These crises are deeply interconnected and shaped by varied food system dynamics, including the prioritization of large-scale, inexpensive food production, at the cost of externalized environmental and human health impacts. Climate change is expected to further exacerbate these challenges. Agroecological systems are increasingly promoted as a viable solution toward more resilient, nutritious, sustainable, and climate-adaptive food systems. However, the mechanisms linking biodiversity and climate sensitive management practices with potential nutritional contributions in these food production systems remain underexplored. In agroecosystems, the functional diversity of ecological traits supports resilience to disturbance and food security, while the functional diversity of nutritional traits influences the system's nutritional potential to support nutritional adequacy and human health. Using a trait-based framework, we quantified ecological and nutritional functional diversity in 48 Indigenous agroforests in Fiji. We found that agroforests with higher ecological functional diversity of response traits exhibit significantly greater nutritional functional diversity, suggesting that managing for ecological resilience may also enhance the nutritional potential of food production systems. These findings offer a novel empirical bridge between ecological function and nutrient provisioning, and highlight the importance of maintaining agrobiodiversity to support both environmental and human health in efforts to transform global food systems.</div></div>","PeriodicalId":48741,"journal":{"name":"Global Food Security-Agriculture Policy Economics and Environment","volume":"46 ","pages":"Article 100870"},"PeriodicalIF":9.8,"publicationDate":"2025-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"144662700","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":1,"RegionCategory":"经济学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The purpose of this study is to analyze the causal relation between social capital and food insecurity. We have addressed potential endogeneity issues using access variables as instrumental variables and employed a recursive bivariate probit model to analyze the relation between social capital and food insecurity across three illustrative cases. We utilized a unique dataset comprising 72,056 households, which includes questionnaires on food insecurity and social capital. For the first time, we were able to assess the causal relation between social capital and food insecurity, finding that social capital reduces food insecurity by 23–25 percentage points. Our findings aim to inform and support the expansion of social capital-based food policies as a strategy to mitigate food insecurity. Moreover, we argue that a larger dataset would need to include food insecurity and social capital questionnaires to provide new insights to reduce food insecurity. Finally, we argue that larger datasets should include both food insecurity and social capital modules to generate new insights for reducing food insecurity.</div></div>","PeriodicalId":48741,"journal":{"name":"Global Food Security-Agriculture Policy Economics and Environment","volume":"46 ","pages":"Article 100882"},"PeriodicalIF":9.6,"publicationDate":"2025-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"145094955","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":1,"RegionCategory":"经济学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The study also analyses the discrepancy between women's formal rights to land and the reality on the ground and dives deeper in uncovering the factors that contribute to their effective attainment. The evidence shows that, globally, women continue to lag behind men in ownership and secure rights over land in both the law and practice. Joint land registration, participation in household and community decision-making in relation to land, equal inheritance and ensuring that the principle of non-discrimination and gender equality applies to customary law are all pivotal in advancing women's land rights. The findings reveal that women are consistently more likely than men to experience food insecurity, even after controlling for income, employment, education, and other factors. Moreover women, rural areas and younger adults, particularly those aged 15–24 and 25–34, have been disproportionately affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. A macro-level analysis estimates that closing gender gaps in farm productivity and wages in agrifood systems could increase global GDP by nearly USD 1 trillion and reduce food insecurity for around 45 million people. At the micro-level, eliminating gender disparities in education, income, and labour-force participation could close 52 percent of the gender gap in food insecurity, with the remaining gap driven structural inequalities and discriminatory gender norms. These findings underscore the urgent need for gender-responsive policies to achieve the Sustainable Development Goal 2 on Zero Hunger.</div></div>","PeriodicalId":48741,"journal":{"name":"Global Food Security-Agriculture Policy Economics and Environment","volume":"45 ","pages":"Article 100850"},"PeriodicalIF":9.8,"publicationDate":"2025-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"143791762","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":1,"RegionCategory":"经济学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, there is currently little evidence systematically quantifying these benefits. In this paper, we synthesize quantitative information on the impacts of digital information interventions, which may integrate human support, on adoption of modern farm inputs (fertilizer and improved seeds), yield, and income, covering interventions implemented between 2005 and 2019. Our starting point for the meta-analysis was the Agriculture in the Digital Age Evidence Gap Map dataset, which provided a consistent set of studies of digital interventions, though one limitation is that it excludes more recent studies published after 2021. After applying our criteria for relevance, rigor, and availability of necessary data, we used estimates from 20 studies in our analyses where fifteen were from Sub-Saharan Africa, four from India, and one from Cambodia. Mean impacts of digital information interventions on adoption of fertilizer (+23 %; 95 % CI +6 % to +40 %), yield (+6 %; +2 % to +9 %), and income (+6 %; +2 % to +9 %) are positive while effects on adoption of improved seeds were not statistically significant. Although our analysis indicates that digital farmer services have provided benefits on average, there is considerable variability in estimates across individual studies. However, there are not enough comparable quantitative observations from the literature included within our study population to reliably further disaggregate estimated impacts (e.g., by intervention, level of human assistance, geography, modality of information delivery, farmer type). Expansion of the available evidence base to facilitate quantification of these heterogeneous impacts is needed to better inform program design to maximize effectiveness.