Roaring Brook, 2023 [32p] Trade ed. ISBN 9781250797032 $19.99 Reviewed from digital galleys R Gr. 1-4 In this visually gorgeous, poetic homage to Prince, readers are introduced to a brilliant musician who often drew on his painful early childhood as inspiration for his work. Before Prince was a magnetic star, he was a quiet boy who rarely had the security of a loving family, a stable home, or access to enough food. Music was a refuge, and it became a path out of his (mostly unhappy) childhood. The book's vibe, much like its artist subject, is cool and effortless as short, often rhyming, snippets of text pair with lavender-hued artwork to capture the essence of Prince as a lonely, scared kid while also hinting at the transformation to come. Alcántara's lush, watercolor pieces are at their best when they are full-page illustrations that communicate with the audience without words. Unfortunately, a lack of source notes makes it difficult to sort opinion from fact, and this is particularly troubling in the dense author's note where, for example, assumptions seem to be made about the cause of Prince's unsuccessful personal relationships. Taken primarily as an evocative mood piece, however, this is a noteworthy, introductory look at a truly astonishing musician, and young audiences are in for some fantastic (and non-explicit) listening via the well-curated family playlist that captures different eras of his career. ISBN 9781771648981 $19.95 Reviewed from digital galleys R* Gr. 7-11 In this nonfiction book, Warner's argument that music plays a significant part in all forms of activism is presented convincingly and colorfully alongside the digital illustrations of Louise Reimer. Chapters focus on eight overlapping areas of activism, from climate and racial justice to disability and queer rights to the anti-war and anti-colonialism movements and so much more in between. The spotlight moves seamlessly from faces recognized by the mainstream, like climate activist Greta Thunberg and pop singer Billie Eilish, to key figures that deserve more recognition, like environmental activist Xiuhtezcatl Martinez and singer/rapper Mumu Fresh, both of whom champion how inseparable climate action and Indigenous rights are. The origins of Greenpeace and the brutal history of North American residential schools are paired with detailed accounts of anti-police violence award show performances and punk rock lyrical analysis, suggesting a diverse breadth of challenges and a sonic optimism about meeting them. Ultimately, a thoughtful and detailed showcase of revolutionary movements, admirable individuals, and rich music—past and present—makes for a playlist-cum-book of activism as undoubtedly educational as it is exciting to hear. ISBN 9781635830927 $9.99 Reviewed from digital galleys Ad Gr. 8-12 It's hard growing up in a town dedicated to dark tourism (think \"Morbid Stars Hollow\"), especially if you already know what happens after death: nothing. Thanks to a near fatal allergic reaction to shellfish, sixteen-year-old Olive already knows there's no light at the end of the tunnel. Since her death and resuscitation, she has shrouded herself in a layer of apathy, so she won't have to lose anything when her time finally comes. However, when her elderly friend dies in front of her, the word \"mom\" on the woman's lips, Olive begins to question what she has believed about the Nothing waiting after death. Along with her former best friend Davis, his new-in-town girlfriend, and Olive's nemesis and town royalty Maren, she sets out to summon a ghost. That spirit turns out to be more than Olive bargained for, and the gang will have to grapple with their town's painful history to stop the sudden spree of violent attacks and lay their new haunting friend to rest. Funny with a touch of melodrama, this debut novel begins as an adventurous romp with Olive and her Scooby gang of friends but loses some joy as it struggles to bear some of its weightier themes. An underdeveloped world relies mostly on Olive and co. making many plot-convenient assumptions, and the heavily telegraphed ending is not particularly surprising. However, Olive's relatable fears about death carry most of the story, and it is sweetly satisfying to see her resolve her conflicts with Davis and grow into her feelings for Maren. The campy, gothic tone also provides a lot to love in this spooky read for the Wednesday fans. Candlewick, 2023 [40p] Trade ed. ISBN 9781536205992 $18.99 Reviewed from digital galleys R 4-7 yrs The icy, snowy environs of Earth's two poles are host to a bounty of intriguing animals, especially to young nature lovers, and here Elliott offers up a variety of poems that highlight the diversity of those creatures, both in their biological features and the ways in which they are perceived by humans. There is, of course, the regal Emperor penguin in the Antarctic section of the book, here playfully lauded [End Page 99] for its parental dedication and ability to traverse the wintry landscape (\"Praise for the Ruler / of Long-Distance Ambulation!). In the Arctic/Antarctic section for creatures that inhabit both poles, readers can find a wary salute to the orca (You are a master of predation / from / the kingdom of the dead), and a delighted tribute to the \"moss piglet\" or tardigrade. Walruses, musk ox, and caribou make an appearance for the Arctic portion, as well as the animal with the most outstanding headgear, the narwhal: \"A singular creature / with a singular feature.