Sex-based and side-to-side comparisons, as well as correlations with age, were also investigated for these proximal femoral angle measurements. MATERIAL AND METHODS After exclusion of patients with trauma, infection, prior surgery, advanced osteoarthritis, femoroacetabular impingement, avascular necrosis, coxa vara, coxa valga, and low-quality magnetic resonance images, 631 pairs of proximal femurs were retrospectively evaluated for FIA and MPFA measurements. All measurements were performed by consensus between 2 radiologists, then analyzed regarding sex and side differences and correlations with age. RESULTS The mean FIA was 128.53±4.62°, whereas the mean MPFA was 86.62±3.40°. No significant differences were observed between men and women (FIA: P=0.057, MPFA: P=0.050) or between right and left sides (FIA: P=0.178, MPFA: P=0.853). Age was not significantly correlated with either proximal femoral angle measurement. No significant association was found between age and FIA (right: P=0.554, left: P=0.321) or MPFA (right: P=0.954, left: P=0.935). CONCLUSIONS This large MRI-based study provides normative reference values for FIA and MPFA. Neither angle was significantly influenced by sex, side, or age, suggesting that these parameters remain relatively stable across adult populations. These findings may serve as useful reference values for assessment of proximal femoral morphology and preoperative orthopedic planning.
","PeriodicalId":48888,"journal":{"name":"Medical Science Monitor","volume":"32 ","pages":"e953394"},"PeriodicalIF":2.5,"publicationDate":"2026-09-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC13580174/pdf/","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"148945895","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"医学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Glutathione and homocysteine have been proposed as potential markers of oxidative stress involvement in mood disorders. MATERIAL AND METHODS We retrospectively analyzed clinical data and collected serum samples from 54 patients with treatment-resistant depression (46.3% with major depressive disorder, 53.7% with bipolar disorder) who had undergone a series of bilateral ECT. Serum concentrations of glutathione and homocysteine were measured before and after treatment. Patients were anesthetized with thiopental or thiopental combined with ketamine. Clinical improvement was assessed using the 17-item Hamilton Depression Rating Scale. RESULTS ECT significantly reduced Hamilton Depression Rating Scale scores (P<0.0001). No significant changes were observed in serum glutathione or homocysteine concentrations after treatment, and no correlations were found between biomarker levels and clinical response, remission, or anesthetic type. However, patients with bipolar disorder showed consistently higher glutathione levels than those with unipolar disorder (P<0.05). CONCLUSIONS Neither homocysteine nor glutathione levels were associated with ECT response, suggesting limited utility of these markers as predictors of clinical outcome. Elevated glutathione in patients with bipolar disorder may suggest potential biological differences between mood disorder subtypes; however, further prospective studies are required to confirm this observation. Further studies are needed to clarify the clinical significance of oxidative stress markers in ECT.
","PeriodicalId":48888,"journal":{"name":"Medical Science Monitor","volume":"32 ","pages":"e952203"},"PeriodicalIF":2.5,"publicationDate":"2026-09-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC13580163/pdf/","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"148931358","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"医学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This retrospective study aimed to depict the characteristics of 793 children aged 0 to 14 years admitted to Ordos Central Hospital, China, between 2014 and 2024 with acute poisoning, including accidental and intentional cases. MATERIAL AND METHODS Using the hospital information system and International Classification of Diseases standard coding ICD-10 codes T36-T65, we retrospectively reviewed medical records of children hospitalized for acute poisoning between January 2014 and December 2024. Data collected included age, sex, toxic substances, route of exposure, location, intent, and outcomes. RESULTS A total of 793 cases were included (362 boys, 431 girls). The mean age was 6.76 ± 5.02 years. Age distribution showed a bimodal pattern with peaks at 3 years or younger (329 cases, 41.5%) and 10 to 14 years (295 cases, 37.2%). Cases remained stable between 2014 and 2021 but increased significantly between 2022 and 2024, primarily due to increased cases in the 10- to 14-year age group. Drug poisoning was the most common cause (516 cases, 65.1%). Ingestion was the predominant route (90.3%). Most incidents occurred at home (91.2%). All patients aged 6 years and younger experienced accidental poisoning, while 78.6% of cases aged 10 to 14 years involved intentional ingestion. Five patients died (0.6%). Psychosocial interventions are fundamental components of evidence-based care for AUD and play a critical role in promoting abstinence, reducing harmful alcohol consumption, preventing relapse, and improving psychosocial functioning. Despite the availability of several established therapeutic approaches, comprehensive syntheses comparing their effectiveness, mechanisms of action, and emerging applications remain limited. This narrative review synthesizes recent evidence on major psychotherapeutic interventions for AUD, including Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Motivational Interviewing (MI), Contingency Management (CM), Mindfulness-Based Relapse Prevention (MBRP), Twelve-Step Facilitation (TSF), and Behavioral Couples Therapy (BCT). Current evidence suggests that combined treatment modalities, particularly MI integrated with CBT, demonstrate superior outcomes in reducing alcohol consumption and enhancing treatment engagement. CBT is effective across the full spectrum of AUD severity; CM facilitates rapid initiation of abstinence through reinforcement strategies; TSF promotes sustained recovery by strengthening social support and participation in mutual-help programs; MBRP is particularly beneficial for individuals with heightened stress reactivity and relapse vulnerability; and BCT improves drinking outcomes and relationship functioning. Emerging developments include digital and mobile health interventions, integration of psychosocial therapies with pharmacological treatment, precision medicine approaches tailored to individual patient characteristics, and expanded implementation in low- and middle-income countries. This review aims to evaluate the effectiveness of psychosocial interventions on abstinence rates and other alcohol-related outcomes in individuals with AUD while highlighting current evidence, clinical applications, and future directions for optimizing treatment.
