ISBN 9780374389703 $9.99 Reviewed from digital galleys Ad Gr. 5-8 Max Plink, seventh grade Op-Ed writer for the student newspaper and connoisseur of snarky t-shirts, doesn't just need braces; with a maxillofacial deformity (a severe overbite), she has to wear a mouth brace at home in the hopes of avoiding jaw surgery someday, and her bullies never miss an opportunity to make fun of her. The situation is awful, compounded by her parents' financial struggles, her mother's anger, and her father's poorly hidden drinking, and now Max's younger sister Alexis has joined the bullies in their cruel taunts. Trying to juggle the weight of all these stressors, she adds one more: entering the city-wide journalism contest for kids, focusing her video report on braces and bullying. Wyman has made an engaging novel with a realistic rendering of both the well of love but also the bitterness that can fester in families as they go through rough patches. For all the interesting relationships, there is an uneven handling of characters. All the adults, for example vacillate between believably human failings and sudden eloquent speeches on very important topics. As a journalist investigating bullying and jaw surgery, it is also significant that neither Max nor any of the adults in her world suggest that there's nothing wrong with her face as it is, nor explore how biases against facial differences are just as problematic as the bullying. While these shortcomings are notable, this is still an emotionally gripping story about a girl from a struggling working-class family with a story to tell. The older sister immediately sees the connection between the five and begins to write a play for them, but the younger sister wreaks havoc, leaving the boy puppet outside on the ground after she is unable to make his bow and arrow work and pulling out some of the teeth of the wolf (a particular shame given that they were the primary source of the wolf's pride). One by one, the puppets are separated, wondering if what befalls them is their fate and if they will ever see each other again. Thankfully, a happier end awaits each of them, and their reunion is a joyful one made all the more meaningful by their time apart. The first of an anticipated trilogy of novellas, this is a quiet story of belonging, family, and destiny. The illustrations do remarkable work in reflecting the blank eyes and fixed features of the puppets while also evoking a strong emotional response to them through subtle choices in their posture, shading, and relative size on the page. While there is a Victorian air to the clothing and language, no specific time period is indicated, an effective authorial choice as the stories of protagonists (puppet or human) on a quest to understand their places in the world are certainly not rooted to a particular era. ISBN 9780316424134 $18.99 Reviewed from digital galleys R 4-7 yrs In this picture book adaptation of the Arthurian romance, Prince Morien grows up on adventure with his mother in northern Africa, but he yearns to know his father, a knight of the round table. Morien's trusty steed takes him \"over land and sea\" to England, but, annoyingly, every knight he encounters would rather challenge him to a duel than answer questions about his father. Eventually, a duel with Sir Lancelot and Sir Gawain leads the three to recognize their group as a good trio, and together they go to find Morien's father, and maybe save King Arthur along the way. Once the king has been rescued properly, Morien is knighted, and he and his trio live out a lifetime of adventures. Glenn's crisp-lined vector art pair with speech-bubble quips to evoke Pixar-like style, lending an appealing quirkiness to Morien and company's questing. The overall focus on friendship gives plenty of contemporary relatability to an aged tale, and adventurous readers may be able to forgive Morien for seemingly forgetting his mother in lieu of a life of knighthood. Give this to the viewer who loves fantasy media, who is ready to be introduced to the Matter of Britain at an early age, or who could benefit from the reminder that the legends of King Arthur included a Black knight of the round table. After witnessing gruesome murders at a party, Athan stumbles home only to find his grandmother is missing. Enter Dominik, a handsome boy with a request: he wants Athan to help investigate the murders, which are actually part of a whole web of deaths associated with the art world elite. To do so, Athan must use his powers of scrying to peer into reflective surfaces (e.g., the side of a cooking pot) and watch the past unfold. When Athan begins to piece together how Dom is involved in the mysteries, he is both horrified and sympathetic, but they need each other now against formidable human and monstrous foes. There are tidbits of Greek immigrant culture, disturbing glimpses into what the mega rich may get into to keep themselves amused, and given the murder-dense circumstances, a surprisingly tender connection between Athan and Dominik. However, the heart of this novel is Athan's ferocious determination to save his grandmother, even at the cost of his own safety or mental well-being. New York, mostly at night, is a suitably gritty and expansive setting for this dark urban fantasy; it is not difficult to imagine that an ancient monster may lurk within the endless reflective surfaces of the city. Horror fans and folklore or fantasy buffs that don't mind a sturdy amount of gore will likely be captivated from the first scene. ISBN 9780062982414 $10.99 Reviewed from digital galleys R Gr. 9-12 A talented pianist at just sixteen, Léon Delafosse has the skills to raise his family out of near poverty; he just needs to secure a patron in the society elite in 1890s France. A successful performance at a high society salon doesn't bring funding, but it does lead to both romance and connections through Marcel Proust, a handsome, eccentric, and utterly charming boy who easily sweeps Léon into the Parisian art and music scene with little more than a wink and a smile. Soon, Léon finds patronage with Count Robert de Montesquiou-Fézensac, but Robert has a complicated, often hostile relationship with Marcel, putting Léon in a rather awkward position, especially as Léon pursues both romantically. In the end, it doesn't really matter, as both Marcel and Robert betray Léon in separate ways, and a dejected Léon returns to his small hometown to carve out something of a life, hopefully with his childhood friend and love, Félix. Third person-narration grounds Léon's coming-of-age story in Parisian history and culture, situating his struggles with his sexuality within his discovery of a world beyond the limitations of his class, and he ponders how his own passions and desires, romantic, sexual, and otherwise, fit into that larger