\" Each poem is accompanied by a full-page spread foregrounding the animal, and the multi-media art infuses scenes with energy and movement. Mottled textures, swift, brush-like strokes, and varied perspectives effectively crowd the page to convey the chaotic energy of swimming Antarctic krill, while curved, bold linework and tones of deep browns and gray capture the languid bodies of lounging walruses. This would make an excellent pairing with Bulion's Galápagos: Islands of Change (BCCB 02/23) for a poetic exploration of ecosystems or with Jenkins' Down, Down, Down: A Journey to the Bottom of the Sea (BCCB 08/09) for a marine-focused science lesson. Levine Querido, 2023 [176p] Trade ed. ISBN 9781646142644 $18.99 Reviewed from digital galleys R Gr. 5-7 Shaindy has always felt invisible—at school, at summer camp, and in her small, Orthodox Jewish neighborhood—so it's both puzzling and exhilarating when Gayil Itzhaki, the most popular girl in her class, invites Shaindy to join her on a secret mission. Gayil has found a keycard to their school building, and has a plan to play some harmless pranks, \"a fun distraction\" supposedly to ease their classmates' stresses of sixth grade. Every moment of Gayil's attention feels like a precious gift, but as the pranks go on they only get more upsetting. Even Shaindy can't deny that Gayil seems gleeful about the hurt she's causing, but in her moments alone with Gayil, Shaindy feels like she sees a side to the perfect Bais Yaakov girl that she doesn't show anyone else. Set over the Jewish holidays of Rosh Hashanah, the new year, and Yom Kippur, the day of atonement, this thoughtful middle grade novel explores the complexity of middle school friendships, bullying, and what it means to make amends and have a fresh start. What are initially posed as petty grievances are seriously examined as true hurts once Shaindy figures out that Gayil was targeting her all along, and she then must contend with her own feelings of anger and betrayal, making for a story that resists easy answers. The adults in the novel are refreshingly sensible about the whole affair; Shaindy's parents believe her story, and her teacher and school principal discern that the situation is more complicated than they initially saw. Most religious and cultural practices are explained in context, but non-Jewish and less observant readers may be interested in looking up some terms and concepts for more detail. Unfortunately, she's not entirely successful. Instead of being with Jelly, Peanut Butter has found new love: \"Anchovies have joined the picture / to make a most disgusting mixture.\" Fork leaves Knife for a whisk, Salt and Pepper call it quits, and Needle ditches Thread for a haystack. When Cupig eventually realizes she's left misery in her wake rather than swoony devotion, she goes to set things right. After a tireless day reuniting the couples, Cupig stows the arrows until next year and comes to the conclusion that \"sometimes she should just take a day off.\" Viewers will find it easy to forgive Cupig her missteps in light of her begging-to-be-squeezed chubby cheeks, heart-adorned tighty whities, and proportionally tiny wings. Collaged-like textures lend visual interest to the digital art, with crumpled paper used for clouds, while looping, red dashed lines track the errant arrows progress across each spread. Pun-filled speech bubble commentary accompanies the rhyming verse that flows cheekily from page to page, gently making fun of these pairings and inviting viewers to consider other familiar duos like Peanut Butter and Jelly. ISBN 9780593705599 $8.99 Reviewed from digital galleys Ad Gr. 8-12 Sure, Corey may have wished her deceitful, boyfriend-stealing ex-best friend dead, and sure, she mostly meant it, but she didn't actually think Bree would be found drowned shortly thereafter. That's what you get, apparently, when you quietly hope for your friend's demise after making out with Hades at Thesmophoria, a festival on the Island, where humans are at the whim of Greek gods. A series of missteps, including angering several gods and ticking off the oracle, lands Corey in the Underworld, not dead but still claimed by the Furies, who hold an unexplained affection for her. Corey initially welcomes their care in such a desolate place, until she displays a power that earns their wrath and sends her to Hades begging to go home. Corey is a likable, complex character, believably torn between mourning [End Page 112] Bree and still stinging from her