</div></div>","PeriodicalId":48741,"journal":{"name":"Global Food Security-Agriculture Policy Economics and Environment","volume":"45 ","pages":"Article 100866"},"PeriodicalIF":9.8,"publicationDate":"2025-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"144222119","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":1,"RegionCategory":"经济学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, to what extent such games capture multiple food system components has yet to be established. We therefore conducted a systematic review of the literature on multiple food system component coverage in games and to assess their potential use in guiding sustainable food system transformation. We found 19 games that covered at least two food system components, of which eight addressed sustainable food system outcomes. Two of these games had the potential of covering rather all food system components and allowing reflection on economic, societal and environmental outcomes. Other games did not cover all components but did make either strong connections between the ones that were included or linked outcomes to multiple sustainability dimensions. For use in food system transformation, most games showed potential in transforming mindsets of a niche group of food system actors. However, only two could be played with a diverse group of stakeholders, of which one could additionally be applied in the political landscape. Future research should focus on further capturing system complexity within games to support imagining and evaluating effects of various strategies. By playing these games with different stakeholders, they could then have the potential to address the plurality of perspectives, cross disciplines and co-create strategies needed for food system transformation.</div></div>","PeriodicalId":48741,"journal":{"name":"Global Food Security-Agriculture Policy Economics and Environment","volume":"45 ","pages":"Article 100864"},"PeriodicalIF":9.8,"publicationDate":"2025-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"144222203","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":1,"RegionCategory":"经济学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Nonetheless, existing policies primarily target the health and agricultural sectors, overlooking potential benefits of financial sector development. We aim to fill this gap through a case study, relying on primary collected saving and food security data from smallholder farmers in Mali. By using ordinary least square models as well as an instrumental variable approach, we analyze the associations between farmers’ saving instruments and food security. We focus on four different saving instruments, including formal mechanisms such as bank accounts, semi-formal mechanisms such as mobile money, and informal mechanisms such as saving in secret hiding places, and with a trusted person. These four instruments are common in Mali and across Sub-Saharan Africa. The findings reveal heterogeneity in the choice of saving instruments and amounts and food security. Our contribution aims to inform decision makers on designing policies at the nexus of finance and agriculture, which is crucial for addressing the vulnerability of smallholder farmers. Since the severe nutritional situation in Mali is indicative of a crisis-affected region, our findings might be applicable to other countries in Sub-Saharan Africa as well.</div></div>","PeriodicalId":48741,"journal":{"name":"Global Food Security-Agriculture Policy Economics and Environment","volume":"45 ","pages":"Article 100847"},"PeriodicalIF":9.8,"publicationDate":"2025-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"143725435","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":1,"RegionCategory":"经济学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Closing gender gaps and increasing women's empowerment in agrifood systems is critical to achieving a broad range of objectives, including Sustainable Development Goals 1, 2, 5 and 10. Much of the literature on women's empowerment in agriculture and agrifood systems focuses on its benefits in terms of agricultural production, dietary diversity, child nutrition and women's nutrition. However, there is limited evidence on the impact of women's empowerment on outcomes related to livelihoods and resilience to shocks -- two key elements that drive improvements in the livelihoods of small-scale producers and help to further justify the importance of investing in women's empowerment to achieve development outcomes. This paper aims to bridge this gap by examining how women's empowerment within development projects in the agriculture and rural development sectors affects household livelihood outcomes including income, food security/nutrition and resilience. Utilizing a comprehensive dataset from the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) across 23 countries worldwide, we assess the role of empowering women in improving livelihoods for their households. Our analysis employs a dual approach: a meta-level evaluation focusing on project outcomes and a household-level analysis aggregating data from 21 of the 23 countries available. Results from both analytical methods reveal significant benefits to livelihood outcomes, including enhanced household income and resilience, where women report increased empowerment. This suggests that women's empowerment is a key area of investments for rural development and prosperity.</div></div>","PeriodicalId":48741,"journal":{"name":"Global Food Security-Agriculture Policy Economics and Environment","volume":"45 ","pages":"Article 100856"},"PeriodicalIF":9.8,"publicationDate":"2025-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"143839468","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":1,"RegionCategory":"经济学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
