ISBN 9781250849663 $19.99 Reviewed from digital galleys R 4-8 yrs Young Bobo wakes up at the crack of dawn to spend time with Papa as they plan tonight's dinner with a special family dish: okra stew. Together, they pick vegetables out in the garden, throw nets to catch shrimp at the creek, and head back to the kitchen to prepare the delectable feast. While following other recipes for cornbread and rice to complement the stew, Papa recounts his youthful memories of Bobo's grandfather and great grandma, sharing with his son how traditional recipes and cooking utensils have been passed on from generation to generation. Daise's picture book celebrates the deep bond between father and son while also introducing readers to the beautiful and lively Gullah culture. The realistic art style, hand-painted paper collage, and textiles create an authentic representation of the Gullah Geechee's cultural practices that honor Bobo's elders and ancestors, from their sewed baskets to an old black skillet passed down from three generations. The composition and rhythmic text add energy to the melodious atmosphere; Bobo sings while retrieving ingredients, and vegetables and shrimp are readily chopped, sliced, and diced while grains of rice rain down into a pot. An expression of gratitude in the vein of Fry Bread (BCCB 11/19) and Adjepong's Sankofa: A Culinary Story of Resilience and Belonging, reviewed above, this will spur young viewers to gather around the table like Bobo and give thanks: \"Tenky for Grandpa, Mama, and Sis too. Tenky for Papa and okra stew!\" Back matter includes an author's note about Gullah Geechee culture and history, along with an okra stew recipe for everyone to enjoy. ISBN 9780063244887 $10.99 Reviewed from digital galleys R Gr. 4-6 Dare is certain that the story of how her father died—supposedly at the hands of rogue men rather than the monsters everyone insists no longer exist—is a complete lie, though she has no proof yet. When her new stepfather sends her off to a small island to live with a distant relative, Dare allows herself a short period of despair, as the move effectively shuts down her investigation and her connection with her mom in a world where letters by boat are as likely to disappear as reach their target. But once she bounces back with new determination to prove the continued existence of monsters, she uncovers not only evidence that explains what happened to her dad but also an entire web of torture and exploitation of monsters for their powers. While it is perhaps a cliche to point out that humans are nearly always the true monsters, even in a world of creatures who have remarkable abilities, Wishingrad allows the reader to come to that conclusion gradually, introducing multiple perspectives that may seem reasonable in turn, just as they did for Dare, who trusts the wrong people before finding her way. Dare is impulsive, a wild mix of defiance, refusal to be a respectable girl, and raw pain, and she sometimes gets in her own way as she draws lightning quick conclusions that often turn out to be flawed. Her hard-won growth, particularly after she accepts that she needs and deserves friends and allies after a childhood of feeling isolated, is tinged with tragedy but nonetheless reason to celebrate. No matter how much her serious artistic parents try to teach her how to paint perfect triangles or squares, Olive refuses to keep her art confined to shapes, and her teacher is also exasperated by Olive's artistic freestyle. Meanwhile, her classmates can't help but admire her art, and when they want to learn how to paint like her, Olive shows them how to embrace creativity and bring joyful chaos to the everyday. Cho creates a loveable and energetic protagonist who cultivates and defines her unique art style rather than following her parents' expectations and societal norms. The graphite monotone backgrounds depict the bland parents' art museum and the town's symmetric, rigid shapes while emphasizing Olive's individuality, as she is fully dressed in primary colors of red, blue, and yellow. Swirling, smooth textures of gouache, acrylic paints, and colored pencils add a cheerful atmosphere to the double-space spreads with Olive and her classmates quite literally painting the town, allowing readers to notice the positive impact of simply being yourself and doing what you love. With a delightful, surprising ending, this will make an easy pick for little artists to celebrate the joys and triumphs of creating art with no boundaries. ISBN 9780593526590 $10.99 Reviewed from digital galleys R Gr. 9-12 When a buzzy new docuseries returns attention to a fifty-year-old killing spree in San Diego, a small town in Arizona becomes the setting for a modern, queer reboot, with two gay besties—Cole Cardoso