationDate":"2026-04-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"147692514","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"农林科学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Acute kidney injury (AKI) superimposed on CKD (AKI on CKD) is associated with a markedly poor prognosis; however, experimental models that accurately reflect this condition in SLE are limited. This study aimed to establish and characterize an AKI on CKD model using SLE-prone mice with pre-existing immune complex-mediated glomerulonephritis. Female NZB/W F1 mice with established glomerulonephritis at 32 weeks of age were administered cisplatin (10 mg/kg, intraperitoneally) to induce AKI. Blood urea nitrogen (BUN), serum neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin (NGAL), urinary NGAL, and the urinary NGAL-to-creatinine ratio were evaluated as clinicopathological indicators of renal injury. Following cisplatin administration, BUN and serum NGAL concentrations increased significantly. Urinary NGAL concentrations and the urinary NGAL-to-creatinine ratio were also significantly elevated on days 1-4 after AKI induction compared with baseline, whereas urinary protein concentration, urinary creatinine concentration, and the urinary protein-to-creatinine ratio showed no significant changes. NGAL is synthesized by macrophages, glial cells, and epithelial cells under inflammatory conditions and is an established biomarker of tubular injury in AKI. The observed increases in BUN and NGAL parameters confirm successful induction of AKI in SLE mice with pre-existing CKD. This cisplatin-induced AKI model in NZB/W F1 mice may serve as a useful AKI on CKD model for investigating disease mechanisms and developing therapeutic strategies for AKI in patients with SLE and CKD.</p>","PeriodicalId":49959,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Veterinary Medical Science","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":1.1,"publicationDate":"2026-04-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"147693324","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"农林科学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The vertebral body length, height, and height to length (H/L) ratio were measured from L1-L6 in all cats and at L7 in the 7LV group. Group comparisons were performed overall and by sex, and associations with sex, body weight, breed, and transitional vertebrae were analyzed. Additional adjusted analyses were performed to account for body weight and sex. Cats in the 6LV group had significantly longer vertebral bodies and lower H/L ratios at L1 to L5, whereas L6 was longer in the 7LV group. Vertebral body height was consistently lower across lumbar levels in the 6LV group. Vertebral length and height were positively correlated with body weight in both groups, and males had larger vertebrae than females. Overall transitional vertebrae prevalence did not differ between groups, but 13th rib hypoplasia was more common in the 6LV group. The relationships between antimicrobial type, concentration, and bacterial count in relation to the amount of LPS released were evaluated. Bacterial morphology, which is closely associated with LPS release, was also investigated. At an initial inoculum of 10<sup>5</sup> CFU/mL, the amount of LPS released after 4 hr of incubation with MBFX and CEZ was significantly lower than that for the negative control (NC) group at concentrations higher than 5× the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) for E. coli and higher than 50× MIC for K. pneumoniae. These findings suggest that exposure to high-dose antimicrobials results in reduced LPS release associated with bacterial growth and lysis. Conversely, at an initial inoculum of 10<sup>8</sup> CFU/mL, incubation with MBFX and CEZ at concentrations of 50× MIC and 250× MIC for 4 hr resulted in an amount of LPS released that was comparable to that for the NC group for both E. coli and K. pneumoniae. Both MBFX and CEZ also induced bacterial filamentation, but the morphological changes were less pronounced than those induced by CAZ and were associated with lower LPS release. These suggest that early administration of high concentrations of antimicrobials at low bacterial loads may mitigate the adverse effects associated with LPS release in cases of mastitis caused by E. coli and K. pneumoniae.</p>","PeriodicalId":49959,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Veterinary Medical Science","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":1.1,"publicationDate":"2026-04-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"147693409","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"农林科学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
