The primary intervention is hearing aids (HAs); however, HA acceptance and usage stay low and the psychological mechanisms of HL adaptation remain poorly understood. To address this knowledge gap, we developed a psychometric instrument to assess hearing-related adaptive strategies (AStra).

Material and methods: The study was administered via self-report in three different samples (online, paper-pencil, app-based). In total, 169 individuals with subjective HL (mean age 62.51 years; 49.11% female; 57.40% HA users) participated. We included coping measures, subjective HL and HA satisfaction to assess AStra's construct validity, and HA use for criterion-related validity.

Results: The AStra demonstrated robust psychometric properties, yielding a three-factor solution with strong internal consistency. AStra showed good construct validity with coping measures and was associated with HA use independently of traditional factors such as age and education.

Discussion: The results highlight AStra's utility in understanding hearing-related adaptive strategies and emphasize the proactive role of older adults when dealing with HL. Further research is needed on when, how, and why adaptive strategies are used.

Practical recommendations: Adaptive strategy use may be translated into behavioral interventions for people with HL.
","PeriodicalId":49345,"journal":{"name":"Zeitschrift Fur Gerontologie Und Geriatrie","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":1.0,"publicationDate":"2025-08-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"144976374","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"医学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The geriatric depression scale (GDS-15), the mini-mental status test (MMST), Barthel index and documented depression diagnoses at admission were recorded.

Results: Complete data were available for 286 patients and of these 36.8% showed noticeable depressive symptoms (GDS-15 > 5) but only 10.4% had a previous diagnosis of depression. There were no significant gender-specific differences. The MMST correlated negatively with the GDS-15 in women, while the Barthel Index showed no correlation.

Discussion: Depressive symptoms are common in geriatric settings. Gender differences may play a lesser role in older age. The lack of correlation between depressive symptoms and functional impairments but the partial correlation with cognitive impairments, points to the diagnostic challenge of age-related multimorbidity. The discrepancy between noticeable depressive symptoms and few documented diagnoses of depression indicates possible gaps in the prehospital detection and recording of depressive disorders.
","PeriodicalId":49345,"journal":{"name":"Zeitschrift Fur Gerontologie Und Geriatrie","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":1.0,"publicationDate":"2025-08-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"144976267","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"医学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

As initiating contact with existing support services is a barrier, the street work project \"Senior citizens visited by experts in the community\" (SAVE) was introduced. Since 2019 SAVE experts have been providing advice to older people who are in public spaces and appear to be in need of support. The aim of our study was to examine the implementation of SAVE to identify recommendations for action.

Method: The SAVE evaluation is based on a mixed methods multistage design with a participatory approach. Firstly, secondary data (SAVE statistics, project documents) were analyzed. In addition, participant observations (n = 4), a focus group (n = 6) and interviews with SAVE experts (n = 4) and ASZ managers (n = 5) were conducted. To integrate the data the respective results were compared, triangulated and jointly interpreted.

Results: According to the statistics (period: January 2020-June 2023) the project reached 1546 people (57% women, 2847 contacts). Common problems identified included physical and mental illnesses, financial difficulties and loneliness. The derived recommendations for action address the following topics: SAVE requirements profile, basic equipment, implementation, orientation phase, public awareness and collegial cooperation.

Conclusion: The SAVE project offers an innovative way of reaching older people in their community by providing information, building relationships, giving on-site counselling and providing additional support. It was founded in 1985 to position geriatrics in science and policy, to disseminate knowledge, to establish a geriatric specialist status and to establish an independent field of geriatric medicine in diagnostics, treatment and rehabilitation. How did it achieve these goals? For this three methods were used: (1) semi-structured and open interviews (n = 28), (2) a very comprehensive source study with identification of 4 milestones based on historical ethnography, and (3) a content analysis of all protocols of general meetings (n = 36) over 40 years. The DGG has achieved nearly all of its goals, and more. It has independently developed evidence in the areas of nutrition, geriatric traumatology and assessment. Through its excellent international network, scientific excellence can be found within the DGG; however, the goal of establishing a geriatric specialist has not been achieved. Only a specialist area such as geriatrics within the DGG can meet the complex needs of older people.
","PeriodicalId":49345,"journal":{"name":"Zeitschrift Fur Gerontologie Und Geriatrie","volume":" ","pages":"405-424"},"PeriodicalIF":1.0,"publicationDate":"2025-08-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC12321663/pdf/","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"144692138","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"医学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
