The aim of the research was to study the possibilities of generating soliton-like waves in the form of wave packets with a soliton envelope. Bottom autonomous wave recorders models ARW-10 to ARW-14K, with one second discretization, were installed in the coastal zone of the southeastern coast of Sakhalin Island. The wave time series were subjected to bandpass filtering in the period range of 15 min to 3 h, revealing nine events in which the amplitudes of anomalous waves exceeded the background level by more than twice. For the selected events, modeling using the time-like form of the Korteweg–de Vries (KdV) equation was performed, showing that the soliton serves as the envelope for the registered wave packets. The possibility of describing such packets using breathers was considered, as each event presented a wave packet rather than a single wave, indicating modulation of the soliton envelope. A possible mechanism for the generation of soliton-like waves was considered, and a criterion for the range of propagation speeds of these waves was proposed, analogous to tsunami waves, as both are long waves. Using the speed range and distances to potential seismic sources of anomalous waves, determined from maps, intervals of seismic events from August 2008 to June 2022 with magnitudes greater than 5, corresponding to the possible arrival of anomalous waves at the coast of Sakhalin Island, were identified. From these waves, the one whose arrival time coincided with the observation time of the soliton-like wave was selected, and it was determined which earthquake could have generated the arriving wave. It was found that four events from the selected ones met the condition of soliton-like waves arriving from seismic sources at the observation point. It was shown that despite the assumptions made in choosing the criterion for the propagation speed of soliton-like waves, the interval of time during which a particular earthquake occurred was determined uniquely, and no other earthquakes fell into it. We show how to construct operators that accomplish this task for finite-difference time domain schemes, including temporal first-order schemes in isotropic, anisotropic and elastic media, as well as temporal second-order schemes for acoustic media. This task is achieved by implementing a computational tradeoff differing from traditional single step wavefield propagators by precomputing propagator matrices for each model location for <span><math><mi>k</mi></math></span> timesteps (a superstep) and using these propagator matrices to advance the wavefield <span><math><mi>k</mi></math></span> time steps at once. We construct weak solutions to the kinetic equation for soliton gas describing collision of two dense “polychromatic” soliton gases composed of a finite number of “monochromatic” components, each consisting of solitons with nearly identical spectral parameters of the scattering operator in the Lax pair. The interaction between the gas components plays the key role in the emergent, large-scale hydrodynamic evolution. We then use the solutions of the spectral kinetic equation to evaluate macroscopic physical observables in KdV and fNLS soliton gases and compare them with the respective ensemble averages extracted from the “exact” soliton gas numerical solutions of the KdV and fNLS equations. There is no inherent dissipation mechanism in these equations, however, in many physical systems the wave evolution is affected by energy gains and losses and therefore these NLS-like equations have to be modified to include these effects. Here, we focus on the evolution of wind-forced ocean waves propagating in ice-covered waters, such as in the polar regions. The peculiar feature of this physical system is the heterogeneous, frequency-dependent, attenuation. A recently proposed depth-averaged model with improved turbulence modelling and energy balance is used for numerical simulation compared with the classical shallow water equations. The leading wave of the wave packet, the front runner, increases in depth, velocity and celerity when propagating downstream. The front runner develops to a solitary bore with exceedingly large peak depth and velocity after travelling sufficiently long distance. Shallow water equations are found to significantly underestimate the peak depth and velocity of the front runner. The wavefront smoothly connects the wave peak to the steady-uniform flow with finite shock thickness, as opposed to the simple depth-and-velocity discontinuity predicted by shallow water equations. The bottom friction coefficient is remarkably reduced at the wavefront of the roll wave, especially at the front-runner wavefront, while shallow water equations cannot give such information. It has recently been suggested that the elastic energy density governing the equilibrium distortions of these materials may be <em>quartic</em> in the measure of <em>twist</em>. Here we show that the non-linear twist-wave equation associated with such an energy has smooth solutions that break down in a finite time, giving rise to the formation of a shock wave, under rather generic assumptions on the initial profile. Traditional acoustic techniques have some limitations to analyze the condition of the cement layer of wells, such as the need for removing the production tubing, which is costly and time-consuming. This increased the interest in alternative solutions that allow the assessment of cement quality in multi-string wells. Acoustic-guided waves can be employed to inspect the cement condition in a multi-string scenario, which have recently shown to be promising, mainly regarding inspection through the production tubing. This article compares semi-analytical finite elements method and finite element method to model wave propagation in multilayered cylindrical media, mimicking an oil well under the presence of defects, in order to assess the integrity of oil wells either in the multi or single string well scenarios. In addition, a thorough investigation, through the application of the two-dimensional Fourier transform, was carried out to identify which guided wave mode is most affected by the presence and the severity of common downhole defects in the cement casing. Results show that, the semi-analytical finite element method can be used to identify guided wave modes that are more sensitive to defects in the cement layer and those that do not propagate. In general, the comparisons in the frequency domain for single or dual-string cases had good agreement, showing that the most considerable variation of the wavemodes occurs at slownesses below <span><math><mrow><mn>700</mn><mspace></mspace><mi>μ</mi><mi>s</mi></mrow></math></span>/m in the frequency range from 5 to 25 kHz. The semi-analytical method had a lower computational cost and faster mode acquisition speed than the finite element method. The semi-analytical method in single-string case was up to approximately 6.5 fold faster than the finite element method and, in the most complex case, it was 1.8 fold faster than the finite element method; whereas the semi-analytical method in dual-string case, the quickest case was approximately 3.5 fold faster than the finite element method and, the most complex case was 1.2 fold faster than the finite element method. Using a perturbation approach and the time-harmonic Green function for isotropic plates, an explicit expression is derived for the displacement field of nonlinearly generated secondary waves when two primary monochromatic straight-crested Rayleigh–Lamb/shear horizontal waves intersect at an arbitrary angle in a right cylindrical region of arbitrary cross-section and height equal to the plate thickness. The resulting displacement observed far away from the interaction region in the direction of the wavevector of driving forces (i.e., the sum or difference of wavevectors of primary modes) is shown to grow in proportion to the interaction volume when the wavenumber of secondary mode coincides with that of driving forces with nonzero energy transfer from the primary to the secondary modes. The influence of the interaction volume and the intersection angle on the secondary wave field is investigated for a special case where the interaction region is a right circular cylinder. This equation plays important role for description of the wave processes in the presence of shear flows. We find well-formed breather-type structures arising from the evolution of depression disturbances with positive cubic nonlinearity. For elevation disturbances, the results are two-fold. When the cubic nonlinearity is negative, we show that the CV-Whitham equation and the Gardner equation are qualitatively similar, differing only by a small phase lag due to differences in the dispersion term.