","PeriodicalId":48888,"journal":{"name":"Medical Science Monitor","volume":"32 ","pages":"e952777"},"PeriodicalIF":2.5,"publicationDate":"2026-09-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC13576473/pdf/","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"148921495","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"医学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Olfactory disorders are often caused by viral infections, including SARS-CoV-2. The aim of the study was to evaluate the effectiveness of a structured, multidisciplinary rehabilitation program, including pharmacological treatment and speech therapy-guided olfactory training, in patients with post-COVID olfactory disorders. MATERIAL AND METHODS A total of 75 patients (15 men, 60 women) were allocated to a study group (n=50) or control group (n=25) using a systematic assignment method. Both groups received the same pharmacological treatment (intranasal corticosteroids and topical vitamin A), saline nasal irrigation, and elements of speech therapy-guided olfactory training. In addition, the study group performed classical olfactory training using 4 odorants twice daily. Olfactory function was assessed using the Sniffin' Sticks Test (SST). RESULTS For the total SST score, the mean change before and after intervention in the study group was 7.9 points (P<0.001). In the control group, the mean change was 2.8 points (P=0.006). CONCLUSIONS Classical olfactory training was associated with greater improvement in post-COVID olfactory disorders compared with pharmacological treatment supplemented with speech therapy-guided olfactory training alone. The observed effects may be related to the combined use of intranasal corticosteroids, topical vitamin A, and saline nasal irrigation; however, the individual contribution of these interventions cannot be determined. However, updated epidemiological data on osteoporosis prevalence and risk factors among community-dwelling older adults remain limited. This study aimed to investigate the prevalence of osteoporosis and identify its associated risk factors in community-dwelling older people in Eastern China. MATERIAL AND METHODS A community-based cross-sectional study was conducted among 2533 adults aged 65 years and older in Hangzhou, China, between February and December 2023. Bone mineral density at the lumbar spine, femoral neck, and total hip was measured using dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry. Osteoporosis was defined as a T score ≤-2.5 at any site according to WHO criteria. Demographic characteristics, lifestyle factors (smoking, alcohol consumption, physical activity), and medical history (diabetes, hypertension) were collected through standardized questionnaires. Multivariable logistic regression was employed to identify independent risk factors for osteoporosis. RESULTS The overall prevalence of osteoporosis was 32.8% (95% CI: 31.0%-34.6%), with significantly higher prevalence in women than in men (48.3% vs 15.2%, P<0.001). Prevalence increased progressively with age, from 24.6% in those aged 60 to 69 years to 45.7% in those aged ≥80 years (P for trend <0.001). Multivariable analysis revealed that female sex (OR=4.82, 95% CI: 3.91-5.94), advanced age (OR=1.58 per 10-year increase, 95% CI: 1.38-1.81), low body mass index (BMI <18.5 kg/m²; OR=2.36, 95% CI: 1.58-3.52), and physical inactivity (OR=1.54, 95% CI: 1.18-2.01) were independently associated with increased osteoporosis risk. Diabetes and hypertension showed no significant association after multivariable adjustment. CONCLUSIONS Osteoporosis affects nearly one-third of community-dwelling older adults in Eastern China, with particularly high burden among women and the oldest-old. Low BMI and physical inactivity emerged as important modifiable associated factors. These findings suggest potential targets for communitybased screening and lifestyle programs, although causal inferences cannot be drawn from this crosssectional design.
","PeriodicalId":48888,"journal":{"name":"Medical Science Monitor","volume":"32 ","pages":"e953854"},"PeriodicalIF":2.5,"publicationDate":"2026-09-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC13570575/pdf/","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"148907508","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"医学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

MATERIAL AND METHODS The replacement group (n=49) received digital customized 3D-printed partial talus replacement surgery, and the arthrodesis group (n=53) underwent ankle arthrodesis. Efficacy of the 2 surgical methods was evaluated by comparing the American Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society (AOFAS) ankle-hindfoot score, pain visual analog scale (VAS), ankle range of motion (ROM), SF-36 quality of life scale, and complication rate before surgery and at last follow-up. RESULTS At final follow-up, the observation group showed significantly better outcomes than the conventional group in AOFAS score (85.88±3.56 vs 78.51±4.12, P<0.001), ankle ROM (48.31°±4.95° vs 0.91°±1.13°, P<0.001), and the SF-36 Physical Component Summary (74.12±4.10 vs 55.83±4.96, P<0.001) and Mental Component Summary (81.26±5.12 vs 68.15±5.93, P<0.001). VAS scores were also significantly lower in the observation group (1.71±0.71 vs 2.57±0.87, P<0.001). Overall complication rates were similar (8.1% vs 11.3%, P=0.592); however, the reoperation rate was lower in the observation group (0% vs 3.7%). CONCLUSIONS In early follow-up, 3D-printed partial talus replacement for extensive talus necrosis demonstrates superior joint function, ROM, and quality of life compared with ankle arthrodesis, without increasing complications, suggesting it is a safe and effective joint-preserving alternative.
","PeriodicalId":48888,"journal":{"name":"Medical Science Monitor","volume":"32 ","pages":"e953450"},"PeriodicalIF":2.5,"publicationDate":"2026-09-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC13560756/pdf/","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"148898240","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"医学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
