This study examines cancer-related lifestyle behaviors, attitudes toward cancer screening, and their interrelationship in adults. Materials and Methods: A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted among 1129 adults (aged 18-70) visiting family health centers in Kayseri, Türkiye. Data was collected via face-to-face surveys assessing sociodemographic characteristics, lifestyle behaviors (Lifestyle Questionnaire Related to Cancer), and screening attitudes (Attitude Scale Toward Cancer Screenings). Statistical analyses included Mann-Whitney U, Kruskal-Wallis, and Spearman correlation tests. Results: Women, married participants, urban residents, and those with higher education and income exhibited healthier lifestyle behaviors and more positive attitudes toward cancer screening (p < 0.05). A weak but significant correlation (r = 0.247, p < 0.05) was found between healthy lifestyle behaviors and positive screening attitudes. Despite national screening programs, adherence to breast and cervical cancer screenings remained low (51.5% and 44.6%, respectively). Having a first-degree relative with cancer did not significantly influence screening behaviors. Conclusions: Gender, education, income, and marital status significantly influence cancer prevention behaviors. However, screening participation remains suboptimal, highlighting the need for targeted public health strategies. Improving health literacy and accessibility to screening programs could enhance cancer prevention efforts.
","PeriodicalId":49830,"journal":{"name":"Medicina-Lithuania","volume":"61 3","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":2.4,"publicationDate":"2025-03-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC11944137/pdf/","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"143722279","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"医学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The presence of these factors might lead to greater dependence on caregivers and could present potential barriers to community engagement. Physical functioning might be considered as one of the vital components for healthier aging experience promotion and support in elderly people. This study aimed to assess self-perceived general health and related health characteristics among the elderly population in Serbia, with a focus on varying degrees of functional limitations, as well as to analyze the predictors of physical functioning limitations in relation to gender. Materials and Methods: This population-based modeling study included a representative sample of 3540 elderly individuals aged above 65 years from Serbia. We employed a dual approach to model the four distinct difficulty levels related to the two groups of limitations of physical functioning (PF1 and PF2) for both genders. The PF1 focused on walking half a kilometer on level ground without the assistance of any mobility aids, and the PF2 navigated a set of 12 steps of ascent and descent: Model 1: inability to execute PF1, Model 2: some/a lot of difficulty in PF1, Model 3: inability to execute PF2, and Model 4: some/a lot of difficulty in PF2. Further variables were evaluated: self-perceived general health, long-lasting health problems, and chronic diseases/chronic conditions. Logistic regression analysis was performed to assess predictors of physical functioning. The models' performance was presented. Results: Significant predictors were as follows: self-perceived general health (Model 1 (male OR: 8.639; female OR: 3.569); Model 2 (male OR: 2.759; female OR: 2.277); Model 3 (male OR: 24.290; female OR: 5.090); Model 4 (male OR: 3.256; female OR: 2.152)); long-lasting general health (Model 1 (female OR: 2.867); Model 3 (female OR: 3.602)); pulmonary diseases (Model 2 (male OR: 2.036); Model 4 (male OR: 1.976; female OR: 1.756)); musculoskeletal diseases (Model 1 (female OR: 1.537); Model 2 (male OR: 1.397; female OR: 1.410); Model 3 (male OR: 1.954; female OR: 1.739); Model 4 (male OR: 1.531; female OR: 1.483)); and other chronic diseases (Model 3 (male OR: 2.215)). Conclusions: Bad self-perceived general health and pulmonary and musculoskeletal diseases were predictors of functional disability in both genders of elderly individuals, while long-lasting health problems were predictors of functional disability in females and other chronic diseases were predictors in elderly males.
","PeriodicalId":49830,"journal":{"name":"Medicina-Lithuania","volume":"61 3","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":2.4,"publicationDate":"2025-03-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC11943745/pdf/","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"143722130","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"医学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Biofilms formed inside biliary stents consist of a mixed spectrum of bacterial communities, most of which usually originate from the intestines. The patency of biliary stents is the most important problem. Stent occlusion can threaten the health and even life of patients. The main cause of this phenomenon is bile sludge, which is an excellent environment for the multiplication and existence of microorganisms. Due to the great clinical importance of maintaining the patency of biliary stents, several methods have been developed to prevent the accumulation of sludge and the subsequent formation of biofilm; these include, among others, the use of anti-adhesive materials, coating the inner surface of stents with metal cations (silver, copper) or other antimicrobial substances, the implementation of biodegradable drug-eluting biliary stents and the development of a new stent design with an anti-reflux effect. This article presents the latest information on the formation of biofilms in biliary stents, as well as historical and future methods of prevention.