experience. It's interesting, then, that Schrefer chooses to have Léon return home to live his most authentic life; Parisian society can be just as homophobic and insular as a small town, so why not live with who you truly love. Francophiles will delight in the many cameos here, including actress Sarah Bernhardt and writer Lucien Daudet, and an author's note provides more context regarding the book's inspiration, the real Léon Delafosse, a French pianist and composer. But Max's disappearance gives Skunk an idea; with the help of a squirrel, cat, and raccoon, Skunk disguises himself as Max. Unfortunately, a streak of black paint, socks for ears, and a decent roll-over routine can't stop Skunk from, well, skunking when he meets Max's family. He realizes that Max probably makes a better fit for humans anyway and sets out to find the missing dog with his new buddies. The sweet story of found families is thankfully given a little bite with the squirrel, cat, and racoon trio, who are all clearly living their best humanless lives. The cat's perpetual side-eye and general disregard of people will be familiar to feline owners, while the overeager, bouncing squirrel and the food-focused racoon feel true to life as well. Digital illustrations cleverly balance full, saturated spreads with more focused vignettes, giving readers a sense of the comings and goings of the neighborhood while highlighting Skunk and pals' shenanigans. The dachshund wears a robe instead of a collar, walks on two feet instead of four, bathes in a tub, and prefers a toilet over a tree at the park. Still, yearning to find another pup \"who loves fancy hats, clever crosswords . . . or the aroma of coffee,\" the dachshund dons a collar and heads out, only to be horrified by the barbarism of dogs playing roughly and urinating where they please. Dejected, our doggy protagonist returns home, followed by a poodle who is intrigued by their behavior at the park. Contrary to the dachshund's wishes, the poodle is boisterous and swallows their coffee by the mouthful—but the two have fun anyway, and the dachshund is able to acknowledge that friends with differences aren't so bad as long as they accept your own quirks. The refined narration [End Page 110] of the dachshund, translated from Swedish, is accented by the grayscale pencil art on cream-colored pages, with slight pops of color for the dachshund's brown body and the subdued red of dog collars. Pages effectively utilize negative space to depict the dachshund's loneliness, alternating between text with one smaller illustration and detailed sprawls of flowery wallpaper, tiled floors, and the elaborate rugs which decorate the dachshund's home. The unique art, distinctive canine protagonist, and touching theme about not needing to change to be worthy of friendship will make this picture book a memorable hit at storytime. ISBN 9781536222548 $18.99 Reviewed from digital galleys R 4-7 yrs The sighting of a sparrow prompts a young Black girl to ask her mother why they cannot fly along with the bird. In response, her mother recalls memories of Granny Liza, who flew every night through her connection with their ancestors: \"She could fly across the river / her spirit in her hands / Searching, always searching / for the promised land.\" As their rhythmic dialogue continues, the young girl begins to tremble, feeling a lightness in her feet and \"a longing to be free,\" and soon she takes her mother's hand and leaps into air, joining Granny Liza's and their ancestors' journey across the sea to the promised land. Inspired by Virginia Hamilton's The People Could Fly (BCCB 7/85), folk musician Giddens offers up an evocative, reverent celebration of family and cultural connection through storytelling, and the gentle dialogue between mother and daughter lend well to musical storytime or a readers' theatre performance. The gorgeous digital illustrations are dominated by dusky hues of soft violets and rose golds, with the mother and child subtly backlit by a halo-like effect. Sweeping spreads that show the girl's ancestors taking flight convey a sense of majesty, while close-ups on the girl's excited face and the mother and daughter's joining hands are intimate and inviting. Mestra Aronne taught Cinzia that cities are built on trust and the people of the city trust avvisi printers to tell the truth, even when it might be dangerous. That noble principle is tested when Cinzia and Aronne are detained after printing accusations against the magistrate, and Cinzia flees into the private garden of the magistrate's famously odd niece, Elena. Elena helps Cinzia hide from the guards, and the two girls decide to sneak away from the palazzo to investigate and find proof of Mestra Aronne's claims against Elena's uncle. Despite naysayers (\"I'm not foolish enough to think that three girls can change the world\"), bravery and perseverance characterize the girls as they endeavor to uncover corruption and make new friends along the way. This graphic novel depicts a gorgeously detailed, lushly colored European city, based on the medieval era Italian city-states according to the author's note. On their adventures, Cinzia and Elena learn more about their city and the people who live in it, from the powerful to the powerless, and discover the truth that a place is more than its idyllic surface may suggest. Disney Hyperion, 2023 [256p] Trade ed. As other people, Tia does the dirty work of breakups, coming-outs, and deterring bullies, but she has to leave her real body prone and uninhabited to do so. Her side hustle, however, is utterly derailed when her real body walks away while she is inside of a client and murders a district attorney. Tia's in hot water, not just because everyone saw her get arrested on TV, but because head-hoppers or \"immersionists\" are supposed to be registered with the government, and she isn't. Now, she must team up with a charming ex, the son of a Russian mafia heavy, and her kooky astrology-obsessed BFF to find out who had motive to kill the district attorney—and how. An engrossing, twisty mystery paired with the wise-cracking narration of a teenage girl makes this novel an easy recommendation for Veronica Mars enthusiasts who crave something that lives up to the tone and humor of the show. Tia is a snarky delight of a teen sleuth, realistically using the resources available to her and her head-hopping ability to trade favors and information. Landers plants plenty of clues and red herrings for readers to make guesses that feel genuinely satisfying when Tia finally faces down the culprit. Enough threads are left open for a sequel to answer questions about an immersionist group with a secret and hopefully give readers more of Tia fumbling herself out of tough situations with just her supernatural ability and a snappy quip.