betrayal, and her resignation at having to stay in the Underworld—which feels emotionally safer than the Island at the moment—is surprisingly understandable. No one else, however, is given such depth, and Hades in particular is one note as the grumpy, mysterious love interest; the heat of the initial kiss the two share in the early pages mostly sizzles out. Still, the world is clearly constructed through Corey's straightforward narration, and descriptions of the Underworld and the Furies' judgements upon mortals bring a visceral energy to the plot. An easy sell to fans of Greek mythology, this will also appeal to readers who like their romances on the dark side. Candlewick, 2023 [40p] Trade ed. ISBN 9781536218596 $18.99 Reviewed from digital galleys R Gr. 2-4 Humans, Bauer contends, are avid storytellers, narrating a mysterious, chaotic world into order, even if the specific narratives we conjure prove to be mistaken and eventually replaced. The world was thought to be flat for centuries, until curious minds sought and built another story; a round world, then, but surely at the center of the universe? A lovely vision, perhaps, but more questions revealed our sun to be the center, not of the universe, but only our solar system—which is only part of the Milky Way, one of infinite galaxies. Of course, that may still be proven not quite right, and the only real truth of the universe is that it invites endless speculation. A provocative exploration of human existence is skillfully captured in Bauer's quiet [End Page 90] but firm text, compelling readers forward and sparking appropriate curiosity while recognizing the flaws in any sense of certainty. An afterword gives more historical details about specific questioners from a variety of cultures (the Greek philosopher Aristotle; the Hindu Vedic sage Yajnavalkya) and the theories they posited, but more important is the overarching theme of how story and science inform each other, even when their relationship disrupts the presiding interpretation of reality. Ethereal illustrations are a unique blend of hand cut paper dioramas backlit and photographed; they feel pensive but dynamic, with silhouettes of humans and animals dwarfed by a sky swirling with celestial features in soft hues. There are a variety of uses here in a cross-subject curriculum, from storytelling practices in language arts to science history and theory. The Majestics live on the isle until they come of age and are presented to the nation's most wealthy and powerful in the Offering, forever tying their powers and their very lives to the highest bidder. Rosa is desperate to avoid such a fate, but when she and her best friend Juana are caught trying to escape the isle, Juana is imprisoned and used as leverage to force Rosa into submission. Rosa has other plans, stealing a gem from a dashing young pirate and using it as leverage for his aid in finding Juana and helping them escape. The gem is Mariano's inheritance from his piratical parents, but Mariano finds himself drawn more to the beautiful and dangerous Majestic than to his own destiny. Time is not on their side, though, as the [End Page 109] Offering ceremonies continue; the sharks are circling the Majestics, and Rosa and her shadows are the most coveted prize of all. ISBN 9780316333320 $9.99 Reviewed from digital galleys R* Gr. 4-6 It's really no wonder fifth-grader Benny is having trouble sleeping: his mom recently took off and has little interest in seeing Benny or his siblings, his dad is quite literally chain smoking himself to death, his brother is an obnoxious bully, yet no one seems to think any of these things warrant Benny's recent anger issues. So now he's being forced into therapy, where he mostly stays silent, unable to discuss or even access his feelings, though he does get some support from a teacher and understanding friends. When his father is diagnosed with cancer and given just a few months to live, Benny's mom comes back into their lives, but how are they supposed to reform a family when it's so terribly broken? Based on the author's own childhood, this is a tender, vulnerable portrayal of one kid's attempt to shore up his strengths to piece together the shards of a deeply shattered heart, with little help and sometimes actual hinderance from those who are supposed to care for him. The conversational tone and cartoony illustrations belie Benny's list of troubles, but it becomes clear as his narration continues that his straightforward telling is very much a coping mechanism to keep a certain amount of distance from what must be a chaotic mess [End Page 107] of feelings. His voice rings absolutely true, especially when he realizes that other people are in fact struggling with these lousy circumstances and that his siblings and parents are coping in different, and often toxic, ways. Readers not yet ready to tackle Krosoczka's Hey, Kiddo (BCCB 11/18) will appreciate Long's honest exploration of a troubled family that is bound both by love and tragedy.
