Effective teaching methods and pedagogical strategies significantly enhance English skills through active learning, problem-solving, and technology utilization. These strategies require pedagogical competence, including Information and Communication Technology (ICT) proficiency and quality instruction, and facilitate continuous assessment. Prior studies indicate positive correlations between pedagogical competence and language proficiency, subject performance, and numeracy skills. This research explores the impact of teaching and learning methods on students' English language proficiency and learning outcomes. Linear regression analyses reveal Teaching Aspect's positive influence on English Proficiency (coef: 0.1687, p-value: 8.82E-13), Enhancing Learning (coef: 0.1226, p-value: 5.18E-13), and Supporting Learning Process (coef: 0.04608, p-value: 0.00062). Learning Method significantly affects English Proficiency (coef: 0.5263, p-value: 1.92E-14), Enhancing Learning (coef: 0.3693, p-value: 1.66E-13), and Supporting Learning Process (coef: 0.15702, p-value: 7.05E-05). The semiotic aspects and cases are exciting topics to discuss in interpreting the meaning of advertising because the ambiguous message conveyed in the advertisement may cause difficulties in understanding its meaning among the customers. This research aims to discover the connotative and denotative meanings of the signs in the iPhone 14 series advertising videos. This study is qualitative research. The data sources used in this study are six advertising videos, which consisted of five video advertisements that aired in September 2022 and one video advertisement that aired in January 2023 on YouTube. The data were analyzed with verbal and nonverbal signs according to Saussure's theory (1950) in the form of words, phrases, sentences, sounds, situations, models, motion, and video images of iPhone 14 series advertisements and then searched for connotative and denotative meanings according to Barthes' theory (1983). From all of those connotative meanings can be concluded that the myths of the iPhone 14 series are the latest feature of the iPhone 14 series that shows the sophistication of Apple’s product smartphone. Its luxurious design also makes all iPhone 14 owners proud to use it. The sophistication and luxurious design are a perfect combination that makes iPhone 14 an expensive smartphone. It also discusses the relevance of analyzing speech acts in understanding the intended meaning behind utterances. Previous studies on speech acts in Hemingway's works are mentioned, focusing on locution, illocution, and perlocution, or the form and meaning of speech acts. The research methodology employed in this study is descriptive-qualitative, involving the analysis of dialogue fragments from the short story. The data collection technique involves extracting relevant conversations from the story and categorizing them based on the speaker, hearer, topic, and setting. The analysis includes identifying the types of speech acts used, exploring their possible meanings, classifying them into five general functions (assertives, commissives, directives, expressives, and declaratives), and categorizing them based on sentence structure (declarative, interrogative, imperative, or exclamative). The findings and discussions section presents several examples of speech acts found in the short story, describing the locution, illocution, perlocution, and classifications of each speech act. The results demonstrate the diverse range of speech acts employed by the characters in \"The Killers\" and their impact on communication within the narrative.","PeriodicalId":479906,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of English and Applied Linguistics (IJEAL)","volume":"30 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-08-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"136065000","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
