The literature has assumed that political risk is avoidable for MNCs with specific political capabilities. We argue that political risk is inevitable. We posit that even if MNCs have political capabilities, host countries' political risk and its associated costs will not simply disappear. Extending the literature on political risk mitigation, we highlight the role of institutional-based tools in curbing political risk costs. Specifically, we posit that MNCs can reduce political risk costs through (i) international investment agreements, (ii) investment contracts with host governments, (iii) political risk insurance, and (iv) guarantees with binding enforcement mechanisms in unison with relying on political capabilities, thereby dampening the negative effect of uncontrollable host country political risk. We leverage the political-institutional approach to political risk and draw on relevant literature from law and IB to develop a framework to describe the conditions under which MNCs may use these institutional-based tools.</p></div>","PeriodicalId":47937,"journal":{"name":"Journal of International Management","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":6.1,"publicationDate":"2023-08-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"44935644","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":2,"RegionCategory":"管理学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We test and validate the conceptual model using survey data collected from 110 INVs operating in the developing market of Pakistan. Our results show that international CSR promotes the post-entry performance of developing market INVs. Further, we found that this association is moderated by corporate governance mechanisms of ownership, board independence, and returnee board members. Specifically, the relationship between international CSR and post-entry performance is weaker when ownership is concentrated but stronger when outsider and returnee board members are present in developing market INVs. While several scholars highlighted innovativeness as a driver of competitiveness for born global firms, the capacities underlying the born global firm's innovativeness have received limited scholarly attention, specifically, dynamic absorptive capacities (exploratory, transformative, and exploitative learning capacities). The uniqueness of this paper posits that dynamic absorptive capacities in a born global service firm have contributed to innovation and resulted in international market outcomes. The data was collected using the survey method from born global service firms and was analyzed using structured equation modeling. The findings of this study reveal that service innovation and business strategy are critical drivers of international performance for born global service firms. However, we still do not know in what other ways work settings may spill over to nonwork settings – especially for immigrant populations. To address this gap, we examine whether organizations might create spillovers that shape the way immigrants acculturate (i.e., the degree to which they adopt the mainstream national culture and/or retain the heritage culture) in their nonwork settings and the way through which this might occur. More precisely, we examine whether immigrants' perceived diversity climate in work settings is associated with immigrants' diversity beliefs, which might then influence immigrants' acculturation spillover beliefs and ultimately the way immigrants actually acculturate in their non-work settings. Using structural equation modeling with a sample of 428 Hispanic immigrants, we found that Hispanic immigrants' perceived diversity climate was positively associated with their diversity beliefs, which in turn were positively associated with their acculturation spillover beliefs vis-à-vis adopting the mainstream national culture, but not retaining the heritage culture, which in turn were positively associated with the actual adoption of the mainstream national culture and heritage culture retention in nonwork settings, respectively. We expand work-nonwork spillover research by integrating it with acculturation theory and suggesting the potential impact organizations may have on Hispanic immigrants' acculturation in nonwork settings.</p></div>","PeriodicalId":47937,"journal":{"name":"Journal of International Management","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":6.1,"publicationDate":"2023-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"44476127","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":2,"RegionCategory":"管理学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

With performance analysis, author network analysis, bibliographic coupling, and topic trend analysis, they identify its underlying intellectual structure and map its temporal, spatial, and thematic evolution. The analysis of 111 key journals and 668 articles, spanning more than three decades (1989–2022) comprises four distinct time periods and longitudinal trends that support meaningful visual representations of the bibliographic data. The findings reveal six foundational themes for offshoring research: (1) offshoring and global supply chains, (2) offshoring of IT/business processes, (3) outcomes of offshoring, (4) governance mechanisms in offshoring and success strategies, (5) drivers of offshoring, and (6) backshoring of manufacturing. The present study advances this line of research by applying theory on impression formation and Tuckman's team stages model to explore the varying relevance of surface-level and deep-level individual attributes on PPEs across the team's life, and specifically in the context of global virtual teams (GVTs). We used longitudinal data across ten weeks of 831 individuals from 34 countries working in 239 different GVTs. We found that surface-level attributes, such as age and home country reputation, affect PPEs in the early stages of the team project, while the deep-level attributes, such as cognitive ability and English language proficiency, influence PPEs in the late phase of a GVT's life. We also found that cultural intelligence impacts PPEs relatively early on, and emotional intelligence is only relevant for PPEs when the GVT hits critical turning points, while gender influences PPEs throughout the project. We discuss the theoretical and managerial implications of our findings and provide directions for future research on PPEs in GVTs.</p></div>","PeriodicalId":47937,"journal":{"name":"Journal of International Management","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":6.1,"publicationDate":"2023-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"46643066","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":2,"RegionCategory":"管理学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
