Such incremental approaches to managing innovation have merit, and can result in significant cumulative changes over time. However, the way in which such incremental innovation is resourced, organised and managed is fundamentally different to that for radical innovation, which is critical to address more significant commercial and social challenges. The cases of new product development (NPD) and business model innovation (BMI) are examined to identify the challenges researchers and managers face. We argue that to acquire a deeper understanding of how radical innovation works, more ambitious cross-disciplinary research is needed, rather than the current direction of travel in the literature towards single discipline studies and standard processes that apply primarily to incremental commercial innovations.","PeriodicalId":47711,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Innovation Management","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":2.1,"publicationDate":"2022-11-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"43229998","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Among various crowdsourcing types, online, team-based contest is one of the most prominent one. The objective of this study is to deepen the understanding of team-based crowdsourcing by exploring specifically the issues that characterise the innovation process of crowdsourcing in a virtual team setting. To empirically pursue this aim, we conducted an interview-based case study leveraging interviews of 106 solvers and 24 facilitators moderating the team of solvers, which have participated in contests through the IdeaConnection crowdsourcing platform. We found that five main issues characterise team-based crowdsourcing competitions: Platform support, Solvers skills, Solver motivation, Solutions, and Performance. Specifically, some of these issues are in line with previous literature investigating individual crowdsourcing competition, while others are novel highlighting the peculiarity of the virtual team setting.","PeriodicalId":47711,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Innovation Management","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":2.1,"publicationDate":"2022-10-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"48058649","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The aim is to design a model of organisational, economic and social-based practices to manage public-funded consortia, while taking into account the interaction among these practices as well as the moderating effects of relational risks. Relying on a sample of 232 firms involved in European public-funded consortia, our findings show that the selected managerial practices improve the consortium’s performance. However, the influence of public sponsorship influences the occurrence of relational risks and thereby the benefits of each practice. The implications of these findings are then discussed.","PeriodicalId":47711,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Innovation Management","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":2.1,"publicationDate":"2022-10-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"48430507","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To investigate the impact of using KMS on employee creative performance and help clarify the relevant contingencies that positively affect this relationship, the authors develop a theoretical model that links KMS usage with intrinsic and extrinsic motivation and creative process engagement and explore their contribution to employee creative performance. Using data from an online survey of 528 employees, the empirical results show that KMS usage raises employee creative performance. Moreover, intrinsic and extrinsic motivation and creative process engagement increase employee creative performance. However, the authors find no positive moderating impact of intrinsic and extrinsic motivation or creative process engagement on the KMS usage-employee creative performance relationship.","PeriodicalId":47711,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Innovation Management","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":2.1,"publicationDate":"2022-10-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"42394536","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

While some studies argue that open innovation (OI) might be beneficial in bridging the VoD, there is lack of consensus on whether and when OI is an enabler or hinder for the VoD. By reviewing literature on the intersection of these topics, this study identifies contexts when OI functions as enabler, e.g., by employing collaborative platforms or inter-industry collaborations, and also situations when OI may pose challenges in the VoD, e.g., highlighting opportunistic behaviour or conflicting perspectives of different partners. The study has theoretical and practical implications and identifies a number of avenues for future research.","PeriodicalId":47711,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Innovation Management","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":2.1,"publicationDate":"2022-10-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"48482226","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Our understanding of cognitive processes is, however, evolving, and research on the specific forms and role of these factors within innovation-related decisions is limited. We propose a theory of decision-making that offers consilience across research areas, is grounded in both physical and social sciences, explains the constructs already established by innovation, adoption and resistance research, and serves the needs of innovation researchers and practitioners as a pragmatic tool. Using a variety of established research tools in novel ways including semantic field and bibliometric analysis and by drawing on research from diverse disciplines, we identify evolved psychological mechanisms as influences on adoption decision processes. We conclude that Evolutionary Choice Theory, defined as the collective influence of these evolved psychological mechanisms, should be adopted by innovation practitioners and researchers and provide specific pragmatic applications to inform this adoption.","PeriodicalId":47711,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Innovation Management","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":2.1,"publicationDate":"2022-10-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"47147312","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In the VUCA (i.e., volatile, uncertain, complex, ambiguous) context, a problem-solving roadmap for business model innovation is particularly relevant. However, the process is far from being easy, and most research focusses on the organisational level of analysis. By building on the cognitive perspective of business model innovation, this study implements an action research methodology to develop a framework that aims to help entrepreneurs structure a business model innovation roadmap that entails the exploitation and exploration activities. The framework has three steps. The first step attempts to build consistency in the problems, strategic goals, and initiatives. The second clusters the initiatives around “Lighthouse Projects”. The last step establishes a timeline and an action plan.","PeriodicalId":47711,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Innovation Management","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":2.1,"publicationDate":"2022-10-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"48987706","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Strategic actors rely on their technological frames to interpret a specific technology and whether and how they can benefit from it, which can explain why there is heterogeneity in such technology-driven Business Model Innovation (BMI). However, the literature lacks a comprehensive understanding of this critical management tool because the emotional grounding of technological frames has not been examined. We conducted a qualitative case study research. Our results are based on 36 interviews. It turns out that emotions impact how people respond to digital technologies. These insights extend our understanding of technological frames as well as emotional framing and their mutual relationship and how this affects technology-driven BMI. In addition, we provide practical implications.","PeriodicalId":47711,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Innovation Management","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":2.1,"publicationDate":"2022-10-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"48947862","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this study, we adopt paradox theory to understand the balancing practices and requirements for digitalisation in healthcare. Based on gaps in previous research and practice, this paper aims to explore what characterises the different kinds of tensions and organisational paradoxes related to digital transformation. Also, this paper discusses how balancing practices in digital transformation are constrained and enabled. The paper is based on a project run in co-production between researchers at the Mälardalen University and project partners at a healthcare Region in Sweden. In the findings, two kinds of tensions are identified in digital transformation initiatives: Divergence at different organisational levels and competing demands between past, present and future needs. The divergent views are characterised by being latent while the competing demands are characterised by being salient to the organisation. This is followed by a discussion about balancing practices enabling digital ambidexterity and spurring virtuous cycles.","PeriodicalId":47711,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Innovation Management","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":2.1,"publicationDate":"2022-10-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"43064643","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To understand how appropriation can be continued over time, this study investigates and compares Bayer’s two innovations, Aspirin medicine and Roundup herbicide. Whereas for the first, appropriation success has been continued through decades, for the latter, such a continuum has not realised. Our findings suggest that long-lasting appropriation success lies in adjusting the appropriation strategy by identifying the most substantial appropriability premises for innovation (appropriability mechanisms and complementary assets) and the ways to use them in different situations, paying specific attention to the shifting appropriability conditions. For long-term success, it is critical for firms to recognise that isolating appropriability mechanisms and complementary assets can have varied and distinctive implications depending on the pertinent contextual factors at innovation level and to strategise accordingly.","PeriodicalId":47711,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Innovation Management","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":2.1,"publicationDate":"2022-10-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"45296455","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