and Frankie Dearie—at its bloody [End Page 68] center. The original killer targeted the lonely and heartbroken violently enough to coerce desperate hookups and pity dating, and this time around, the M. O. is nearly identical, putting a high school Queer Club on alert, forcing some awkward coupling, and placing major suspicion on Cole and Dearie, two healthily horny outcasts. Cole, in particular, as a brown, proudly out gay boy with a sardonic wit and biting attitude, has had run-ins with Club members' sex-shaming and racist bullying before, so he's a person of interest as he has direct ties to the victims who start receiving the ominous texts that lead directly to barbed wire lynching within 24 hours. Dearie never once doubts the innocence of his sometimes little spoon, sometimes kissing partner, always sort of flirty best friend, but an obvious frame job accompanies the rising death toll, so the two are determined to solve the mystery while serving looks. The severity of the stakes at hand rarely stifles the rapport of the duo who are giving gay joy and resolve in the face of serial murder. The spotlight on queer loneliness, precarious and fatal, makes the relationships and humor even more potent as the murder mystery ultimately unwraps itself with Scream-esque surprises, revealing not just one killer, but an ambitious apprentice with a deeply personal agenda that the Final Gays may not see coming. K-3 Long ago, Tí's grandfather came to the marshes and jungles of southern Vietnam to make a new home. The land was and still can be wild and full of dangers, but [End Page 67] Grandfather hears music in the cacophony of the forest: \"This song is old, Tí. We listen, and the land responds with gifts.\" The settlers take part in the song when they cut bamboo to build homes, cultivate rice in the marshes, and take only what they need from the land to survive. Even when a storm tosses their small fishing boat, Grandfather hears the song, telling a frightened Tí that \"You do not have to shout down the storm. Find its rhythm; sing with it.\" With lyrical prose and immersive, stylized art, married author-illustrator team Phùng Nguyên Quang and Huýnh Kim Liên skillfully deliver the message of living in harmony with nature. Tí and Grandfather are portrayed as small figures in sweeping landscapes, dwarfed by the tigers, turtles, fish, and birds they live alongside, making up only a small part of the perilous but beautiful natural world they inhabit. The metaphor of music sustains Tí's relationship with his grandfather (Tí's voice \"weaves into the ballad around me, part of me\") through his coming of age to take part in his community as an adult, even when his grandfather is gone. This gentle story of family and living alongside nature is a shoo-in for an eco-themed storytime, but it's equally suited to celebrating kids' relationships with their grandparents. ISBN 9781665917193 $10.99 Reviewed from digital galleys R 3-7 yrs \"This tranquil picture book begins with a direct reminder to viewers: \"When you slow down . . . / you see more.\" Few words accompany the many small stories that play out in the following pages, with seasons changing with each page turn. From a fixed view high in the branches of a persimmon tree, viewers observe the antics of a rosy-cheeked boy and the puppy at his heels, the changes of the natural world around them, and the construction of a house not far from their own. Once the house is complete, the boy climbs the tree to pick the persimmons and share them with the little girl whose family moved into the new house. Simple lines and shapes and a muted color palette encourage viewers to slow down and take in the many small stories that unfold from one page to the next in Yuly's soft chalk pastel and cut paper collage artwork. A spider weaves its web, spring flowers bloom, leaves emerge on the branches, and a house is framed over the foundation as a bird builds its nest high above. The use of perspective over the two-page spreads is highly effective, showing an expansive, serene overlook that flips in the final scene, with the persimmon tree appearing in full as the two children look out at it from a backyard tent. This gentle story invites readers to a quiet lapsit where adult and kiddo can trace each vignette through the book together. With time, trust, and guidance from her father, however, Yusra grew up to swim in international competitions and dreamed of competing in the Olympics. As war erupted in Syria, Yusra's life in her home country became too dangerous for activities like school and swimming, so she and [End Page 56] her sister began the long journey to seek refuge in Germany. The sisters were forced to sneak into Europe on a boat that was meant for six but held twenty—when the