Literature relating to burnout among the helping professions is reviewed. Causes and symptoms of burnout are applied to the field of special education. The author points out how special education teachers are subjected to varying degrees of occupational stress that can result in burnout. Some suggestions are given for preventing burnout. The results clearly imply that (a) many aspects of the law are creating stress for educators; (b) clear role expectations and frequency of P.L. 94-142 compliance by a school system can be stress factors; and (c) there are various stress conditions related to the law that are impinging on educators.