","PeriodicalId":49830,"journal":{"name":"Medicina-Lithuania","volume":"61 3","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":2.4,"publicationDate":"2025-03-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC11943510/pdf/","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"143722272","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"医学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Conservative treatments often offer limited relief, particularly in severe cases. Vascularized lymph node transfer (VLNT), especially using the gastroepiploic lymph node flap, has emerged as a promising intervention. This study evaluates the long-term outcomes of gastroepiploic VLNT combined with suction-assisted lipectomy (SAL) for extremity lymphedema. Materials and Methods: A retrospective review was conducted on 53 patients treated for lymphedema at our clinic in Taiwan from January 2016 to August 2023. The inclusion criteria required patients to have persistent lymphedema for at least six months despite conservative treatment. VLNT was performed using a laparoscopic approach, and postoperative assessments included limb circumference measurements, lymphoscintigraphy, and tonicity evaluations. Results: Follow-up data were collected for a minimum of 12 months. At a mean follow-up of 14.2 months, significant reductions in limb circumference were observed-35.5% ± 24.9% for upper limbs and 32.2% ± 4.5% for lower limbs. Tonicity improved by 6.2%, and no cellulitis episodes were reported post-surgery. Minor complications included hematoma and sensory changes, with no major donor-site morbidity. Lymphoscintigraphy confirmed improved lymphatic drainage. Conclusions: Gastroepiploic VLNT combined with SAL is an effective and safe treatment for severe extremity lymphedema, providing significant improvements in limb size and tissue tonicity. It is unfortunate that there is currently no universal questionnaire available in Arabic to determine whether an athlete is ready to return to sports. So, this cross-cultural validation study was carried out to translate and validate the Injury-Psychological Readiness to Return to Sport Scale (I-PRRS) into the Arabic language. Materials and Methods: One hundred twenty athletes with lower extremity injuries (95 males and 25 females) completed the Arabic I-PRRS twice with a one-week time interval. An additional 50 athletes, comprising 40 males and 10 females, also participated in the study by completing the questionnaire during their initial visit to a physical therapist. Floor and ceiling effects, internal consistency, reliability, discriminate validity, convergent validity, and factor construct were analyzed. Results: The I-PRRS was translated into Arabic with no floor or ceiling effects. It had good internal consistency (0.84) and excellent test-retest reliability (ICC 0.88, 95% CI 0.73-0.95) where the lower bound of 95% CI indicated at least good reliability. The SEM was 1.14, and the MDC was 3.27 points. Athletes who were cleared to RTS demonstrated significant differences in their responses compared with those who were visiting their physical therapist for the first time. These differences were significant across all individual items, as well as in the total scores of the assessment (p < 0.001). There was a significant moderate correlation between overall scores on the I-PRRS and the Tampa Scale of Kinesiophobia (TSK) (rs = 0.69, p < 0.05). Conclusions: The Arabic version of the I-PRRS demonstrated good reliability and validity, making it a suitable tool for evaluating psychological readiness to RTS among injured athletes in Arabic-speaking populations.
","PeriodicalId":49830,"journal":{"name":"Medicina-Lithuania","volume":"61 3","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":2.4,"publicationDate":"2025-03-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC11943973/pdf/","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"143722289","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"医学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this study, the Metabolic Syndrome Knowledge and Awareness Scale (MSKAS) was used to assess metabolic syndrome awareness, and the Perception of Health Scale (PHS) was used to assess the perception of health. Results: The MetS knowledge and awareness level and the health perception of individuals attending sports centers are at a moderate level, and a weak but significant positive relationship has been found between MetS knowledge and awareness and health perception. Moreover, MSKAS scores were higher in women (p < 0.05). Participants who were knowledgeable about chronic diseases had higher MSKAS and PHS scores (p < 0.05). Those with a family history of chronic disease had higher PHS scores (p < 0.05). Participants who tracked their daily caloric intake had higher PHS scores (p < 0.05). Additionally, those who monitored their daily step count had higher MSKAS and PHS scores (p < 0.05). Conclusions: These findings suggest that the levels of MetS knowledge and awareness, as well as health perception, may vary depending on various individual and behavioral factors among individuals attending fitness centers.
","PeriodicalId":49830,"journal":{"name":"Medicina-Lithuania","volume":"61 3","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":2.4,"publicationDate":"2025-03-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC11944132/pdf/","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"143722391","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"医学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