boat's motor inevitably quit, Yusra and others jumped into the water to help swim the vessel to safety. Faruqi's cogent present-tense narrative summarizes Yusra's refugee-to-Olympian story with short sentences that accentuate the tale's tension, while the refrain, \"One breath at a time\" anchors readers as they follow the teen's astonishing journey. Cheerfully hued watercolor and gouache illustrations provide levity to a serious tale, and a pivotal image of Yusra in her \"blue cocoon\" of safety under the water of a swimming pool juxtaposes her unique strengths with the danger of her later circumstances. Concluding pages highlight Yusra's current refugee advocacy work as an ambassador for the United Nations; end matter includes a timeline and map of Yusra's journey and notes from the author and illustrator. First, the butterfly must welcome the world: \"Hello rustle! / Hello glimmer! / Goodbye darkness / and hello light!\" But before being a butterfly, the narrator explains that \"you must be a chrysalis\" and weather the elements until it's time to hatch. Before that, a caterpillar must: \"Never use a fork / and never use a spoon, / and always lick / the itty-bitty leaf crumbs / from your itty-bitty thumbs.\" Still before that, an egg clinging to a leaf, dreaming of the world to come, and even before that, a butterfly again. Văn's dreamy, lyrical text depicts this scientific process in all its wonder, making this an accessible way for kids to learn about—and appreciate the [End Page 74] amazing nature of—the cycle of a butterfly's life. Armstrong's vibrant, cartoonish digital art gives rich colors to the magical sunsets and blue-green nights; the butterfly has big, goofy eyes as it welcomes the world and the caterpillar has an appropriately grumpy pudginess, all of which add to the wondrous feeling of the narrative. A fuller and slightly more scientific explanation is included at the end, ensuring that kids can apply the magic of this book to the science, with better understanding of what happens between the stages of a butterfly's existence. Sir Julian [End Page 77] only pretends to eat the healthy, icky, green ooze by feeding it to his dog underneath the table, but after bedtime, his tummy predictably continues to roar. Sir Julian has no choice but to take his trusty cloak, sword, and teddy bear companion and venture off into his dim castle to search for a scrumptious snack. Clever narration with puns, onomatopoeia, and alliteration support Sir Julian's imagined self as a brave and noble knight as he gathers the courage to pierce through the darkness with his mighty sword and charges into the kitchen. The humorous and overdramatic digital art illustrations portray Sir Julian's fearful expressions and body language as he scurries to a light switch, creeps to the privy chamber (aka the bathroom), and runs away from shadowy enemies in the hallways. Readers will feel his devastation on a double-page spread with kitchen cabinets in disarray and no snacks in sight, thus watching with anticipation as the faithful knight faces his greatest foe of leftover fondue. \"But hunger was like a ferocious, five-horned, fire-breathing dragon,\" and Sir Julian conquers the beast with a bite of green goo, only to realize it isn't half bad. ISBN 9781338129403 $14.99 Reviewed from digital galleys R Gr. 8-12 Against the grim backdrop of World War II and the Holocaust, Shusterman offers a graphic novel with five tales of magic and hope, drawing inspiration from Jewish history, folklore, and culture. Sisters in hiding find escape through a magical window, but the eldest is left behind; a golem exacts revenge on the guards of Auschwitz; Baba Yaga helps Jewish resistance fighters hiding in the German woods; the staff of Moses—disguised as a curtain rod—parts the seas to help Jews fleeing Denmark; and, perhaps in the most heartbreaking tale, a gift from a grandmother gives a young girl a glimpse of the family that could have been were it not for the Holocaust. The stories' fantastical elements bring hope to tragic events that surely had little, and they work along with the specificity of the Jewish experience to allow readers to fully contemplate the humanity of the victims without being overwhelmed by the horror of it all. Martínez's art has a retro feel, calling up early comics with plentiful dialogue and onomatopoeia, and though the human figures often feel stiff, the scenes centering on the fantastic are effortlessly dynamic. Between each tale is a brief, informative spread that further explains real-world events and cultural elements that inspired the story. This is an obvious choice for history units but might also spur discussion on how processing tragedy through fiction can lead to greater understanding and empathy.
