In addition to understanding barriers to PrEP initiation, it is imperative that we also understand patterns of adherence and persistence on PrEP among young, Black GBMSM who have started PrEP. Understanding factors associated with PrEP adherence and persistence will facilitate the development of interventions to encourage effective PrEP use. We conducted a study to examine the feasibility and acceptability of using frequent, online, self-administered surveys to assess recent sexual behavior and PrEP use over six months among young, Black GBMSM on PrEP. Participants completed brief surveys weekly for three months followed by monthly surveys through month six. They were also asked to submit a self-collected dried blood spot to provide a biological measure of PrEP adherence at months three and six. Feasibility was measured via completion percentages for the surveys and dried blood spot collection; acceptability was measured via qualitative data collected during in-depth interviews. Overall, 71% of participants completed at least 80% of study surveys and 64% returned at least one dried blood spot specimen. Most study procedures were reported to be acceptable, although some participants did have some difficulties using the study app to complete surveys. Short, frequent, self-administered surveys and self-collected dried blood spots were found to be feasible and acceptable methods to measure PrEP adherence and persistence among young, Black GBMSM and might form the basis for future adherence interventions.
","PeriodicalId":48075,"journal":{"name":"Current Psychology","volume":"44 7","pages":"6421-6429"},"PeriodicalIF":2.6,"publicationDate":"2025-04-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC13061386/pdf/","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"147646878","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"心理学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Yet, cognitive assessments outside of laboratory settings and the relevance of perceived reasons for discrimination require additional attention. The present work addressed associations between discrimination and ambulatory cognitive performance (i.e., spatial working memory, short-term memory binding, processing speed) in ecological settings among older Black and White adults enrolled in the Einstein Aging Study. Consistent with past laboratory-based research, Black adults exhibited worse ambulatory cognitive performance and reported more frequent discrimination compared to White adults. Racially stratified analyses examined characteristics (i.e., number and type) of the perceived reasons for discrimination as moderators in relation to discrimination frequency and cognition. For Black adults who endorsed zero or one reason for discrimination compared to those who endorsed multiple reasons, discrimination frequency was associated with worse spatial working memory. Additionally, among Black participants who did not attribute discrimination to their race compared to those who endorsed racial discrimination, discrimination frequency related to worse spatial working memory. For White adults, cognitive performance was largely unrelated to discrimination frequency and characteristics. Findings highlight the value of examining discrimination and cognition in daily life, and the importance of assessing characteristics of discriminatory experiences within racial groups.
","PeriodicalId":48075,"journal":{"name":"Current Psychology","volume":"44 6","pages":"4268-4281"},"PeriodicalIF":2.6,"publicationDate":"2025-03-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC12956292/pdf/","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"147357011","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"心理学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this correlational study, we aimed to elucidate the relationship between self-concealment and three dimensions of secrecy: the use of secrecy, the ability to keep secrets, and attitude toward secrecy. The sample consisted of 220 individuals (76% identified as female), between the ages of 18 to 78 (M = 24.27, SD = 8.88). Participants completed an online survey which included the Self-Concealment Scale (SCS), the Common Secrecy Questionnaire (CSQ) and the newly developed Secrecy Ability Scale (SAB) and Secrecy Attitude Scale (SAT). Data were screened to mitigate both positive and negative response biases. The results revealed that high self-concealers tend to keep more secrets and have a more positive attitude toward secrecy compared to low self-concealers. In this study, we examined the effect of different levels of shared Sense of Agency (s-SoA) with own team members and the type of moral dispositions on the tendency to deceive outgroups. To this end, we developed an online version of the Tone Tapping Task (TTT) to modulate s-SoA through partner predictability. Next, we run a within-subject experiment where 72 participants experienced a weak or strong s-SoA with their partner and then played the Multi-player Temptation to Lie Card Game, a moral task we devised to capture participants' decisions to lie to increase their team's monetary reward. Participants were presented with either favorable (own team win) or unfavorable (other team win) scenarios leading to low, medium, or high reward levels. Our analyses did not show a modulation of deceptive behavior based on the objective partner's predictability. However, we found that lower s-SoA ratings with the partner and lower group-oriented \"binding\" morality were associated with an increased frequency of outgroup-favouring lies for lower rewards. Furthermore, participants with higher scores in dispositional \"binding\" morality showed a positive correlation between s-SoA levels and the likelihood of committing ingroup-favoring lies. These results contribute to existing frameworks by integrating Moral Foundations Theory with research on shared sense of agency, highlighting how subjective experiences of coordination can enhance the effect of group-centered moral tendencies.

Supplementary information: The online version contains supplementary material available at 10.1007/s12144-025-08026-0.
","PeriodicalId":48075,"journal":{"name":"Current Psychology","volume":"44 24","pages":"18638-18654"},"PeriodicalIF":2.6,"publicationDate":"2025-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC12664842/pdf/","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"145656040","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"心理学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It hypothesises that choice will act as a trigger for situational interest, impacting engagement with the reading text, and will therefore improve children's performance in a reading comprehension task, and promote higher levels of enjoyment for that task. Participants were 110 Grade 3 pupils (61 boys, 49 girls). Reading comprehension performance and task enjoyment were measured in a cross-over, repeated measures design where children were either allocated a short story or offered a perceived choice of story to read. In fact, all children read the same story in each condition. Reading comprehension scores and post-test reported enjoyment scores were gathered and analysed. Choice was found to significantly affect comprehension scores (Cohen's d = 0.52) and reported task enjoyment (Cohen's d = 0.23), indicating that choice impacts engagement with a reading text. Effects did not vary by gender or ability. Reading motivation promoted by situational interest may play an important role in reading comprehension and choice may be an effective trigger for situational interest in a reading task and a powerful intrinsic motivator. The present research was a pilot study evaluating its effects on mood states in university students. Specifically, it examined if the Soothe Vision tool (intervention group) was more effective than viewing the soothing images from Project Soothe alone (control group) in producing positive mood changes. This study was conducted online with 151 Chinese university students (age M = 22.77; SD = 0.23) both in and outside China. Standardised measures were used to assess the symptoms of depression, anxiety, personality traits and loneliness at the baseline phase. Changes in mood states were measured before and after the intervention. Repeated measure ANOVAs indicated that both groups showed reduced negative mood states (i.e., negative affect, depressive and anxious mood) and an increased serenity affect; however, there were no group differences. Correlation analyses suggested that higher levels of depressive and anxiety symptoms at baseline were associated with a greater reduction in depressive and anxious mood. Participants with a higher neuroticism score reported larger reductions in anxious mood states. These preliminary findings suggest that imagery-based tools/interventions can be beneficial in increasing positive mood and reducing negative mood in students, particularly in those with higher levels of baseline depressive and anxiety symptoms as well as those with higher vulnerability by virtue of neuroticism.

Supplementary information: The online version contains supplementary material available at 10.1007/s12144-025-07649-7.
","PeriodicalId":48075,"journal":{"name":"Current Psychology","volume":"44 10","pages":"9112-9128"},"PeriodicalIF":2.5,"publicationDate":"2025-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC12144047/pdf/","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"144250326","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"心理学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
